I've always been frustrated by the Canadian government's unwillingness or inability to put a check on big tech's intrusion into our lives.
One of the most illuminating takeaways from the quoted podcast episode is that our government previously gave away most of our ability to do so during the CUSMA/USMCA agreement from Trump's first administration.
I had no idea.

There seems to be a lot of cross-talk today about exactly what the Carney government has been angling for with the EU, but I'd say that this is an indication of something.
There seem to be people (or maybe bots) latching on to the idea that Canada is going to join the EU with no notice (which seems logistically improbable, even if it was politically feasible) or on the other hand, interpreting the PM's comments at TIFF last night to suggest that "no EU membership" means that we won't be pushing for the model outlined in the WSJ article from the other day that was dubbed "associate membership".
Rather than get hung up on the semantics, I'm just glad to see that there is evidence of movement in the direction of the "closest possible" productive relationship. Both sides need to do something, so let's get on with exploring what's possible.

This is a great article about the preparations Alberta Elections is going through to enable the 10-question, hand counted, referendum on October 20!
Which of course includes Question 10 on whether to pursue a second referendum on separation from Canada, which will be counted first.
Each voter will be handed 10 colour coded ballots that will then each go into one of 10 colour coded boxes to make counting, and presumably securing the votes, easier.
Question 10 will be counted first and they expect those results to be available after 1AM on October 21.

This is from two weeks ago, but provided me some new insight regarding the parts of the trade war both US/Canadian politicians and corporate media appear to be intentionally minimizing, if not avoiding discussing altogether.
It's not just cars, lumber and aluminum - but something that hits a lot closer to home for all of us.

@PaulBusch So if the Coast Guard sees a boat that they think is smuggling things in, they call the RCMP, who then send in their own boat to intercept? That seems like an unwise use of resources, particularly when the RCMP seem to be over-stretched with different tasks.

I thought the major difference was that the provincial NDPs principally aim to win elections, and the federal NDP principally aims to be ideogically correct.

I found this article shared on Reddit, so I can't be sure it will be readable from here for everybody, but it's worth a read if you can.
It's a sober and presumably well sourced narrative outlining the efforts of the Canadian government and their sympathizers in the #EU to work out a way of irrevocably tying us together on a crash timeline.
If Rupert Murdoch's press is covering this seriously, then I'm going to pay attention and not just assume that it's wishful thinking. The assessment of the challenges, the possible long term benefits (and risks) of #Canada moving much closer to the EU seems to be well thought out.
