  1. 2/ The Canadian Labour Congress has outlined exactly why this is such a bad idea.

We don’t make Canada stronger by selling off our critical infrastructure.

Protecting Canadian sovereignty means keeping our airports in public hands.

  2. 1/ Privatizing airports is a terrible deal for travellers, workers, and the public purse.

Around the world, it has led to higher travel costs, fewer jobs and worse working conditions.

Private equity moguls and fund managers love it! Once they’re in, they own a piece of a natural monopoly, and they print money for decades.

This is a mistake we do not need to make.

The alternative to privatizing our airports is to NOT DO IT.

  3. Just got back from the demo in Toronto against Carney's privatisation fire sale of Canada to the billionaires.

Not a huge turn out, since Carney is still very popular. But, still pretty sizeable. It divided up into three different areas.

Anyway, it was kinda fun. I liked the chants:

    Money for jobs & education!
    Not for oil and corporations!

    Rich people having a ball!
    Rich people fucking us all!

    Etc.

  4. Watching Carney try and sell off Canada to the highest bidder - noting the likes of Naomi Klein and others urgently warned he would do exactly this

He was head UK banker, waded through all the failures as UK had privatized water, rail, power generation - and now facing to reality of having to nationalize them (again) - even balking about bailing out steel plants for the umpteenth time, and just buying them

Much as I respect Chantal Herbert, I disagree here. There is widespread support to decouple from the USA, including among conservatives. Same for greening the economy, including conservatives, believe it or not.

The cons who are screaming now are the ones who want us to be part of the USA. The hell with them.

  18. RE: mastodon.online/@dcdeejay/1172

I've always been frustrated by the Canadian government's unwillingness or inability to put a check on big tech's intrusion into our lives.

One of the most illuminating takeaways from the quoted podcast episode is that our government previously gave away most of our ability to do so during the CUSMA/USMCA agreement from Trump's first administration.

    I had no idea.

  19. There seems to be a lot of cross-talk today about exactly what the Carney government has been angling for with the EU, but I'd say that this is an indication of something.

There seem to be people (or maybe bots) latching on to the idea that Canada is going to join the EU with no notice (which seems logistically improbable, even if it was politically feasible) or on the other hand, interpreting the PM's comments at TIFF last night to suggest that "no EU membership" means that we won't be pushing for the model outlined in the WSJ article from the other day that was dubbed "associate membership".

Rather than get hung up on the semantics, I'm just glad to see that there is evidence of movement in the direction of the "closest possible" productive relationship. Both sides need to do something, so let's get on with exploring what's possible.

  22. Again, in this clip when Carney mentions the FINRA example, he means AI companies self-regulating. (FINRA is private, industry-financed self-regulation...that the regulated financial firms fight back against.)

Why? Because you wouldn't want to stifle innovation & "legislation takes time."

  23. Yes, this is being coordinated with the G7 but Carney seems to welcome AI companies leading the way.

    Must keep investors calm...

"how to balance innovation with a form of governance that that takes safety into account."

Carney raises self-regulation initially & cites FINRA, For those who don't speak bank, FINRA is an industry-financed self-regulatory body. #CdnPoli

  25. This is a great article about the preparations Alberta Elections is going through to enable the 10-question, hand counted, referendum on October 20!

Which of course includes Question 10 on whether to pursue a second referendum on separation from Canada, which will be counted first.

Each voter will be handed 10 colour coded ballots that will then each go into one of 10 colour coded boxes to make counting, and presumably securing the votes, easier.

Question 10 will be counted first and they expect those results to be available after 1AM on October 21.

  26. Canada has binding legal regulations on everything from guns to butter.

    And none for AI.

Are we going to trust people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman to regulate themselves?

Or is our government going to stop cheerleading and start regulating in the public interest?

It’s literally what government is for.

  27. From an unlikely source (Toronto Business Journal) by Iain Mackenzie, an analysis of what's gone wrong with the NDP in the past few decades.

Conclusion: "To restore the moral conscience of Canada, we must look past the hollowed-out carcass of the modern NDP. We must return to the foundational truth that true social justice is impossible without national independence, and that a nation’s economy must belong to the ordinary people who build it. The time has come to build a new political home that remembers how to fight for Canada."
