  1. The Calm Week

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

For two or three weeks I was afraid of overdoing it, and then the bad weather came, and public holidays, and suddenly I’m resting more than I expected to. Yesterday would have been an exhausting ride if it had taken place, but due to fresh snow, wind and rain it was cancelled.

The result is that I was saving my energy for an event that never came so now I’m rested again and losing form. Form is easy to get back. Tomorrow I go for an “easy” run in Morges, if you like to wake at 04:30 to be ready to run at 05:50 and wait for the clock chimes to signal the signal of the start of the run. We could call it The Pavlovian Runners, for obvious subtextual reasons.

A hike was planned for Saturday but it was then cancelled, not because of the sixty percent chance of rain, but because of the wind. To some degree this makes sense, given how exposed that walk is. I was going to do an ambitious pre-group walk walk. Walk from Montreux to Caux, to join the group, and then walk with them for the next 15km. It would have been 1200m of climbing, and 18km or so of walking.

As usual I have the option of a ride from Nyon, another from Geneva, and a hike in the Valais by some interesting Geology. Saturday the weather is good for Geneva, but that would be a century ride. I’d ride 50km solo, and 50 with the group. Pacing is key. Staying in zone 2 works well.

    A Good Opportunity

A hike is organised to the pyramids and I have been thinking of that project for years, at this point. It’s the geological feature in Valais. That’s a longish walk and it makes a nice change from all the cycling I have been doing. It also allows me to meet new types of people.

    A Change of Pace

If I hike, rather than cycle or run, then I get back to one of my core sports. I like to hike, and with a different pace, conversations may flow more easily, especially if we take the train and talk on the way there, and back. In theory my decision will be made when I get snacks for the activity I choose.

  5. Thursday #Workout:
11 minutes of yoga for runners.
    30 minutes of yoga .
    10.3 KM of #Walking (7°C, 95% humidity, and 10 KM/H wind).

Forty minutes of yoga this morning (which seems to get harder?), then another fast walk, picked up groceries, and walked home (you can see the change in speed for the last 1.3 KM or so).

It's hard to walk this quickly, especially while paying attention to the dodgy knee. Progress is progress.

  6. Headed out for today's 14.1 km walk with bated breath. Would today be the day that the old ticker sends me to the doctor? Well, no. About the same speed at 9:21 per but the heartrate was down to a moderately light 100 bpm (67%). The mystery abides. It was a gentle 11.7C with 71% humidity.
Other than that, I got nothing.

  11. #ThursdayThoughts

    Darby Creek, PA

This beautiful spot is only an 8-minute drive and a short walk away, but it’s been too busy to visit 😞
I’ve ended up fishing more often lately at farther locations near my son’s soccer practice fields 🤔

  12. Like sands through an hourglass, so too the walks of our todays. Or something. 14.1 km in rather a pleasant 16.1C with 78% humidity. A pretty snail-like 9:24 per that apparently almost killed me at a pounding 146 bpm (a deadly vigorous 97% of the max). I, too, would like to know what's going on.
That is all the news so far.

  17. #WellnessWednesday

    Darby Creek, PA

While it feels like I am too busy, taking my son to soccer practice allows me to spend some time on the water during the weekdays, so I think the situation is not so bad, although I wish they practice near this creek 😉

  18. Tuesday #Workout:
11 minutes of yoga for runners.
    30 minutes of yoga.
    10.1 KM of #Walking (4°C, 71% humidity, and 9 KM/H wind).
1.4 KM of walking with @TAV.

Lots of yoga for the morning workout, before knocking out a reasonably fast 10KM walk before meeting TAV at the bank to deal with some silliness (It didn't get resolved, because … bank. 🤦🏻)

  19. Thought I was zooming on today's 14.0 km walk. Felt like I was zooming, alas only 9:07 per km and an almost moderate, but still light at 103 bpm and 69%. Not zooming.
The weather continues to be clement at 11.1C and 74% humidity.
