  1. #MontanaTribe Opposes ‘Slap on the Wrist’ Fine for #IllegalMining That Polluted #WaterSource

by Elyse Wild May 26, 2026

"The #FortBelknap Indian Community is opposing a settlement between the state’s Department of Environmental Quality and mining companies that illegally mined on the tribes’ ancestral homeland, harming crucial water sources for the reservation.

"From 2020 to 2022, #BlueArcLLC and #LegacyMiningLLC conducted mining activities at the #ZortmanMine in the #LittleRockyMountains without permits, licenses, or performance bonds, resulting in damage to ongoing environmental reclamation efforts.

"The #ZortmanLanduskyMine opened in 1979 and was operated by #PegasusGoldCorp. until it filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Two decades of mining activities caused widespread surface and #GroundwaterContamination, and in 1999, the DEQ and Bureau of Land Management took over the site. In 2001, Luke Ployhar, owner of Blue Arc LLC, bought the land out of the bankruptcy under the condition that the #DEQ had ongoing access to conduct #reclamation activities.

"The two agencies spent approximately $85 million cleaning up the area, according to the consent order. The site needs #WaterTreatment in perpetuity, meaning the additional cost to #taxpayers could exceed hundreds of millions of dollars.

"The illegal mining activities damaged the continuous #environmental cleanup and caused contaminated water to flow downstream to the #FortBelknapIndianCommunity, polluting its water.

In 2022, the state proposed a $516,567 penalty for Blue Arc LLC and Legacy Mining LLC. On Friday, May 22, the DEQ reached a settlement with the companies for $200,000, to be paid over five years. The agreement does not require an admission of wrongdoing."

  6. #NativeAmericaCalling: #BorderWall construction damaging #SacredSites

    Tuesday, May 26, 2026

"Construction crews working on the wall on the #USMexico border in #Arizona significantly damaged a 1,000-year-old #geoglyph located in #CabezaPrieta #NationalWildlifeRefuge. It’s one of a number of places tribes on both sides of the border say are damaged or are threatened by the fast-tracked construction process. #Tribal leaders say such desecration is happening at a record pace after the #Trump administration sidelined #cultural and #environmental barriers to construction. We’ll hear from cultural historians and policy experts about that is being lost and what can be done about it.

  11. Bee sensible T-shirt

This is another organic cotton T-shirt in adult size from our Scientist and Philosopher range that we have produced on the Teemill platform. Our environment and all living things are under ever creasing pressure from the actions of the human species. We need to act sensibly towards the systems that have allowed us to live the lives we currently lead. Bees especially as well as other pollinators are responsible for much of the food we eat and we must therefore do all we can to keep them healthy. As an individual you can avoid using any man made chemicals in your gardens. On a larger scale you can join groups and protest the use of commercial agrochemicals in our food production.

See how these products are made and how they can be returned and the material reused once they are worn out. Hopefully, this means a lighter load on the environment and on our natural resources. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

The T-shirt is available from our Teemill shop, https://scientistandphilosopher.com/product/bee-sensible-v1b-adult-t-shirt/.

  18. More #DataCenters, more #environmental problems?

As #AI’s reach grows, the need for data centers multiplies. So, too, could the #EcologicalImpacts without hands-on mitigation.

By Ambika Kandasamy, Sep 24, 2025

Excerpt: "A December 2024 preprint of a study from researchers at the University of California, Riverside, and California Institute of Technology outlined the toll of AI-related #AirPollution. 'AI contributes substantially to air quality degradation and public health costs through the emission of various criteria #AirPollutants,' the authors wrote.

"Other forms of #pollution, such as light and noise, also could be problematic. Neil Carter, an associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability, has studied the links between #SensoryPollution and conservation. While he hasn’t researched #AIDatacenters’ impact on #wildlife specifically, he says AI data centers potentially could be '#SensoryDangerZones.'

" 'Sensory danger zones are basically where we have reason to believe that the amount of light and the amount of noise is exceeding thresholds by which you can imagine there being a fitness consequence for species,' Carter says. 'And they may not be able to carry out the necessary functions that they normally would.' Research by Carter and his colleagues has explored how #LightPollution, for example, could disrupt the dynamics between predator and prey species, such as #cougars and #MuleDeer. Their research also has looked into how #AnthropogenicSounds could affect reproduction in #birds including the #NorthernCardinal, #OakTitmouse and #BarnSwallow.

"To address some of these issues, experts recommend adopting sustainable strategies when building and operating AI data centers and when using AI. The decisions 'we make today will be having an impact on the public health for many years to come, due to the long life span for data center projects,' says Shaolei Ren, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Riverside, and an author of the #AirPollution study."

  29. Plants – The lungs of Earth T-shirt

Plants, the lungs of planet Earth, Scientist and Philosopher.

The natural world, the plants, the trees are the lungs of the Earth allowing the more complex living lifeforms to live and evolve. Without them or if we damage these systems too much ecosystems will start to break down. Unfortunately we have been battering natural systems with our human progress at least since we started agriculture perhaps 11 or 12 centuries ago. All plants and trees effectively “breathe” in some form or another but more now than ever it is important to stop both forest and other ecosystem destruction such as meadows and prairies. We must also review where we plant new trees and what sort of trees we plant if we plant them at all. Rewilding is not just about planting any seedling anywhere because complex ecosystems have developed over centuries and millennia. In leaving these remaining wildernesses alone we must as humans leave them in peace for true rewilding and evolution to take place.

This is a women’s organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range.

Trees form a large part of the planet’s life support and regulatory systems that we and all other creatures depend on. We must stop cutting them down. It’s not just a question of planting new trees to replace old growth forests as they are more than just trees being complex evolved ecosystems. If you read the science press you will find that daily there are reports of further damage to these ultimately crucial parts of the Earth’s ecosystems and physical processes.

  40. Freedom of the seas T-shirt

This is the second Scientist and Philosopher T-shirt in the Freedom of the seas – Protect our oceans series (design V2B). It is printed on an organic cotton T-shirt so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

The seas and oceans of the world are suffering in so many ways. There’s plastic pollution and acidification. They have absorbed the majority of the heat caused by burning fossil fuels and are filled with various forms of our industrial waste. Our ships make the world beneath the waves incredibly noisy. They also kill creatures such as whales directly. All the waters are over fished subsidised with fossil fuels and some of the catch fed to herbivore farm animals. We humans have and are continuing to completely mess up this part of our small planet.

Check out how these clothes are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

  42. Bee sensible T-shirt

This is another organic cotton T-shirt in adult size from our Scientist and Philosopher range that we have produced on the Teemill platform. This version of the T-shirt is with white lettering for the darker colours.

Our environment and all living things are under ever increasing pressure from the actions of the human species.
