“Between 19 and 22 January 2026, the extratropical Cyclone Harry generated the highest individual wave height ever recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, causing widespread coastal flooding and erosion across the central basin. Here [the authors] combine oceanographic and meteorological observations, high-resolution morphodynamic datasets, hydrodynamic modelling, and regional microseism analysis to show that Harry produced the most severe coastal impacts of any Mediterranean cyclone in recent decades. Process-based XBeach and HEC-RAS simulations across 19 coastal sites in Sardinia, Malta, Sicily, and Calabria reveal unprecedented inundation extents strongly modulated by local geomorphology, with submarine canyons, buried palaeo-channels, and urban infrastructure amplifying wave setup and inland flooding. Concurrently, broadband seismic records from 55 Mediterranean stations show exceptional secondary microseism amplification, with Ionian stations reaching the highest amplitudes since the beginning of seismic recordings in 1990. Harry’s Microseism Reduced Amplitude exceeded previous storms and Mediterranean cyclones by more than fourfold, highlighting escalating coastal risk under climate-driven cyclone intensification...”

“Climate change and anthropogenic pressures are increasing risks to coastal systems, feeding the need for adaptation strategies that are both effective and socially accepted. Nature-based solutions (NBS) are gaining prominence for reducing risks while strengthening ecosystem resilience, but their implementation depends heavily on stakeholder acceptance. This study assesses local perspectives on coastal protection in Costa da Caparica, Portugal, a low-lying, densely occupied area exposed to erosion and flooding. Using a participatory framework, combining the Analytic Hierarchy Process with participatory mapping, five stakeholder groups, comprising residents, technical experts, and public authorities, evaluated decision criteria, preferred adaptation strategies, and gaps in current coastal protection. Results show that protection efficacy and maintenance costs were the most influential decision factors, while environmental co-benefits were less valued, particularly by residents. Although most groups favored NBS, the residents/businesses group preferred hard defenses, associating them with greater safety. Mapping revealed consensus that the urban front and camping site areas are underprotected, with recommended actions ranging from expanding dune restoration and nourishment to relocating vulnerable infrastructure and populations. Rather than claiming broadly generalizable preference rankings, this case study documents a transparent, transferable diagnostic workflow for already-managed coasts that links criteria weighting with mapped perceptions of underprotection to support socially responsive coastal planning…”

[They test] ESSP against a gigantic dataset of >50,000 storms across 117 US urban watersheds to show that ESSP is associated with the dominant sediment-discharge hysteresis pattern in a watershed. Urban watersheds cluster into four typologies with distinct sediment responses.
