It is an invasive species in Australia, where its barbed spines present danger to wildlife and stock, causing injury and even death. It is difficult to control as it is so tough and easily spread. It can grow from even a fragment of a plant - as in the photo of a piece embedded in my 4x4's tyre. These photos are from Lightning Ridge, NSW.
