Ancient word of the day: Hedgehog
The ancient word for today is hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus. In the Middle Ages, writers didn’t make reference to hedgehogs, but to urchins. This term for the spiky diminuitive animal is still favoured in some English dialects. We still have the lingering remnants of this etymology in the form of sea urchin, which is literally a sea hedgehog.
The word urchin came to England with the Norman invasion and was derived from the Latin word ericius. Before the Norman conquest, the animal was known by the Anglo-Saxon name Igl.
Other names
Furze-pig – Devon
Hotchi-witchi – Romani
Hodmedods – Norfolk
Ouriço cacheiro – crafty pig
Detail of a miniature of hedgehogs sticking fallen fruit to their quills and carrying it back to their burrow; from the Rochester Bestiary, England (Rochester?), c. 1230, Royal MS 12 F. xiii, f. 45r.
or porco espinho’ – spiky pig in Portuguese”Thorns shall grow in their palaces, nettles & thistles in their strongholds … there shall the hedgehog build, dig, be there at home and bring forth his young ones.” Taverner’s Isiah 34, 1539.
Detail of a miniature of the hedgehog reproaching the goat for his vanity; from Ulrich von Pottenstein, Spiegel der Weisheit, Austria (Salzburg), c. 1430, Egerton MS 1121, f. 44v.The hedgehog was a symbol of Christian humility
The Speculum sapientiae, or Mirror of Wisdom is an ancient tale of beasts in Latin. In one tale, a passing goat sees its reflection in a pond and declares himself very handsome indeed. A hedgehog trundles along afterwards and reproaches the goat telling him that profound humility, not vain boasting are what makes animals truly noble.
Detail of a miniature of a hedgehog; from Jean de Wavrin, Recueil des croniques d’Engleterre, vol. 1, Netherlands (Bruges), 1471-1483, Royal MS 15 E. iv, f. 180r.Read more: The British Library Digitised Manusripts

An enormous monument was built to honor a dead king. It was once listed among the wonders of the world. But then an order of warrior monks destroyed the monument to build their castle. #travel #history https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/turkey/halicarnassus/?s=mc

Bronze Age bowl barrow on Upper Hollesley Common, Suffolk. These are the most numerous type of round barrow and up to 10,000 recorded nationally and no doubt many more lost. This area is rich in archaeological remains, with the famous Sutton Hoo nearby and several other bowl barrows. Not to mention the UFO’s in Rendlesham Forest. #history #bronzeage #archeology

#PhotoOfTheDay is what appears to be a homemade historical marker at the Gold Hill Hotel on the south side of Virginia City in Nevada. We stayed there while 4x4 trip back a bit after Y2K. For an old funky desert hotel they had a great restaurant.

TO WELL. To divide unfairly. To conceal part. A cant phrase used by thieves, where one of the party conceals some of the booty, instead of dividing it fairly amongst his confederates.

Autumn Grants Update for Eligible Industrial Heritage Museums & Sites
This autumn’s round of heritage grants include three available for industrial heritage museums (accredited or working towards accreditation) and other industrial sites.
Museum Learning and Engagement Grants
Museum Development is delivering the ‘Museum Learning and Engagement Grants’ on behalf of Arts Council England, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and the Department for Education. This is a one-off, rapid-response small grant programme designed to give an opportunity for museums to undertake innovative pilot project projects to improve access to cultural learning opportunities for children and young people, particularly in underserved communities and areas of low engagement. The programme has been designed to provide continuity and maintain momentum to Museums and Schools objectives, while future museum education investment is developed. Those eligible are:
- ACE National Portfolio Organisations, Accredited and Working Towards Accreditation museums
- Museum partners who are current recipients of The Museums and Schools Programme grant
The deadline is 29 September. Follow this link for more information: Museum Learning and Engagement grants
Museum Transformation Fund Now Open
Another Arts Council England fund is the Museum Transformation Programme which is designed to enable Accredited Museums to address the longer-term challenges they face. It is also intended to support them to undertake the fundamental shift in their operational models required to stabilise their finances and continue to deliver for their audiences and communities. Grants of £50k to £1 million are available. Deadline is 30 September. Follow this link for further details: Museum Transformation Programme.
Garfield Weston Foundation
Finally, the Garfield Weston Foundation support a wide range of charities that make a positive difference, working in different sectors in the UK. These include welfare, youth, community, environment, education, health, arts, heritage, and faith. Their grants range from £1,000 to several million pounds, depending on each charity’s size and scope of work. Applications are open all year round.
