  1. Question for EU research folks - I sometimes find out about research in my area and positions for PhD students related to that grant only after the grant is already a year old and indexed on a search engine somewhere. (e. g. fruitdiv.eu/ )

Are there some websites in English that are easy to figure out where I could find these grants when I still have a chance of trying to network with supervisors applying for them?

  14. "For generations, the Kuromi family has been part of the story of Los Angeles, from their flower farm in Los Feliz to the family businesses that followed. In this film, Aiko Kuromi shares memories of growing up on the farm and the remarkable path her family’s story took through the 20th century. Along the way, an archival photograph preserved at The Huntington connects the family’s past with its present in an unexpected way."

  20. That is also nothing new - public money via USDA & land grant universities has been going into the aims of corporations and big growers for a while. There is some work to help smaller growers & home gardeners, but it's less and happening at fewer places.

Because I love tree fruit, of course I find it sad those trees are being grubbed up. And those are just the processing peaches. The fresh eating peach growing acreage in CA had already reduced for market reasons.

  21. "100s of acres of bulldozed trees, 70 cancelled contracts and an estimated $550M lost later, some former Del Monte peach growers are betting on almond trees as their next move...

The almond trees are a newer self-pollinating (USDA) variety called Yorizane, which require less labor and costs. While industry uncertainty still looms large, the growers hope these benefits, on top of a more stable almond market, will lead to returns."

  22. Seeing all the yellow lawns in the UK via vloggers right now, it gets across to me that now would be a perfect time to sheet mulch them or solarize them and do some soil building, but people would probably complained about how it looked (as if dead turf grass is much better...)

  23. How greed is turning Spain into a desert

It's good that DW points out early that this is not just a thing in Spain. It's happening in many places.

The profits go to rich growers, the costs offshored and borne by poorly paid immigrant workers, the environment, and the general public.

Eat the rich, not out-of-season produce.
