  1. A quotation from Thoreau

Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations. Books, the oldest and the best, stand naturally and rightfully on the shelves of every cottage. They have no cause of their own to plead, but while they enlighten and sustain the reader his common sense will not refuse them. Their authors are a natural and irresistible aristocracy in every society, and, more than kings or emperors, exert an influence on mankind.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) American philosopher and writer
Walden; or, Life in the Woods, ch. 3 “Reading” (1854)

The heavily hyped launch occurs against a backdrop of dramatically and irreversibly waning Western influence and power in every sphere across the continent. As Africans steadily rid themselves of unwelcome foreign occupiers and oppressors, the US is forced to rely on strategies of manipulation to stem the tide, which have already failed spectacularly. 11. Five Science Fiction Books That Shaped My Writing

Every writer can point to a handful of books that permanently changed the way they think about storytelling. Sometimes it’s because of unforgettable characters or immersive world building. Other times it’s the ideas behind those stories that linger, especially when they continue to feel relevant decades later. This week, Ginger revisits the five science fiction novels that had the greatest impact on his own journey as a writer. 19. Where China Undermines Its Own Influence

    中国如何削弱自身影响力

By Cliff Potts, CSO, and Editor-in-Chief of WPS News

    Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines — August 3, 2026 — 17:35

China’s greatest challenge is not external opposition.

It is the gap between what it builds and how it behaves.

That gap is where influence is lost.

    Strength Without Alignment

China has demonstrated the ability to build long-term influence through infrastructure, trade, and industrial capacity. These are durable foundations. They create opportunity and interdependence across regions.

But influence is not built on capability alone. It depends on whether others feel secure engaging with that capability.

When actions introduce uncertainty, the value of long-term investment is reduced by short-term risk.

    This creates a contradiction.

Countries see benefit. They also see exposure.

    Mixed Signals

In many parts of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, China’s presence is defined by two competing realities.

On one hand, there is economic engagement—trade, investment, development.

On the other, there is sustained pressure in contested areas, particularly in maritime zones.

    These signals do not align.

One invites cooperation. The other creates caution.

Countries respond accordingly. They participate where it is beneficial, and they protect themselves where they feel vulnerable.

This is not rejection. It is adjustment.

    The Cost of Ambiguity

Ambiguity can be useful in strategy. It allows flexibility and avoids commitments that limit options.

But when ambiguity affects how actions are interpreted, it creates instability.

If neighboring countries cannot clearly determine where boundaries exist—legal, operational, or strategic—they assume the worst-case scenario.

    That assumption shapes behavior.

It leads to increased coordination among states, stronger external partnerships, and a steady shift toward balancing strategies.

Ambiguity intended to preserve freedom of action ends up narrowing it.

    Perception as Reality

China often frames its actions as defensive, administrative, or historically justified.

Those internal explanations are consistent within its own system.

    Externally, they are interpreted differently.

Perception is not controlled by intent. It is shaped by observation.

When actions appear coercive, they are treated as coercive, regardless of how they are described.

    That disconnect matters.

It creates a situation where China believes it is acting within reason, while others believe they are responding to pressure.

    The Regional Response

The response across the region has been consistent, even if it is not always coordinated.

Countries maintain economic ties with China while expanding security relationships elsewhere. They increase defense cooperation. They participate in multilateral frameworks that provide balance.

This is not escalation for its own sake.

It is a reaction to perceived risk.

The more persistent the pressure, the more persistent the response.

    The Taiwan Signal

Taiwan remains the most significant indicator of how this pattern could evolve.

If China chooses to resolve Taiwan through force, it will not be seen as an isolated action. It will be interpreted as confirmation of how China applies power when faced with limits.

That interpretation will extend far beyond Taiwan.

It will influence how every country in the region assesses its own position, its own vulnerabilities, and its own future relationship with China.

The impact will not be temporary.

    It will redefine alignment.

    What This Means Going Forward

China does not lack the tools to build influence. It has already demonstrated that capability.

The issue is whether those tools are being used in a way that reinforces or undermines the outcomes they are meant to achieve.

    Long-term investments require long-term confidence.

If actions create doubt about future behavior, that confidence erodes.

Influence becomes conditional instead of durable.

    The Bottom Line

China is building a system of influence.

At the same time, it is taking actions that cause others to build systems to manage or resist that influence.

Those two processes cannot continue indefinitely without conflict between them.

The question is not whether China can project power.

The question is whether it can align its behavior with the kind of influence it is trying to build.

  21. Calling works.

Most people believe politicians do not listen. BUT

'The thresholds that move these offices are correspondingly small:

    - 10 calls in an hour catches attention
    - 50 calls in a day pulls the senior team
    - 100 calls in a day clears every other item off the docket
    - 1,000 calls creates a record the office cannot ignore, and will surface in the next election cycle.

One real phone call outweighs hundreds of templated messages.'

If their AI's can access and read users emotions, they can use their outputs to influence emotions, as Meta's much cruder 2012 study showed.
