  1. Asiatic oak weevil (Cyrtepistomus castaneus) from a nearby park. No males have ever been found, even in its native range. Parthenogenesis is apparently common among broad-nosed weevils (Entiminae). #ploidy #parthenogenesis #weevils #beetles #insects #nature #oaks #coleoptera #curculionidae

  5. If you have an opportunity to visit a freshly-burned forest, look for pyrophilic beetles (e.g., certain species in Sericoda, Melanophila, Monochamus) and flies (Microsania). Some have specialized antennae for detecting smoke, others use infrared-sensing areas on abdomen or thorax to locate hot spots. #fire #smoke #weather #canada #beetles #coleoptera #insects #flies #trees #forests

  9. #WeevilWednesday: some people have been confused about how female hollyhock weevils (_Rhopalapion longirostre_) use their long snouts, so here you go. Her mouthparts are at the end of the snout. She chews a tunnel down into the heart of the flowerbud. Then she turns around, extends her ovipositor (at the end of her abdomen), and lays eggs down the hole. The larvae have a safe place to grow, with plenty of food!

  13. Ooo! Ooo! A bunch of new beetle species and at least one new family, Bostrichidae.

Also, a big new Elaterid (click beetles) unlocked! I've never seen this one before. If you've never seen a "click beetle", this is how they get their name.

  18. My intuition about the dearth of insects at my bug light being due to the cold seems to be borne out tonight as the temperature went up significantly today. Four families of beetles already!

This is an unknown Elaterid, the "click beetle" family. There is also a little scarab out there and another fast predatory beetle that I haven't photographed yet.

  23. Question for entomologists:
iNaturalist seems to think this is a wrinkled iron clad beetle Nosoderma plicatum (Phoeodes plicatus), [edit: after getting more pics tonight, it looks to me more like Phellopsis porcata, which is also in the Zopheridae family] which it seems to be, based on other photos have looked at online.

But, at least on iNaturalist, it would be a 60 mile northward range extension. Which is cool! But I'd like to have someone else look at it and confirm the ID.

I was struggling to get my stupid phone camera to zoom in and get a sharp photo of it, so these are the best that I have. Once I realized that it was not something common in this area, I went back out to the bug light to look for it, but could not find it.

The one way that this specimen seems to differ from the ones on Bug Guide is that it has slightly bulbous ends on its antennae, seemingly more so than the ones in the photos.

  32. Beetles from the other day:

    - Red milkweed beetle (_Tetraopes tetrophthalmus_)—the scientific name translates as "four-eyes four-eyes", note how the antenna divides the eye in two; on its host plant, common milkweed (_Asclepias syriaca_)
    - _Valgus hemipterus_ on Queen Anne's Lace (_Daucus carota_)
    - Grapevine beetle (_Pelidnota punctata_) on Virginia creeper (_Parthenocissus quinquefolia_)
    - Hairy flower scarab (_Trichiotinus_ sp.) on some kind of spiraea

All scarabs (family Scarabaeidae) except for the milkweed beetle who is a longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae).
