'The U.S. was the only country to vote against the U.N. resolution, which encourages the use of an “Equal Earth” map. The U.S. described it as a “radical ideological project.” '

  17. The U.N. has voted to adopt a new world map as standard. They are dumping the Mercator Projection for an Equal Earth Projection, a map that shows landmasses much closer to their real size.

It makes Africa and other equatorial landmasses look larger than previously, and shrinks Europe, North America, Russia, and especially Greenland.

The only country to speak and vote against the resolution was the USA. No surprise.

The US delegate actually sat there and claimed that the UN was ignoring real problems while working on changing maps for idealogical and political reasons (ignoring the science completely). How she stopped from dissolving in a puddle of irony I'll never know. She also claimed that passing symbolic resolutions like changing maps was why the U.N. is "losing its credibility" – the puddle deepens.

Six countries—Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine—abstained from voting.

So the 80th session of the #UnitedNations General Assembly held a vote yesterday on the anti- #Mercator resolution that I wrote about back in June. It passed 164–1, with the #UnitedStates being the lone opposing vote very likely because the resolution is “woke” and goes against Trump’s distaste of DEI.

“The United Nations has voted to adopt a resolution for the world to formally phase out the traditional Mercator map of the globe in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa’s size.
In a session at its headquarters in New York, the UN general assembly officially retired the 16th-century Mercator projection in favour of one based on the more accurate 2018 Equal Earth design.
At the session, 164 countries voted in favour of the resolution. Only the US voted no, with its representative saying the resolution was “superfluous”. There were six abstentions.
UN resolutions are non-enforceable, so countries and institutions will not be mandated to use only the new projection or forbidden from using the old one. However, the outcome is expected to result in an update of classroom curriculums and everyday technology given the wide usage of the Mercator projection in education, technology and governance.
Togo, which spearheaded a campaign for the resolution on behalf of the African Union, said the resolution “recognises and affirms that disproportionate cartographic representations, particularly those resulting from the Mercator projection, have had lasting cognitive, educational, cultural, geopolitical and socioeconomic effects, contributing to a drastic reduction in the perceived size of Africa and other regions of the world in the global collective imagination”.
Speaking before the resolution passed, Robert Dussey, Togo’s foreign affairs minister, said: “This discussion is not a political discussion [but] a scientific discussion, because there is scientific proof so we all have to accept the reality.”
The Mercator layout was introduced by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569 to help sailors navigate the seas. Almost five centuries later, it remains the global standard...”

  28. Tartary (Cartography 🗺️)

Tartary or Tatary was a blanket term used in Western European literature and cartography for a vast part of Asia bounded by the Caspian Sea, the Ural Mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and the northern borders of Medieval China, India, and Persia, at a time when this region was largely unknown to European geographers. The active use of the toponym can be traced f...

  29. This is great news. The Mercator projection makes Africa appear far smaller than it really is—Greenland looks comparable in size, even though Africa is about 14 times larger.
Maps shape how we understand the world, and this distortion has helped make Africa feel smaller, more peripheral, and psychologically distant for generations of Western students. I hope Canada rethinks the maps we use in our schools, too.
