  1. Who Profits from Fear? Unpacking the Ebola Coverage

The Ebola outbreak has dominated headlines across every major news network. Reports flood our screens with alarming statistics, grave warnings, and images designed to evoke fear. If you have followed my work for some time, you already understand what drives this relentless coverage.

However, if you are new to these ideas and have stumbled upon this article, allow me to explain the underlying mechanism in straightforward terms.

The core issue comes down to a simple question: who benefits when people are afraid?

When a health crisis captures public attention, vast sums of money flow toward organizations and individuals positioned to respond. Pharmaceutical companies secure government contracts. International health agencies receive increased funding. Private donors open their wallets. The more alarming the crisis appears, the greater the financial response. This creates a troubling incentive structure where those with resources can influence how threats are perceived and, consequently, how money flows in response.

Wealthy donors, such as Bill Gates, provide significant funding to global health organizations like the World Health Organization. This financial support raises important questions about the relationship between money and influence. Global health organizations have priorities beyond public health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the rapid development and distribution of vaccines, created profits not only through direct sales but also through treatments for side effects. Keeping people alarmed benefits those who profit from the solutions they offer.

This pattern goes beyond individual crises or global health organizations. The way wealth and power are structured creates a self-reinforcing cycle. Tax policies allow charitable donations to lower tax bills, letting donors influence institutional priorities. Those with wealth can use their power to push for policies that benefit them, a practice known as lobbying. The money saved from taxes goes back into gaining political and personal influence, leading to more financial gain. This is circular reasoning: wealth buys influence, influence protects wealth, and the cycle goes on.

Breaking this pattern needs shared awareness and support. Knowing how these systems work is the first step to changing them. Sharing information that reveals these connections helps others see patterns they might overlook. Supporting independent voices that challenge established views allows for scrutiny that powerful institutions often resist.

This brings me to a personal appeal. If you want to break this horrendous circle, you must support people like me.

I’ve been writing here for almost six years, exploring topics most avoid. It’s come at a cost — I’ve become invisible on Google. Facebook and LinkedIn also banned me. Since August 2020, I’ve hardly had any online presence and can’t find a job. This work has cost me my professional life.

A lot of you read what I write. Very few support it.

I’m not judging, I just can’t keep going the way things are. So I’m asking directly: if anything I’ve written has ever meant something to you, please consider giving something back.

  6. Hi, these are the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots.

A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.

The West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant's 7 day running average is low. The last 7DRA calculation was on 5/19.

WSPT is one of three King County(-ish) sewersheds in this dataset. You can find overviews, individual sewershed results, and a breakdown of variants for the state wastewater surveillance program, along with other metrics like case counts and hospitalizations for Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, at doh.wa.gov/data-and-statistica. If you go to the page and click "learn more" in the statewide view tab, you can find out lots of details about how these data are calculated and how to interpret them. The dashboard gets updated every Wednesday (generally). The Department of Health is here on the fediweb, at @WADeptHealth

  12. Bumping -> Urgent covid vaccine comments needed

Public comments to the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) are due by Midnight ET, tonight (May 27).

Your voice is needed to advocate for continued updates to COVID vaccines in the US. Copy, modify, and share any of the text for your own advocacy. Your comment does not have to be long or contain scientific details. Brief personal comments are highly impactful. Personalize your comment by including brief comments about why updated COVID vaccination matters to you or how COVID vaccine access impacts your community.

    Key Talking Points:
-COVID vaccines must continue to be updated at least once a year to match circulating strains.
-We need updated COVID vaccines for fall, ideally by July-August prior to the start of the K-12 school year.
-COVID vaccines must be made available for people of all ages, 6 months and up, regardless of medical history.
-The FDA and other federal agencies must allow publication of recently blocked studies on COVID and other vaccine safety and effectiveness.

Submit your written comment by May 27 here: regulations.gov/commenton/FDA-

    View posted comments: regulations.gov/document/FDA-2

    View the docket: regulations.gov/document/FDA-2

The meeting will be held by online teleconferencing and livestreamed to YouTube on May 28, 2026, from 8:30am to 4:30pm Eastern time.

  13. RE: mastodon.social/@patientled/11

You may be aware of the hypothesis that reactivation of herpes-family virus (like EBV and HHV-6) may play a role in Long COVID.

This paper medrxiv.org/content/10.64898/2 found that one HHV-6 protein does correlate with LC burden:

Higher salivary HHV-6 DNA was associated with worse overall Long COVID symptom severity, anxiety, and depression

But no association between amount of viral DNA and LC burden:

Shedding of neither EBV nor HHV-6 DNA was singularly predictive of Long COVID status

Note that does NOT imply there isn't a causal relationship between active herpesvirus and LC, because other factors might mediate. It ONLY means that quantifying viral DNA in saliva is not predictive.

Great work by Dr. Iwasaki and the Putrino lab!
