  1. #PSA From someone who's been through it: you do NOT want to get dengue; if you visit Florida, take precautions (see first link). Beware: the dengue vaccine isn't available in the U.S., only if you are traveling abroad. No, it doesn't make sense, especially because, as the world warms, we'll see more Aedes mosquitos in the mainland.

  15. Here in #Maine, we saw beaches closed down because of contamination from overflowing sewage which ended up in the ocean from extreme rain events. Expect more of this as #extremeweather increases. Also, keep in mind that humans aren't the only ones being affected by these events -- plants, animals, microflora, bacteria levels, algae, etc.

Explainer: How #ClimateChange is making the world sick

    By Gloria Dickie
    December 4, 2023

"'#ExtremeWeather events are becoming extreme health events,' said Martin Edlund, CEO of global health nonprofit Malaria No More.

"Here's how Climate Change is harming people's health across the world today, and what countries might expect in the future.

    VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
"#Mosquitoes that carry viruses including #dengue, #malaria, #WestNile and #Zika are shifting into new parts of the world as warmer temperatures and #HeavyRains create more hospitable conditions for them to breed.

    MURKY WATERS
"#Storms and #flooding wrought by climate change are allowing other infectious water-borne diseases to proliferate as well.

    EXTREME HEAT AND SMOKY SKIES
"#HeatStress - one of the more obvious health impacts of #GlobalWarming - is projected to impact hundreds of millions of people as temperatures continue to climb through the next few decades."

  16. ‘Three cities in Colombia saw a dramatic fall [up to 94–97%] in the incidence of #dengue in the years following the introduction of mosquitoes carrying #Wolbachia, a bacterium that prevents the insect from transmitting viruses.’

  17. The fight against #dengue fever has a new weapon: a #mosquito infected with the #bacteria #Wolbachia, which prevents the spread of the #virus. These mosquitoes have now been deployed in several trials demonstrating their potential in preventing disease transmission.

  18. A new report shows how bacteria can help defeat dengue fever, the world’s fastest-spreading mosquito-borne disease. The report describes how mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria are released in cities to prevent them from transmitting dengue and other viruses to humans. This innovative strategy could save millions of lives, reduce health costs, and protect the environment.
