"Join us to explore seasonal signs of late spring with trees and shrubs leafing out and flowering. All activity in plants and animals speeds up with increases in sunlight intensity. We will examine some of the important interactions that benefit plants and animals with seasonal spring changes, as well as hints for tree identification.

This program will be led by experienced Reserve docent, naturalist and nature writer Eileen Willard, who spent 15 years as a University of New Hampshire lab instructor in dendrology (study of trees) and in 2022 completed her Maine Master Naturalist certification. Ages 12 and up."

  6. Gorgeous blooms on a large & healthy Indian bean tree aka cigartree or Southern catalpa.

It prefers moist soil with full sun. It's easily raised from seeds which germinate early in the first season. It multiplies readily from cuttings. This tree is fairly free from fungal diseases & has few insect enemies. Which is why many landscapers love to add it.
The wood of these trees are brittle/hard, but doesn't rot easily; it's used for fence posts & railroad ties.

  8. How To Identify Black #AshTrees: A Beginner's Guide.

    May 29, 2023

    Difficulty - Advanced

    by Rob Smith Rob Smith

Ash trees are a popular choice for landscaping and are commonly found in parks, streets, and in backyards. But not all ash trees are the same. If you are trying to identify a black ash tree, you need to know what sets it apart from other species of ash trees.

  9. These trees are Black Poplars, possibly hybrids. Notice how they all have a large lower branch facing southwest. I’ve heard this might be a distinctive feature of native Black Poplars, not hybrids.

Can this single feature be enough to identify them as native?

  10. This is a #Japanese #snowberry #tree - full of flower buds. They'll blossom soon. The flowers are white & bell shaped.
This tree is being used more often for municipal & private property #landscaping . I'm seeing lots more of them around #Saanich #VictoriaBC & #VancouverIsland in general.

  11. I don't know what our front #flowering #tree is - can someone help me with this #TreeIdentification ? Multiple hummingbirds have nested for years in this tree - it's their fave tree to nest in. It's been on property for ages - I'm guessing it's at least 80-90 yrs old. Very healthy. Reminds me of crabapples but produces no fruits - only flowers.

  12. While at a new-to-us lake this morning, I was able to test out Seek to identify some trees that we’ve never seen before.

The bark on the American Persimmon tree is so fun. It’s like little dots were attached to the trunk one by one.

The bark on the Shagbark Hickory is also unique and truly lives up to its name.

  13. My first #ThickTrunkTuesday post! I don't think I framed the shot correctly for scale, and I'm terrible at estimating distances, but this is an absolute unit. It'd take two people with arms outstretched to get around the base. I'd be interested if anyone can ID the tree; I'd love to be better at #TreeIdentification!

  14. There are quite a few of these beauties near the bay shore where I live. I haven’t yet successfully identified what kind of pine. Anyone? I see them in pairs or small groups and can’t help bet wonder if they’re highly social #introverts…like me.

  15. Mastodon, help me identify a tree from my childhood memories.

In Haines City FL, my great grandmother had a large tree in her back yard that had dark purple/black berries, and waxy pointed spade leaves that smelled like menthol when you broke them.
