  1. BC is in desperate need of Proportional Representation to provide some stability and sanity for voters and politicians alike.

Let people find their voice and let people represent them!

  2. Canada has binding legal regulations on everything from guns to butter.

    And none for AI.

Are we going to trust people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman to regulate themselves?

Or is our government going to stop cheerleading and start regulating in the public interest?

It’s literally what government is for.

  3. ‘Major AI lab CEOs advocated for slowing the pace of AI development this weekend. They are right to be concerned: the field runs an extremely dangerous race toward superintelligent AI. We can and should be demanding that our governments protect us from the catastrophe of out-of-control AI.’ theguardian.com/technology/202

  4. This is from two weeks ago, but provided me some new insight regarding the parts of the trade war both US/Canadian politicians and corporate media appear to be intentionally minimizing, if not avoiding discussing altogether.

It's not just cars, lumber and aluminum - but something that hits a lot closer to home for all of us.

Note: Excellent podcast if you've never listened.

  5. "Google is bringing its age assurance technology — which uses artificial intelligence to detect underage users — to Canada.

If it mistakenly identifies an adult as being under 18, the company says that person will be able to prove their age using things like a government ID or a selfie.""

  6. @PaulBusch So if the Coast Guard sees a boat that they think is smuggling things in, they call the RCMP, who then send in their own boat to intercept? That seems like an unwise use of resources, particularly when the RCMP seem to be over-stretched with different tasks.

  7. Norway is not in the EU. 🇳🇴

Because it is tightly tied to the EU anyway, a European court still gets to tell it which oil fields it can approve. ⚖️🛢️

The Carney Liberals want Canada to have “everything short of actual membership” in the EU.

That slogan means a court across the ocean gets to tell us what resources we can and cannot develop. 🌊

  8. Canadians should be aware of the Canada Investment Summit, an initiative of the feds to pitch various projects and potential projects as investments to giant pension funds and other large global holders of capital. It will take place in Toronto over the next few days.

For the curious, the prospectus is here: theenergymix.com/wp-content/up

(I haven't read it myself yet.)

Personally, I believe Canada would benefit from more investment, foreign and domestic.

  9. At this rate, Canada will be more aligned with the EU, and have greater trade ties, than the UK - Brexit was such a mistake

Trump read Mein Kampf for instructions, not as warning.

So Mark Carney read Klein's 'Shock Doctrine'

  14. Working on writing yet another few angry letters to government sellout assholes. I don't even know why we have any governments anymore when politicians feel free to break laws whenever they want without any real living consequences.

  17. @virtuous_sloth Not being a member of the #NDP at any level, I'm probably not the right person to comment. But anyway...

I thought the major difference was that the provincial NDPs principally aim to win elections, and the federal NDP principally aims to be ideogically correct.

    Shortest visit ever.

Trump didn't have a chance to rest his cankles before he was "handed his hat'

President of Ireland Catherine Connolly is a fine President. A model to emulate.

  20. I found this article shared on Reddit, so I can't be sure it will be readable from here for everybody, but it's worth a read if you can.

It's a sober and presumably well sourced narrative outlining the efforts of the Canadian government and their sympathizers in the #EU to work out a way of irrevocably tying us together on a crash timeline.

If Rupert Murdoch's press is covering this seriously, then I'm going to pay attention and not just assume that it's wishful thinking. The assessment of the challenges, the possible long term benefits (and risks) of #Canada moving much closer to the EU seems to be well thought out.

“..it’s not including new treatments, it’s not including new best practices, it’s not including stuff that’s, you know, culturally competent, because it’s taking 100 years of medical science and vomiting it into a new textbook, which isn’t accurate.”
