  6. Documents shed light on the earliest-known instance of #ClimateScience funded by the #FossilFuel industry, adding to growing understanding of #BigOil ’s knowledge of #ClimateChange . Fossil fuel industry sponsored climate science in 1954.

    February 1, 2024, Rebecca John

Excerpt: "Unknown until now, however, is the fact that Keeling’s earliest research into carbon dioxide across the western U.S. was funded in part by the fossil fuel industry via a private foundation — and that in 1954 this foundation was informed of the potential impact of manmade carbon dioxide emissions on both the climate and human civilization.

"Newly discovered documents affirm that the #automobile and #petroleum industries funded early climate science #Keeling conducted at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) between 1954 and 1956. Records show that 'oil and auto companies' sponsored the scientist’s research via an organization called the Southern California Air Pollution Foundation, formed in 1953 to tackle Los Angeles’s infamous smog. American Motors, #Chrysler, #Ford, and #GeneralMotors were among 18 automotive companies that gave money to the foundation.

"A 1959 internal U.S. Public Health Service memo also identifies the #AmericanPetroleumInstitute ( #API ) and the #WesternOilAndGasAssociation — the oldest petroleum trade association in the U.S., which is now known as the #WesternStatesPetroleumAssociation — as 'major contributors to the funds of the Air Pollution Foundation.' Its Board of Trustees included top-level representatives from the Southern California Gas Company, the Southern California Edison Co., Chrysler, General Motors, and Union Oil (now #Chevron).

"And from mid-1955, these trustees were also appraised of research projects by a seven-man 'technical advisory committee,' which included a senior official from API as well as scientists from the Richfield Oil Corporation (now #BP ) and #Chrysler.

"With the discovery of these Air Pollution Foundation documents, it is now possible to date the earliest sponsorship of climate science by the fossil fuel industry to 1954, approximately a quarter of a century before Exxon’s internal research program of the late 1970s. These new documents provide important evidence that the fossil fuel industry has been intricately connected to climate science from its earliest beginnings — not only as a driver of the greenhouse effect behind climate change, but also as a contributor to the scientific discoveries that would transform our understanding of humanity’s relationship with the Earth and its atmosphere. 7. "Hotter oceans
exacerbate the sea level rise and extreme storms that threaten billions of people, as well as driving marine heatwaves that decimate sea life and undermine coastal livelihoods, scientists warned."

"The average surface temperature was 21.1C, with the rising marine heat a stark indicator of the climate crisis. More than 90% of the heat trapped by carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning enters the oceans."

"Most of the planet-heating CO2 from fossil fuel burning and forest destruction is absorbed by the oceans. However, a hotter ocean is less efficient at absorbing CO2. This is potentially weakening one of the planet’s most important natural buffers against global heating, the scientists said."

“Fossil fuel emissions need to be rapidly reduced. Meanwhile, it is essential that countries protect marine and coastal ecosystems. Kelp beds, mangroves and marshes absorb carbon and coral reefs protect against storms and provide habitat. More than 190 governments have committed to protect and conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030, and now is the time to turn that commitment into effective, durable conservation on the ground.” >>

  10. It's not difficult to extrapolate from an understanding of #homeostasis as noted in individuals to population and ecological community levels. Alas, #fossilfuel companies encouraged #Lovelock and #Margulis in their #Gaia research, as it was surmised their findings would lull the general public to believe the earth would self-regulate regardless of levels of pollution. It probably did help with the propaganda.

To maintain homeostasis, however, always requires an #EROEI. We have dysregulated the ecological homeostasis. When it costs as much to sell and ship an item as we can make from doing so, we will stop doing so. Ships, aircraft, trains, barges and trucks are vulnerable to this. WE are vulnerable to this. >>

  11. how #fossilfuel #energy #dependency #bankcrupt #nations: #usa #israel #war on #iran raises #oilprice and with it the #petrodollar: Transaction demand: Crude is invoiced in dollars, so when oil prices jump buyers and exporters need more USD to settle trades and hold reserves, lifting dollar demand and value. European Union
Petrodollar recycling: Oil-exporting countries receiving larger USD revenues often reinvest into dollar assets (e.g., Treasuries), increasing capital flows into the U.S. and supporting the USD. Medium
Interest-rate/yield channel: Higher oil-driven inflation can prompt the Fed to keep rates higher (or markets price higher expected U.S. yields), attracting foreign capital into U.S. bonds and equities, which bids up the USD. Yale University youtube.com/watch?v=XxTC-2NDLS0

  14. Its is no longer simply US taxpayers paying the price for #FarRght Extremist Fallacies From #WhiteHouse...

While #Europe is losing nearly €500 million a day due to rising fuel costs alone brought by the US created conflict in the #PersianGulf...Iran has walked away from negotiations while the US thinks its strategy will cause Iran's oil infrastructure to collapse due to lack of ability to store the excess #crude.

Across the globe the sudden oil shortage is pissing off US Allies, ranging from far eastern countries like #Thailand & #Bangladesh on to #EU president von der Leyen who told the #Hague last wk that in just 60 days of US driven conflict, “our bill for #fossilfuel imports has increased by over €27 billion, without a single molecule of additional energy”

On April 26, 2026 #DJT told #FoxNews #Sunday Briefing the goal of USA shutting down Iranian oil wells was to trigger production shutdowns of Iranian #oil and cause their pipelines to explode from pressure...

The US administration’s belief that their bullying blockade will simply destroy Iranian resolve and infrastructure, and trigger immediate economic collapse, #hyperinflation, and global shortages, has also been echoed by #NewYorkTimes, which recently repeated creepy claims from U.S. officials stating that Iran's oil wells “cannot be turned on and off, and they would be damaged if they are forced to shut down,” and arguing that these risks will force #Iran to the table to quickly “make a deal to avoid such long-term problems.”

The US President echoed this strategy last week on #Foxnews
“What happens is that line explodes from within. Both mechanically and in the earth, something happens where it just explodes, and they say they only have about three days left before that happens,” Drumpf said “And when it explodes, you can never rebuild it the way it is.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, went on #MelonHusk's X platform to claim “IRGC Leaders are trapped like drowning rats in a sewage pipe,” adding that “Iran’s creaking oil industry is starting to shut in production thanks to the U.S. BLOCKADE. Pumping will soon collapse. GASOLINE SHORTAGES IN IRAN NEXT!”

Iran simply disputes these assessments, saying they have far more capacity for oil and the western propaganda is always "trying to sow fear among the Iranian public"

“Iranian oil fields, wells, and pipelines aren’t going to explode from being shut down,” assures Robin Mills, of the Center on Global Energy Policy.

“It certainly is a major gamble from the Trump administration.” said Brett Erickson, a sanctions and geopolitics expert of strategic consultancy firm Obsidian Risk Advisors. “They better be holding all the cards as they say they are, otherwise Iran is going to beat us on the river card, and the entire world economy is going to pay the price.”

  16. The Details Behind US President Trump’s Primetime Speech

Since February 28, the Islamic terrorist regime of Iran has been heavily decimated by the joint US-Israel military operations. To date, almost all of Iran’s senior leadership were eliminated, their navy and air force have been devastated, their military/industrial/government sites have been struck, and their new so-called supreme leader could not even show himself physically to his people. While it is still able to launch missiles at different states in the Middle East, Iran has been weakened dramatically and its wicked regime is clearly down on its knees.

Since the beginning, it was made clear that the joint operations were to bring down the Islamic terrorist regime, disarm it and pave the way for the oppressed Iranians to take their country back. The Trump administration made it clear the operations won’t be a “forever war” nor would it follow what the administration of past US President George W. Bush did during and after the invasion of Iraq. US President Trump just delivered a primetime speech to give the public a clear view about the direction America is taking right now regarding the weakened Iran. Beyond the fighting, what happened has been shaping the future of the Middle East as we know it.

To begin with, posted below is the primetime speech of President Trump. Watch it entirely and pay attention closely.

    https://www.youtube.com/live/OzhLRPZfOMQ?si=7P6W-ATCitH6kqNf&t=551

To put things in perspective, posted below is are details from Trump’s speech via the White House announcement. Some parts in boldface…

Here are the top moments from the address:

    • “As we speak this evening, it has been just one month since the United States military began Operation Epic Fury targeting the world’s number one state sponsor of terror, Iran. In these past four weeks, our Armed Forces have delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield — victories like few people have ever seen before. Tonight, Iran’s navy is GONE. Their air force is in ruins. Their leaders, most of them — the terrorist regime they led — are now dead. Their command and control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Core is being decimated as we speak. Their ability to launch missiles and drones is dramatically curtailed and their weapons, factories, and rocket launchers are being blown to pieces — very few of them left. Never in the history of warfare has an enemy suffered such clear and devastating large-scale losses in a matter of weeks.” (Watch)
    • “From the very first day I announced my campaign for President in 2015, I have vowed that I would never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. This fanatical regime has been chanting ‘Death to America, ‘Death to Israel,’ for 47 years. Their proxies were behind the murder of 241 Americans in the Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut, the slaughter of hundreds of our servicemembers with roadside bombs, they were involved in the attack on the U.S.S. Cole, and they’ve carried out countless other heinous acts… For these terrorists to have nuclear weapons would be an intolerable threat. The most violent and thuggish regime on earth would be free to carry out their campaigns of terror, coercion, conquest, and mass murder from behind a nuclear shield. I will never let that happen.” (Watch)
    • “I did many things during my two terms in office to stop the quest for nuclear weapons by Iran… First, and perhaps most importantly, I killed General Qasem Soleimani in my first term… And then, very importantly, I terminated Barack Hussein Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal… Essentially, I did what no other President was willing to do. They made mistakes and I am correcting them.” (Watch)
    • My first preference was always the path of diplomacy — yet, the regime continued their relentless quest for nuclear weapons and rejected every attempt at an agreement. For this reason, in June, I ordered a strike on Iran’s key nuclear facilities in Operation Midnight Hammer… The regime then sought to rebuild their nuclear program at a totally different location, making clear they had no intention of abandoning their pursuit of nuclear weapons… For years, everyone has said that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons — but in the end, those are just words if you’re not willing to take action when the time comes.” (Watch)
    • “As I stated in my announcement of Operation Epic Fury, our objectives are very simple and clear. We are systematically dismantling the regime’s ability to threaten America or project power outside their borders… Our Armed Forces have been extraordinary. There’s ever been anything like it militarily — everyone is talking about it — and tonight, I am pleased to say that these core strategic objectives are nearing completion. As we celebrate this progress, we think especially of the 13 American warriors who have laid down their lives in this fight to prevent our children from ever having to face a nuclear Iran… Now, we must honor them by completing the mission for which they gave their lives.” (Watch)
    • “Many Americans have been concerned to see the recent rise in gasoline prices here at home… This short-term increase has been entirely the result of the Iranian regime launching deranged terror attacks against commercial oil tankers and neighboring countries that have nothing to do with the conflict. This is yet more proof that Iran can never be trusted with nuclear weapons. They will use them and they will use them quickly. It would lead to decades of extortion, economic pain, and instability worse than we can ever imagine. The United States has never been better prepared economically to confront this threat.” (Watch)
    • To those countries that can’t get fuel — many of which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, we had to do it ourselves — I have a suggestion. Number one, buy oil from the United States of America; we have plenty. We have so much. And Number two, build up some delayed courage… Go to the Strait and just take it. Protect it. Use it for yourselves. Iran has been essentially decimated. The hard part is done.” (Watch)
    • “I have made clear from the beginning of Operation Epic Fury that we will continue until our objectives are fully achieved. Thanks to the progress we’ve made, I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly — very shortly. We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We are going to bring them back to the stone ages where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing… We have all the cards; they have none.” (Watch)

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this development? Which part of Trump’s speech did you find the most compelling or most interesting? Can you imagine the Middle East being free from the armed threat of Iran? Do you think the Islamic terrorist regime of Iran will get penalized by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other states for the Iranian missiles and drones that hit them? Do you feel confident that the price of oil will go down this month?

A report found #MethaneEmissions in the #PermianBasin to be nearly four times higher than #EPA estimates. A senator wants an explanation.

    By Ellyn Lapointe
    Published March 20, 2026

"#FossilFuel extraction is a known source of #methane leaks, releasing large amounts of this potent #GreenhouseGas into the atmosphere. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency appears to be drastically underreporting emissions from the nation’s largest oil-producing region.

"Nearly half of U.S. oil comes from the Permian Basin in West #Texas and southeastern #NewMexico. The region generates more than $100 billion annually for the U.S. economy, and apparently, a whole lot of methane, too. A recent report from #MethaneSAT—a methane-sensing satellite that observed Earth from March 2024 to June 2025—found emissions from the Permian Basin to be nearly four times higher than the EPA’s official estimates."

Excerpt: "[O]thers who have known Zeldin wonder what happened to the middle-of-the-road lawmaker they once knew, who acknowledged that humans were warming the Earth and bucked Trump’s first administration on offshore oil drilling.

" 'He’s really turned out to be a chameleon in the political landscape,' said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, who is based in Zeldin’s former congressional district. 'He’s always had higher political aspirations, and I believe he has his eyes set on the White House.”

"Green groups on the island say they feel betrayed by the slash-and-burn style Zeldin is bringing to EPA. Sea-level rise poses a serious threat to the low-lying coastal region he calls home, and he had expressed support over the years for shifting to #RenewableEnergy — in contrast to Trump’s pro-#FossilFuel agenda. By Maeve Campbell
    Published on 01/02/2022

"Lithium extraction fields in South America have been captured by an aerial photographer in stunning high definition.

"But while the images may be breathtaking to look at, they represent the dark side of our swiftly electrifying world.

"Lithium represents a route out of our reliance on #FossilFuel production. As the lightest known metal on the planet, it is now widely used in electric devices from mobile phones and laptops, to cars and aircraft.

"#LithiumIon batteries are most famous for powering electric vehicles, which are set to account for up to 60 per cent of new car sales by 2030. The battery of a #Tesla Model S, for example, uses around 12 kg of lithium.

"These batteries are the key to lightweight, rechargeable power. As it stands, demand for lithium is unprecedented and many say it is crucial in order to transition to #renewables.

"However, this doesn't come without a cost - mining the chemical element can be harmful to the environment.

Trump’s “#BigBeautifulBill” has billions for oil and gas companies: tax breaks, deductions, and pay-to-play #environmental #deregulation

by Antonia Juhasz, July 10, 2025

"The new law compounds the already $17 billion in direct federal subsidies U.S. taxpayers pay to oil, gas, and coal companies every year. It cuts hundreds of billions of dollars in tax incentives for #RenewableEnergy, despite it being cheaper, healthier, more efficient, and more reliable than #FossilFuels. As a result, the law threatens nearly a million U.S. jobs and will result in higher electricity and transportation costs for people living in every state in the continental U.S.

"The power of the fossil fuel industry over Trump and the #RepublicanParty is on full display in their Big Beautiful Bill. Mike Sommers, president of the #AmericanPetroleumInstitute, the fossil fuel industry’s largest lobbying group, told CNBC, 'It includes almost all of our priorities.' "

"Large majorities of people around the world support both taxing #oil, #gas, and #coal companies for the #EnvironmentalDamage made worse by fossil fuels and using higher taxes on #polluters to support communities most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis, according to the results of an international survey released Thursday.

"The study, which was jointly commissioned by #Greenpeace International and #Oxfam International, surveyed roughly 1,200 people in each of these 13 countries: #Brazil, #Canada, #France, #Germany, #India, #Italy, #Kenya, #Mexico, #Philippines, #SouthAfrica, #Spain, #UnitedKingdom, and the #UnitedStates. The research was conducted by the data company Dynata, and field work was done between May 9-28, 2025. Greenpeace noted that, taken together, the countries represent close to 50% of the globe's population.

"The results of the survey showed a whopping 81% of those surveyed would support taxes fossil fuel companies to pay for damages wrought by 'fossil-fuel driven climate disasters.'

"These survey results send a clear message: people are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of fossil fuel giants all over the storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said #MadsChristensen, the executive director of #GreenpeaceInternational.

" 'It's only fair that those who caused the crisis should pay for the damage, not those suffering from it,' he added.

  27. #StandingRock Chair on #Greenpeace Verdict -- False, Self-serving Narrative in Insulting Lawsuit

"If Greenpeace can be held liable for telling the truth about #SiouxNation Treaty rights, then we are all in trouble."

By Standing Rock Chairwoman Janet Alkire, via #CensoredNews, March 27, 2025

"As Chairwoman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, I take offense to the jury verdict in the #EnergyTransfer #SLAPP lawsuit against Greenpeace. We expect more from #NorthDakota judges and members of the jury from our neighboring communities.

"#EnergyTransfer’s claims in this case were ridiculous. They were wholly disrespectful of the #StandingRockSioux Tribe, our ancestors, and our youth, who started the movement in 2016 to protect our water from an oil spill from #DAPL. Neither Greenpeace nor anyone else paid or persuaded Standing Rock to oppose DAPL.

"Our young people and our elders urged us to protect our water and #UnciMakah (grandmother earth). That is what happened, and is happening still. Energy Transfer’s false and self-serving narrative that Greenpeace manipulated Standing Rock into protesting DAPL is patronizing and disrespectful to our people.

"We understand that many Morton County residents support the #OilIndustry, even out-of-state #pipeline companies such as Energy Transfer. But we are your neighbors, and you should not be fooled that easily. Energy Transfer does not know us. They don’t know who we are – an Indigenous Nation that has survived every attack because our ancestors are with us.

"Greenpeace did not manipulate Standing Rock, but #EnergyTransfer has manipulated #MortonCounty. DAPL crosses our Treaty and aboriginal land for hundreds of miles.

"Our ancestors occupied this land for thousands of years before #NorthDakota came into existence. The land between the Heart and Missouri River are our #unceded Treaty lands under the 1868 and 1851 Fort Laramie Treaties. Our aboriginally-occupied territories extend east to the James River and beyond. That is a historical truth. If Greenpeace can be held liable for telling the truth about Sioux Nation Treaty rights, then we are all in trouble.

"The construction of Fort Rice on our northern boundary in 1864 was a violation of the Fort Laramie Treaties. This required our Tribe to be vigilant. No one should be surprised that warrior society burials are found in this area, near the pipeline route.

"And do not insult our cultural experts, who have wisdom over matters most residents of Morton County or bureaucrats at the State Historical Society know absolutely nothing about. Energy Transfer and its lawyers should be ashamed of themselves. Everyday North Dakotans on the jury should know better.

"When it comes to the excessive police and private security response to the generally peaceful protests at #CannonBall, believe your eyes. The scenes of guard dogs menacing Tribal members are reminiscent of the violence of #WhiteSupremacists in the #DeepSouth during the 1950’s and 60’s, but it was in North Dakota, in this day and age. It was on the news and on the internet.

"Many of the protesters were Native American veterans of the United States armed forces. Energy Transfer used attack dogs against peaceful protesters and war heroes. But the jury sided with the out-of-state, unlicensed security with the attack dogs, instead of North Dakota veterans who supported Standing Rock.

"A Texas oil company has come to North Dakota, and its lawyers and propaganda machine are weaving stories about how the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and our supporters have lied, and how the poor pipeline company, a trillion dollars richer than in 2016 when this all started, should receive extra millions from non-profit organizations. It’s a funny thing about liars – they always accuse everyone else of lying. The Greenpeace trial was marked by secrecy.

"The court is not making the transcript public. The documents obtained by Greenpeace about Energy Transfer’s terrible safety record are protected by a secrecy order and are not available to the public. The judge exhibited so much bias in favor of Energy Transfer that a team of international human rights lawyers felt compelled to monitor the trial. One prominent monitor stated 'In my six decades of legal practice, I have never witnessed a trial as unfair as the one against Greenpeace that just ended in the courts of North Dakota.'

"Standing Rock has tried to work for greater transparency on DAPL. It is our experience with the Army Corps of Engineers and Energy Transfer that all documents relating to DAPL pipeline safety are heavily redacted, and kept secret. What are they hiding? Who is looking out for the communities that may be affected by an oil spill? And why didn’t the North Dakota court allow Greenpeace to address these questions at the trial?

"DAPL is a dangerous pipeline. It crosses our unceded Treaty and aboriginal land. Energy Transfer destroyed Tribal burials as identified by our cultural experts, and committed violence against our people. That is the history that North Dakota and Morton County must reckon with. After the Greenpeace verdict, that day seems farther off than ever."

  28. And how much economic damage is from climate change and pollution from #FossilFuels? #BigOil is the real criminal here!

#ClimateProtesters are taking action against Big Oil. UK courts are handing them prison terms akin to rapists and thieves

    By Kara Fox, CNN
    September 14, 2024

London CNN — "As #RightWing rioters attacked communities with #racist violence across parts of the UK last month, 22-year-old #ClimateActivist #CressieGethin sat in a prison cell.

"Her crime? Organizing a disruptive protest against new government-granted licenses to drill for oil — a planet-heating #FossilFuel — in the #NorthSea.

"In late July, a London court found #Gethin and four other members of the #JustStopOil activist group guilty of 'conspiring intentionally to cause a #PublicNuisance,' after recruiting protesters to climb structures along the M25 — a major ring road around London — bringing traffic to a standstill in parts over four days in November 2022.

"Prosecutors alleged that the protests, organized over a #ZoomCall, disrupted more than 700,000 drivers, caused economic damage of over £760,000 ($980,000) and racked up £1 million ($1.3m) in policing costs.

"Now Gethin and three others — Louise Lancaster, #DanielShaw and #LuciaWhittakerDeAbreu, who planned the disruption on the call — are serving four-year jail terms, while Just Stop Oil co-founder #RogerHallam was given five years. All are appealing.

"The sentences are believed to be the longest in the UK’s history for #nonviolent protest and were delivered under two new controversial laws that supercharged #policing powers to crack down on disruptive protests, even when they are peaceful.

"They place the act of planning a 'public nuisance' event, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, on a similar footing as #ViolentCrimes like robbery, for which punishments range from community service to 12 years’ jail, or rape, which is four to 19 years.

"The judge — who in court referred to the activists as '#extremists' — justified the long jail terms because all five activists had previously been convicted of one or more offenses in relation to direct action protest. Each were on bail for another set of proceedings when the Zoom call took place. He also noted people missed important doctor’s visits and funerals because of the protest.

"But activists like Gethin say their demonstrations are proportionate to the problem at hand — a rapidly warming world that threatens to transform life as we know it, through deadly #ExtremeWeather events and by pushing #ecosystems to their brinks. They are now battling the bolstered powers of the #police and courts to get their point across.

“'A very harsh sentence like this doesn’t make sense morally or legally — but it does make sense politically,' Gethin told CNN in a handwritten letter from HMP Bronzefield, a women’s prison just south of London’s Heathrow Airport.

"The laws have drawn criticism from the UN’s special rapporteur on #EnvironmentalDefenders, #MichaelForst, who said not only do they criminalize peaceful protest, but they are being enforced in 'punitive and repressive' ways."

  29. No surprise...!

Oil and gas lobbying reaches $72 million in first half of 2024

    By Molly Taylor
    August 15, 2024

"The American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers led the oil and gas industry in federal lobbying expenditures in the first half of 2024, marking the first time the trade association outspent the top individual companies in the industry.

"The trade association, which represents 450 fuel refining and petrochemical companies, leads the oil and gas industry with $8.1 million in federal lobbying expenditures over the first half of 2024. This level of spending marks a shift in influence, as individual oil and gas companies have typically outspent the trade association by millions of dollars.

"The oil and gas industry altogether spent $72 million on federal lobbying in the first six months of 2024 as the #EPA introduced some of its strongest-ever regulations to reduce #FossilFuel emissions. The industry is on track to exceed last year’s expenditures, which totaled $137 million after adjustment for inflation, and is the fifth-highest lobbying industry of the year.

"The American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers emerged as the top spender after doubling its federal lobbying expenditures from 2022. Between 2016 and 2022, the trade organization spent, on average, $3.4 million annually without adjusting for inflation. In 2023, spending jumped to $6.9 million in 2023.

"In the first six months of 2024, the American Fuel and #Petrochemical
Manufacturers has already spent more on federal lobbying than any prior year."

#MethaneSat will provide near-comprehensive global view of leaks of potent #greenhousegas from oil and gas sector, and all of the data will be made public. Methane, aka #naturalgas, is responsible for 30% of #globalheating driving the #climatecrisis. Leaks from the #fossilfuel industry are a major source of human-caused #emissions and stemming these is the fastest single way to curb temperature rises.

  31. #MethaneSAT potential "game changer"

Govt of Canada has "some of the most stringent regulations w/ ambitions to cut methane leaked and emitted by oil & gas production by up to 75%, from 2012 levels, by 2030"

MethaneSAT's mission: to fill "critical data gap" in identifying potent GHG. Able to identify, quantify and attribute #fossilfuel field emission for 80% of global production sites.

    #Methane is:
🔺 "wildly underreported" by some provinces
    🔺 80x more harmful than CO2

  32. Inside the last-ditch effort to stop the #MountainValleyPipeline

The project is over budget and behind schedule, with a lot of hard work left to do. Its opponents hope that makes #FossilFuel companies think twice about building the next one.

    By Katie Myers
    Published Jan 16, 2024

"As day broke over the small mountain town of #EllistonVirginia, one Monday in October, masked figures in thick coats emerged from the woods surrounding a construction site. Three of them approached three excavators and, one by one, locked themselves to the machines, bringing the day’s work to a halt. As they did so, several dozen of their fellow protesters gathered around them, unfurling banners and chanting amid the groaning and beeping of construction equipment.

"They made their way across the field, over patches of bare earth, around sections of rusty pipe meant for burial beneath the mountain. Eventually the metal tubes will form yet another section of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which will soon carry 2 billion cubic feet of #fracked #methane from the #ShaleFields of #WestVirginia to #NorthCarolina each day. Their breath billowed in the crisp air. Beyond them stretched a bright blue sky, and mountains tinged with yellow. The past night’s rain pooled on the muddy and compacted soil beneath their feet.

"Workers in highlighter-yellow vests and hard hats milled around, some looking amused, others frustrated. One or two engaged with the #protesters, only to be told off by an irate site manager. A few miles away at the West Virginia state line, another three dozen or so activists did much the same atop #PetersMountain. One even managed to crawl under an excavator and lock herself in place, despite the cold. The others rallied around, enclosing her in a tight, protective circle.

Some might wonder why they bothered. After all, the project is, by the Mountain Valley Pipeline company’s estimate, 94 percent complete and will be wrapped up before summer. It stalled for several years amid legal fights over various permits, but Senator #JoeManchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, almost single-handedly revived it in 2022 in exchange for his support of key Democratic priorities. Since then, the Biden administration and the Supreme Court have all but assured its completion. With the approximately 303-mile pipeline approaching the final stretch after almost a decade’s work, it might seem hardly worth fighting at this point.

"A large contingent of steadfast opposition begs to differ — and will enthusiastically explain why. The pipeline is six years behind schedule, about half a billion dollars over budget, and, despite promises that it would be done by the end of last year, delayed once again. The remaining construction is over rugged terrain, with hundreds of water crossings left to bridge. The company recently postponed, shortened, and rerouted its planned extension into North Carolina, a proposal long stymied by permitting problems with the main line. And, just last month, #Equitrans, which owns the #pipeline and many others across the country, was said to be considering selling itself. The road to the pipeline’s completion remains rocky, its opponents argue, with many opportunities to make finishing it as difficult as possible.

"'We cannot let them destroy our land and water,' said a young woman named Ericka. Like many interviewed for this story, she gave only her first name out of fear of reprisal from #MountainValleyPipelineLLC, which has begun suing #protesters in a bid to silence them. She had brought her three children to occupy the land that day. 'What are we going to drink? Where are we going to live? People have to come here and stop this.'"

  33. And in southern #Maine, retirees are making their voices heard!

#ElderActivists join forces to combat #ClimateChange

#ThirdActMaine, made up of retirees, is making itself seen and heard in its effort to get companies to divest in #FossilFuel companies.

“'We don’t know how our actions will affect things, but it’s important to be out there and forming community around this issue,' [retiree Bill Rixon] said. 'Being out there on the sidewalk, I’ve found, is really good for my soul.'

"Part of the idea behind the group, he said, is that #retirees are in a better position to put themselves at risk of #arrest.

"'We don’t have to worry about our employment record being sullied by being arrested,' Rixon said, though the group has no intention or expectation of being arrested.

"'The goal is to hopefully urge #corporations to do the right thing,' he said."

  34. #Toolkit: #Protest #safety tips from #Greenpeace

"Protest is a powerful strategy to demand #justice. Greenpeace has been holding and supporting protests around the world for nearly 50 years. Because of this, we’ve received requests and messages asking for advice on protest tactics, digital, and physical security against #militarized #police forces. While we have compiled this from a US point of view where this Greenpeace team is based, we hope some of what is here is helpful beyond the US.

"We are continuously learning, learning from mistakes, learning from each other. The #activists that make up our Greenpeace community, also come from many protest practices and methods, including #Indigenous-led resistance to #FossilFuel #extraction, the #ImmigrantRights movement, the Movement for Black Lives, [#BLM] and others. We wanted to share some of our learnings so that you can join us in protests that demand systemic changes from fighting for #ClimateJustice to dismantling #WhiteSupremacy. We support you and are fighting with you.

"We want to acknowledge that there are many different types of protest tactics, and that this is not an exhaustive list. We also want to acknowledge that communities of color, especially Black communities and other non-Black Indigenous and communities of color, are policed differently than white communities.

"When we protest we have an opportunity to demand the world we need and to understand how the issues we face are interconnected. As we fight for environmental justice, we show up for racial justice, Indigenous rights, immigrant rights, disability rights and more. While this guide focuses on protests, even if you are not able to join us in the street you can support those who are protesting by providing supplies, donating to bail funds, providing rides, having important conversations with your coworkers, friends, families, and neighbors.

"Also, we want to remind you that we are not your lawyers. This is not legal advice, any tips contained here are only to assist you in thinking through how to engage in protest activity. We urge you to connect with your local organizing and legal community for additional support."
