  11. What is not proposed by PM Carney:

    • Not to become a third power just with better manners
    • Do not seek power to dominate others
    • Resilience so no one can control our sovereign markets, our freedoms, democracy, or rule of law

But to create the next stable, just, and fair world order and reinforce international law.

  12. What Canada proposes:
    strategic autonomy in:

    • Critical Minerals
    • Defence
    • AI/Compute
    • Space

    • Work, study, and live on either side of the Atlantic 🎉

    • Pool resources, cooperate on frontier technologies and research/universities

    • Stockpile materials for EVs, chips, and other critical things for the energy transition

    • Advanced processing on both sides of the Atlantic.

    • LNG/Hydrogen supplied to Europe

    • Leadership from Europe on clean energy to Canada

    • Pool sovereign compute and broadband capacity, AI safety protocols, etc

    • Explore integrated market for financial services (?!?!) while maintaining financial resilience

    Holy. Crap.

  16. @dyckron It will be interesting to see what would count as "unjustified". He also seems to make no mention of how much the workers might be squeezed. Will there be guarantees that a union workforce will be maintained? (GTAA workers are part of UNIFOR). No wonder unions are peeved.

Of course, the investors will be expected to make a profit, otherwise why would they invest? Those profits must come from either extra fees or reducing costs eg. labour or maintenance.

Stephen Harper ... praised the Carney government during his speech.
“I do congratulate our current federal government on the measures it has taken to fast-track major project approvals, especially for projects in the oil sands. These changes are welcome and they are very important.”

    Later,

Paying for a new pipeline to service these American interests — in the middle of a #ClimateCrisis, during a #TradeWar — would be a deeply stupid thing for Canadians to do.

In every riding polled, 50–59% were less likely to support an MP who backs taxpayer funding for another oil pipeline; 46-58% would be less likely to support a Liberal MP if the government proceeds with pipelines without assessing their environmental impacts:

  38. "Trickle down hasn’t worked for the last 40 years. Why does Carney want to try it again?

Newly announced corporate tax break doubles down on a failed economic model

We already have one year of data from the prime minister’s latest round of corporate handouts. Investment has not budged. What has increased is corporate profits, which have once again reached record highs.

Carney is absolutely right that Canada needs more investment—especially in light of Trump’s trade war. But we can’t keep trying the same old trickle-down tactics that have failed us time and time again, all while creating nearly unprecedented wealth inequality and making us more reliant on the United States.

If Canada wants to increase investment and safeguard our sovereignty, we should start by using our own massive stores of capital to invest here at home. Currently, a whopping 75 percent of the capital controlled by Canada’s largest pension funds

The fossil fuel industry, which has been aggressively lobbying the government for just this outcome, is perhaps the best example of the failure of trickle-down economics in Canada.

Our public resources have been sold to private, largely foreign, investors, and continued tax cuts and subsidies for the industry have not led to sustained new investment, but instead to skyrocketing shareholder payouts, soaring fuel prices for consumers, and rising inflation overall."
