Wyobraź sobie miniaturowego robota, który porusza się wewnątrz twojego ciała, dostarczając lek prosto do chorego organu. Problem w tym, że dotychczas takie maszyny potrzebowały nieporęcznych silników, przekładni lub zewnętrznych rurek pompujących powietrze.
Inżynierowie z Uniwersytetu Princeton postanowili odejść od tego podejścia. Stworzyli maszynę z elastycznego polimeru, która wygina się i przemieszcza bez żadnego tradycyjnego napędu.
Jak wprawić w ruch coś, co nie ma silnika?
Zamiast polegać na klasycznej mechanice, twórcy postawili na inżynierię materiałową połączoną z japońską sztuką składania papieru. Sercem nowej maszyny jest drukowany w 3D elastyczny polimer (ciekłokrystaliczny elastomer), wewnątrz którego zatopiono giętkie układy elektroniczne. Co ważne, wszystkie te elementy są drukowane w jednym, płynnym procesie.
Tajemnica ruchu tkwi w precyzyjnym sterowaniu temperaturą. Wbudowane w materiał obwody punktowo podgrzewają strukturę robota, zmuszając ją do kurczenia się i zginania wzdłuż zaprogramowanych wcześniej „zawiasów”. Maszyna porusza się więc dzięki zmianom temperatury, imitując zagięcia znane z techniki origami. Aby zapobiec szybkiemu zużyciu materiału, wbudowane czujniki na bieżąco analizują temperaturę i korygują ewentualne odkształcenia. Co istotne, dzięki temu konstrukcja zachowuje swoją formę i może wykonywać skomplikowane ruchy wielokrotnie, bez odczuwalnej degradacji materiału.
Co to w praktyce oznacza dla pacjentów?
Do tej pory „miękkie roboty” obiecywały rewolucję w medycynie, ale w rzeczywistości były uwiązane na smyczy przewodów sterujących. Rozwiązanie z Princeton to istotny krok w stronę budowy całkowicie niezależnych, autonomicznych urządzeń.
Brak sztywnych, metalowych części i bezszelestne działanie sprawiają, że tego typu konstrukcje mogą w przyszłości służyć jako inteligentne implanty medyczne. Pozwolą też na bezinwazyjną eksplorację niebezpiecznych lub ekstremalnie ciasnych środowisk, w których tradycyjny sprzęt ratunkowy po prostu by ugrzązł.
Co ciekawe, ten obiecujący projekt nie jest dziełem wieloletnich badań wielkiej korporacji, ale rozpoczął się jako praca dyplomowa jednego ze studentów, Davida Bershadsky’ego. Zespół badawczy nie tylko udowodnił, że koncepcja działa, ale od razu udostępnił w sieci oprogramowanie. Dzięki niemu inni projektanci mogą teraz samodzielnie tworzyć własne, elastyczne roboty oparte na tej technologii. I to jest podejście, które realnie popycha innowacje do przodu.
