  5. Is (Adelaide's) stormwater contributing to the toxic algal bloom?

"... Stormwater "had never been sexy" and, as long as it was flushed away, it did not get the attention nor the government investment it deserved."

"The EPA's Adelaide Coastal Waters Study (ACWS) summary of 2008 stated that nutrient loads had increased 30 to 50 times since European settlement, and recommended steps to reduce wastewater, stormwater and industrial inputs. The study found the loss of seagrass was "mainly due to stormwater flows" "

  10. Walking the streets of Glasgow on a rainy day requires basic longjump skills to cross the massive puddles caused by all the blocked drains. Kind of fun but not very accessible. ;-) #Glasgow #Drains

  15. I have stayed in this particular room a number of times and have often wondered how it came to be that this bathroom drain is skewed by a couple of degrees. A tiny reminder that not every has to be lined up or exact in order to work perfectly well.

  18. @jerry 's recent #kitchen #sink #project reminded me of something I've long wondered about.

    #Bathtubs have #overflow #drains.

#Bathroom #sinks mostly seem to have overflow drains.

I don't think I've ever seen a kitchen sink with an overflow drain, and I've overflowed a couple in my life as a result.

Anyone #know if there's a practical #reason kitchen sinks don't have 'em? Or is it just "always been done that way"?

  19. I wondered why there was so much #water in the street when driving home even when it wasn't pissing down (assuming #drains were blocked due to #weather ), now #AnglianWater has taken up half the road to investigate a burst main (at least there is still water at the taps in my house)

  20. Anybody know what you call these things? It catches rainfall overflow through a scupper from a patio surface and transfers to a downspout. Google image search is stumped. I'm trying to find a particular one but can't without knowing the *name*.

  21. My third day of GUADEC was spent listening to 2-3 talks throughout the day, while I was cleaning air ducts and trying (unsuccessfully, so far) to unclog my kitchen sink drain with an auger :blobsweats:

I couldn't find exactly what the blockage is even with the endoscope camera going 10 feet deep into the wall.
Here are some pictures of the hairy goo I was able to fish out from 10-15', before & after degreasing it. It smelled terrible.
    Somehow still doesn't drain.

  22. A cocktail of nasty pesticides in oysters and water in one of the NSW North Coast’s dominant rivers.

"New research led by Southern Cross University has found a cocktail of nasty pesticides in oysters and water from one of the NSW North Coast’s dominant rivers. Samples taken from the Richmond River estuary reveal 21 different pesticides, including a mix of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. The study is the most comprehensive investigation that has been undertaken into the pesticides entering waterways from agricultural and urban run-off in northern NSW"

"The concentrations of several pesticides exceeded safe environmental guidelines, including atrazine and diuron that are banned overseas. Benomyl was also detected despite being banned in Australia...At present there is little accountability for the downstream impacts from land-based run-off.”

  23. When I poured in that first gallon of hot water — *whoosh*! I poured in another gallon of hot water for good measure, then followed up with a regular flush just to be sure everything was back in action. I was surprised how well it worked, and just wanted to share in case it might help someone else!

  24. Pour in a healthy dose of liquid dish soap (we had Dawn), like a cup or two. Let that just sit for about five minutes. Then pour in lots of hot water — I used a gallon pitcher that I filled from the hot water spigot in our tub. You could heat water on the stove, but you just want it hot, not boiling. I think our water heater is set around 125°F, if that gives you an idea, and you probably want it below ~150°F.

  25. I searched and read a few articles for ideas. A lot of them involved baking soda and/or vinegar. One tip had you combining baking soda, epsom salts, and dish soap in muffin tins to make a sort of bath bomb. I decided to start with one of the simplest ideas, and it worked first try: Dishwashing liquid and hot water.

  26. Using a plunger didn’t seem to help. A professional-strength drain cleaner (lye-based) didn’t work. I tried using a drain snake, but the one we have is really made for sinks and showers, not toilets, so it wouldn’t go through the U-bend to reach wherever the problem was.
