🧵 1/2: I recently saw this vintage #Qantas poster with a unique “flower” map projection centered on #Sydney (1st image). I love how it almost neatly divides the four largest continents (Eurasia, Africa, and North and South America) into the 4 “petals”.

I sorta became obsessed and wondered if I could recreate it using my mapmaking and coding skills.

Some days of tinkering, coding, and mathing later, I think I managed to do it! (2nd image) 🎉🗺️

The Russian navigation app 2GIS shows an ad for a place... in a completely different location. You’d think this “8 Марта” place is right here, but it’s actually on the opposite side of the city. What you see is just a banner ad.

🗺️ Drawn in the style of the old Wiener Linien single-line maps: geographic, black and white, connecting lines at every stop. My additions: stylised rivers, the rest of the network faintly in the background, north arrow and a scale bar.

🏟️ 3.1 km of new track, seven new stops – and for the first time since line 21 was withdrawn in 2008, you can reach the stadium by tram again.

So the 80th session of the #UnitedNations General Assembly held a vote yesterday on the anti- #Mercator resolution that I wrote about back in June. It passed 164–1, with the #UnitedStates being the lone opposing vote very likely because the resolution is “woke” and goes against Trump’s distaste of DEI.

Oof. Carto now requires an API key to use their #OpenStreetMap raster tilesets like Voyager, Position, and Dark Matter. And they don’t provide any info on their pricing page.

Maybe I’ll go with MapTiler instead.
