Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are now 3.05 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, which surpasses the previous record by 0.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record was set in 2015, which, if you remember, was somewhat of an unremarkable El Niño year for Southern California.
I would caution you not to assume anything other than this regarding the news...
Weird things are going to happen with our weather this winter. It's pretty much a guarantee. We are already beginning to feel the effects of El Niño. What is not a guarantee is the frequency or intensity of storms that pass through our region. With that being said, major coastal erosion is a big concern of mine this winter. And with El Niño present, historically, that also could mean a wetter-than-normal winter.
Now is a great time to start making preparations for the "just in case." Whether that means cleaning the gutters, changing your tires, having an evacuation plan in case of flooding, or knowing your home's beach erosion risk, now is the time to do it while it is still sunny.

To that point about something wild with this year's El Nino, this is TD-15. In a matter of hours, it'll become a Tropical Storm and in a couple of days, a Cat-1 or 2 Hurricane.
This is unprecedented record-breaking: 3 storms delivering hurricane-force winds to Hawaii in a single season. The most in a single season, in recorded history, was one.
If the winds and rains don't get you, the rising sea level + storm surge will. At king tides, parts of downtown Honolulu, in the Kakaako District, are flooded.

I read this to mean that a climate change fueled El Nino will trigger mass migration and cause extreme strains on natural resources primarily between the tropical bands.
(An aside: I have a hard time taking people seriously when they represent data that is lacking in sig figs; I got it burned in my brain in AP Chem.)
There's clearly something wild with this year's El Nino.

More than 450,000 people are projected to die from heat brought by super El Niño in next 6mo, according to estimates by #climate scientists.
The toll is on top of the early deaths resulting from temps already driven up by #climatecrisis. It will strike across the globe, from Indonesia to India, and Nigeria to the US. Many further deaths are expected from droughts, wildfires and flooding that El Niños bring.
