  8. Question for EU research folks - I sometimes find out about research in my area and positions for PhD students related to that grant only after the grant is already a year old and indexed on a search engine somewhere. (e. g. fruitdiv.eu/ )

Are there some websites in English that are easy to figure out where I could find these grants when I still have a chance of trying to network with supervisors applying for them?

  10. A selection of the family’s photographs and documents—which trace the lives of Japanese American flower farmers before, during, and after their World War II incarceration—is on view in “This Land Is …” through Jan. 11, 2027. #LosAngeles #Racism #Horticulture #USHistory

  11. "For generations, the Kuromi family has been part of the story of Los Angeles, from their flower farm in Los Feliz to the family businesses that followed. In this film, Aiko Kuromi shares memories of growing up on the farm and the remarkable path her family’s story took through the 20th century. Along the way, an archival photograph preserved at The Huntington connects the family’s past with its present in an unexpected way."

  13. That is also nothing new - public money via USDA & land grant universities has been going into the aims of corporations and big growers for a while. There is some work to help smaller growers & home gardeners, but it's less and happening at fewer places.

Because I love tree fruit, of course I find it sad those trees are being grubbed up. And those are just the processing peaches. The fresh eating peach growing acreage in CA had already reduced for market reasons.

  14. * "Weed management
is Australia's most expensive land management problem – for both the environment and agriculture."

"Recent research found that the cost of weed management made up more than three-quarters [81 per cent] of the total cost for recovering Australia's threatened species." >>

    * Gardeners, pastoralists and the horticultural industry love imported exotic flora. Some are illegal but plant retailers and hobbyists continue to sell these weeds.

Some have "a dense shrub layer which excludes native plants, mainly on and near the coast, but it also transforms the habitat and, through that, deprives native wildlife of important resources. It's leaving future generations an immense burden because a lot of plants still have a long way to spread." >>

  15. This is a very long shot (and has nothing to do with history & co :sadness: ), but does anyone know of a database/book/compehensive list, or someone who might know one, about crop responses to deficit irrigation?

    Also: accessible without academic affiliation.

  16. #CamdenME - #Workshop#NeedleFelted Mushrooms with Sam Coon

    Description:

"Whether used as a lovely sculpted display, an ornament, or even as a pincushion, needle felted mushrooms are a fun project to create for all levels: those starting out, and those already familiar with the process. Class instruction will include wool types used, needle safety precautions and proper use, how to create a form using core wool, and adding exterior details with #DyedWool. Examples will be provided, such as fly agarics, boletes, chanterelles, and russulas. Students will be able to complete 1-2 mushrooms by the end of the class session, depending on the size and details.

"Sam Coon is a self-taught #FiberArtist, and has been making felt since being introduced to both needle felting and wet felting in 2009.

"Much of her inspiration is gleaned from the natural environment, particularly patterns, colors, and shapes. From there, various types of items are created including vessels, wall art pieces, sculptures, jewelry, and wearable felted items that are nuno felted. In these art forms, she uses wool fibers that have not been spun or woven, such as Merino or Corriedale. In many instances, fabric, silk and viscose fibers are incorporated to change the textural quality of the felt and for added dimension.

"What particularly stands out the most to her, when working with wool to make felt, is that the sculptural qualities of wool are impressive, making creative possibilities seemingly endless. Along with working in the studio, she also regularly teaches needle and wet felting classes at varying locations and age groups.

"This workshop is generously co-sponsored by Camden Riverhouse Hotel.

"#Merryspring is your community nature center offering #WalkingTrails, cultivated #gardens, #wildlife, and #ecology and #horticulture educational programs all year round. The park is located at the end of Conway Road, just off of Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza."
