One of the lists introduced me to “Nature’s Year: Changing Seasons in Central and Eastern Ontario” by Drew Monkman, which has a detailed chapter for each month of the year covering what is going on in the natural world this month that one might take note of and observe. It’s easier to see things when you know what you’re looking for!

I’ve already received a purchased print copy and I’m delighted. My kid wanted to look for caterpillar cocoons on a recent walk, and while I suspected we may not find any, I realized I was pretty uncertain when exactly in the year we should definitely be on the lookout. I’ve been collecting various field guides for years, starting in Nebraska and now in our new home of Ontario, and I think this book is going to really step up my game as an interested aspiring (casual/hobbyist) naturalist who grew up with fairly limited exposures to well, nature.
