  15. Miracle pills should be on the NHS

I’m about to start my first 30 days of a higher dose of Wegovy (4.5 mg, up from the 1.5 mg starter dose). I’ve done nearly 60 days at the lower dose, and it has been very successful. I’ve lost 9.5 kg (1½ stones or 21 lb), and I’m on the cusp of passing the 100 kg mark and entering double figures. If I can lose the same again over the next couple of months, I’ll be in “optimal weight” territory.

I foolishly didn’t measure my waistline at the beginning of this, but can confirm I’ve lost 4cm (1½ inches) since 24 August. NHS advice is that your waist should be about half your height, so there’s a way to go there, but there are a couple of pairs of shorts and trousers I already can’t wear without cinching a belt tight to hold them up.

The best news of all is that I’ve been doing daily blood pressure readings since we got back from France, and this morning I recorded a miraculous 102/68, which is classed not just as “Normal” but “Optimal”. Now, I’ve been giving high blood pressure readings since I was in my 30s. There’s definitely a slight “white coat” effect (higher when in a doctor’s surgery), but I’ve been on medication now for a long time. And even on medication, I would only ever record “High Normal” at best (which in my case is first thing in the morning, because I take my meds at night).

A year or so ago, last July, I delivered readings between 110 and 160 over 73–91. Last September, my range was 129-144 / 74-82 and in November 135-150 / 78-86. And this morning, I recorded two readings, at an average of 112/70, including the second reading (the one that counts) of 102/68.

I don’t remember it being that low. Ever.

All of which leads to the conclusion that Wegovy and its relations are freakin’ miracle drugs. Weight loss, waist loss, normal blood pressure, feeling better, feeling positive.

Which does make you wonder. I pay Boots £99 for 30 days of 1.5 mg, and the price goes up to £119 for the 4.5 mg I’m about to start*. In two months, I’ve experienced all the health benefits relayed above after literal decades taking multiple medications to control my blood pressure and cholesterol. Annual blood tests, regular diets (that fail), feeling demoralised, unhappy, unhealthy.

    Two months: transformed.

So why am I doing this privately instead of on the NHS. Because if this was on the NHS, it could transform the nation. There would be massive knock-on effects on all the down-the-line consequences of obesity. It’s weird.

*Upping the dose might not look necessary, given the progress I’ve made on 1.5 mg. But there has been a return of appetite and “food noise” in recent weeks, so I want to squash it down a bit. I think I might need two more months on the higher dose, and then maybe a couple on the lower dose again, to “reset the set-point” of my weight. The maintenance phase.

(I wrote about my initial experience of the drug here and here.)

TITLE: A surprising brain discovery could help explain why we overeat fatty foods

    URL: sciencedaily.com/releases/2026

A protein inside appetite-controlling brain cells may play an important role in preventing overeating and obesity, particularly when high-fat foods are readily available. Unexpected differences between males and females could also help explain why obesity risk—and responses to weight-loss drugs—can vary.
