  3. 📰 Losing Wild Pollinators Means Losing Vital Nutrients

🌏 Nepal: A year‑long study in Jumla shows that bees, hoverflies, and other wild pollinators quietly supply **over 20% of essential vitamins** to smallholder farming communities.

🐝 When insects decline, diets collapse. Pollinator‑dependent crops like beans, pumpkins, and apples form the backbone of local nutrition, especially for children already facing high rates of stunting.

🌼 But there is hope. Simple, low‑cost steps like planting native wildflowers, protecting bee habitat, and reducing pesticides can boost pollinator numbers, raise farm income, and restore nutrient security.

  5. So you rinse it, seal it in a bag with barely damp sphagnum, and set it at the back of the refrigerator for ninety to a hundred and twenty days. In spring you plant it an inch down in a deep pot. Five to seven years later, fruit no corporation ever priced.

    Bi socair — be still.

What are you growing that won't pay off for years?

  12. I'm enjoying trying local native plants in my garden. There's a bottlebrush (Callistemon), native flaxes (Dianella), tea tree (Leptospermum), grevilleas, honey myrtle (Melaleuca), violet (Viola), ground covers (Myoporum parvifolium, Scaevola). They're doing well over winter, I'm looking forward to the flowers in spring!

  14. Last photo from San Juan island. This is the other lighthouse, Lime Kiln Point, on the West coast facing #VancouverIsland . If you look carefully you can see an orca surfacing in the water off to the left. This is best place in the lower 48 states to see #orca whales but even here you don't see them just offshore like this every day. I got lucky.

  16. Some views of Cattle Point, San Juan Island National Historic Park. This is where the American military quartered their troops during the border dispute. No formal gardens here but look at those meadows full of thistles and pearly everlasting. Look at those gnarly contorted shore pines. Before white settlement the Samish Indians used this site to haul in vast quantities of salmon and they dried the meat in the sunny windy summer weather.

  18. A walk along the shore of San Juan island. A saltwater lagoon with a lot of driftwood and some blooming Puget Sound gumweed --Grindelia integrifolia, which is the coolest name, like a fairy tale character.
