  1. Navigating the Void: Why Nigeria Needs a Corporate Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) Framework

In a standard DPA regime, a company that self-reports and cooperates can avoid the "corporate death penalty" of a criminal conviction. In Nigeria, we are currently forced to rely on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. While the ACJA provides for Plea Bargaining, it is a fundamentally different animal from a DPA:

  4. I've been wittering on about the history and failings of Meritocracy, but I hadn't drafted a version for Substack.

I've purposely left Trump, but clearly he's a central figure in this perspective. Very few situations merit meritocracy as a lens, but we seem to overextend it. It is certainly overrepresented in business.

  5. The Karma of the Beautiful Game: How Spain’s 2026 Victory Rewrote the Script for Trump and the Aggies

In many ways, Spain’s 2026 triumph stands as a glorious, inescapable metaphor for what happens when performative ego, systemic meddling, and brute gamesmanship run smack into the unyielding wall of competence and poise.

  6. #ConsumerWelfare, #RevealedPreferences, #regulatorycapture & #meritocracy are just some of the ways that #capitalism's alleged defenders cooked up to insist that they love the competitive discipline imposed by markets while being totally dependent on self-described #capitalists who have utterly escaped from that discipline and have committed to doing everything in their power to prevent themselves from ever coming under any form of constraint.

Today, these [ #billionaires ] clutch their pearls at the "demonization" of the ultra-rich, calling it "billionaire derangement syndrome." But the only "billionaire derangement syndrome" that matters is the syndrome that affects billionaires and convinces them that they are above any discipline or rules.”

  7. I don't usually link to articles in the FT because they are behind an (albeit permeable) paywall... however, this great piece in the FT Magazine today by Jinu Koola on the case for Norwegian mediocracy, as a preferable alternative to US 'meritocracy', is well worth a read.

[If you have 'reader view', or similar, on your browser, you'll be able to access it without the images (which you don't need)]

Enjoy & (likely) nod as you read.

  8. Ah, the joy of watching Harvard's admissions process reduced to a carnival game of Plinko! 🎢 Turns out, the Sorting Machine is a master class in exclusion, with SAT scores and sports trophies vying for dominance while merit awkwardly shuffles to the back of the line. 🏆📉 Who knew getting into college was the ultimate zero-sum game, right? 🤡

  9. For those who still believed the term „meritocracy" is not ideological: trumps Intervention with fifa shows what those ones advocating it really mean with it.

It was never about removing injustice and letting everyone have a fair chance.
It was always about maintaining inequality.

They will tell you you are not working hard enough whilest making sure that you never work hard enough...

    spare me that bs

  10. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 📝📊 The #SAT was first administered to 8,000 students in June 1926, born from #WorldWarI #military I.Q. tests designed by #Princeton psychologist and eugenicist Carl Brigham.

Now taken by two million #students annually, fewer than 10% of U.S. #colleges require it for fall 2026 admissions, a shift accelerated by the #Covid #pandemic and long standing debates about what the test actually measures. The article traces the test’s #evolution from a tool that helped break into the old boys’ network of elite colleges to an #exam whose scores strongly correlate with family #income.

  11. Fun fact:

🇷🇴 Romania’s president, Nicușor Dan, was one of the 11 students to solve the legendary Problem 6 at the 1988 IMO.

He scored a perfect 42/42 that year, alongside future Fields Medalist 🇻🇳 Ngô Bảo Châu. 🇨🇦 Ravi Vakil also solved it.

🇦🇺 Terence Tao, aged just 13, got 1/7 on that problem, aced almost everything else, and still won a gold medal. @tao

In fact, Dan won two consecutive perfect-score gold medals at IMO (1987 & 1988).

"Part of the pro- #capitalist psychosis is the naive assumption that the system is a perfect #meritocracy in which everyone always gets exactly what they deserve."

Another cheap strawman for the collection. I still hold out hope that some day someone who hates capitalism will do so on the basic of an honest criticism and actually understanding of what it is, not this sort of hyperbolic nonsense.

  14. When the polar ice caps melt, not only will it release tons of carbon, but viruses frozen in time get released back into the wild.

Then there's fish farms, cow farms, general #meat production, which keeps animals in unsanitary conditions and dumps insane amounts of antibiotics into organic systems.

Then there's the hate for #WHO, a mouth piece for the world's health professionals - an actual #meritocracy - being dragged in the dirt by #conspiracy theorists.

  15. From an April 9th Texas Tech University System memorandum providing course conent guidelines:

    >> To ensure academic objectivity, faculty are prohibited from teaching as absolute truth that:
    ...
    ● Meritocracy or a strong work ethic are inherently racist, sexist, or constructs of oppression. <<

A flagrant breach of academic freedom.
