"The area of the #NationalTrust’s #HolnicoteEstate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and #wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has become parched and brown.
"The two interventions are significant #rewilding projects and provide strong evidence that #NatureBasedSolutions can protect against wildfires. This contradicts claims by some rightwing commentators, who have blamed rewilding for causing #wildfires.
" 'Nature is providing solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing society today,' said Ben Eardley, the project manager at the Holnicote estate. 'For generations as a nation we’ve drained wetlands, straightened rivers and moved water off the land as quickly as possible. Here, we’ve reversed that approach and the results are remarkable.
" 'By reconnecting river systems with the surrounding area and creating natural sponges in the landscape, we’ve created a system that stores water during #drought, keeping wetlands and the surrounding habitats healthy, and slows water during storms and periods of extreme rainfall, helping to protect villages from the risk of flooding downstream.'
"Eardley said the same natural processes that helped wildlife recover were also helping communities adapt to #ClimateBreakdown.
"More than 90% of the UK’s wetlands have been lost over the last century and restoring the habitats to make them wet again is becoming increasingly important for #ClimateAdaptation, #WaterSecurity and #NatureRecovery.
"Harry Bowell, the National Trust’s director of land and nature, called on the government to boost its efforts to invest in nature-based solutions to help the country become more resilient."

Heat wave-hit Europe logs over 30,000 excess summer deaths: First figures
#Europe saw at least 30,000 excess deaths across a blistering summer of back-to-back #heat waves and drought that scientists have blamed on man-made #ClimateChange, according to provisional figures.
Between mid-July and mid-August, the continent's #EuroMomo monitoring platform estimates that Europe saw more than 32,000 excess deaths—with the summer not yet over.
While EuroMomo does not publish breakdowns of deaths by country, various national health authorities have published provisional tolls covering comparable periods stretching roughly between the end of May and August.
An AFP count of those tallies found 33,000 excess deaths or deaths directly linked to the heat across just eight countries: #Austria, #Belgium, #England, #France, #Germany, the #Netherlands, #Portugal and #Spain.

"Today, Canada has one large-scale LNG export facility. Another 11 LNG projects across the country are in various stages. All are foreign-owned. Seven are in B.C., where six are fully permitted or in final regulatory stages."
"If these six projects are constructed, they will release 21 million tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution every year, equivalent to one-third of B.C.’s annual emissions. (…) When the gas is burned, an additional 130 million tonnes of pollution would be released annually. For context, B.C. reduced its annual emissions by 2.3 million tonnes over the last 20 years. Expanding LNG exports means the province is abandoning its climate targets, as communities burn to the ground."
