  1. 1/👩‍🌾🧵

I think I've finally nailed a system down for tracking what variety of tomato I'm saving the seeds for. It relies on two things I've been given, as well as one additional change I made to how I grow things this year.

I was given a label printer, just one of the little heat labeller ones that prints out small labels like for spice jars or seed packets.

I've also started using little organza bags to protect my tomatoes from the slugs, snails, and rodent fuckers that have been nipping or biting holes into my favourite tomatoes.

So I print out labels for all of the tomato varieties that I want to save the seeds for, then I make sure I put the corresponding label in the organza bag when I harvest it.

(The other tomatoes I just take out of the little bags, but the ones I want to save the seeds for, I make sure it stays in it.)

The last change I made was to use the Riviera yogurt jars I was given by a friend who had been using them to store spices in, to ferment my seeds. Normally I just do the paper towel seed save, but this year I'm actually going to the additional effort of cleaning the seeds properly and storing them in little plastic bags, with the label I printed.

So the first step is to put the label on the jar, only half peeled so I don't have to fight to get it loosened up later.

I think this system actually works for me, and my ADHD. Hopefully this means I won't end up with anything called "Unknown Cherry Tomato" or "Fat Brown Tomato" this year.

  2. Nature is pretty crazy. Today I discovered a giant green caterpillar on my tomato plant. It was covered in what looked like ovoid white eggs. My research suggests this is a Tomato Hornworm already found by its predator, a wasp whose hatchlings will consume it.

I am leaving them alone to fight it out.

  3. The fallen seeds from the Thai Red Roselle I planted last year volunteered this summer and they are nice, verdant and bushy from all of the rain we’ve been getting. #Perennials are a must for me in the garden. You put in effort one year and, if all goes well, you reap what you sewed for years to come.

The other plant is Davis green cotton, also a hibiscus relative. It’s the very first flower on this plant. I can’t wait to see a green cotton boll. #gardening #Florida #Zone10

  4. We’re nearing the end of the season here and I’m looking for ways to preserve my harvest. I don’t have a setup for canning, but I did just order a dehydrator. Hit me up with your best [non-canning] preservation methods for tomatoes, peppers, and herbs! allforgardening.com/1940002/we #gardening #Vegetable #VegetableGardening

Do you see what I see?! 🤩 The bell pepper is blooming! ❤️
(No idea which variety. I put a few seeds in soil, when I eat a veggie from the supermarket :) Windowsill-kitchen-scraps-garden =D)
