How Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Max executed a 16-day autonomous coding project without human aid

Alibaba has officially launched Qwen3.8-Max, marking the release of its largest and most capable flagship artificial intelligence model to date.

Featuring 2.4 trillion total parameters and support for a context window reaching up to 1 million tokens, the new multimodal foundation model introduces major upgrades across coding, research execution, long-horizon planning, and visual intelligence.

The flagship model ranks fifth overall in the Text Arena and second in the Vision Arena benchmarks. Access is currently available via application programming interfaces (APIs) on Alibaba Cloud Model Studio for global developers, as well as on QwenWork, the company’s enterprise workplace AI platform. Alibaba plans to release the model’s weights publicly next week.

Architecturally, Qwen3.8-Max builds on the Qwen 3.5 framework by combining a Sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) system with a hybrid attention mechanism. To balance large-scale processing with operational efficiency, the system selectively activates only 95 billion of its 2.4 trillion parameters during inference, cutting computational costs and latency compared to traditional dense architectures of comparable size.

In technical evaluations, Qwen3.8-Max demonstrated high autonomy in extended software design and long-horizon tasks, earning a fourth-place ranking in the Frontend Code Arena. During an internal 16-day trial, the model built a self-evolving agent framework from scratch without human intervention. The resulting project, named “oh-my-cli,” continuously synthesized user feedback, community practices, and self-test data through an automated development loop before being open-sourced on GitHub.

Key performance milestones and technical capabilities of Qwen3.8-Max include:

• Advanced research & intent recognition: Outperformed human participants in the WWW2025 Multimodal Dialogue Intent Recognition Challenge by analyzing complex customer service interactions, while also reproducing published scientific experiments and generating optimized methodologies.
• Multimodal document processing: Ingests hundred-page documents, complete television series, or up to 100-hour video livestreams, automatically converting unformatted media into searchable, interactive knowledge bases.
• Interactive visual generation: Creates 3D interior renders from 2D floor plans, reconstructs frontend web code directly from interface screenshots, edits raw footage into vlogs, and builds functional video games from text prompts.
• Closed-loop application recreation: Tested under the new RecreationBench benchmark, where it recreated full software applications in a black-box environment with no internet access or source code, relying solely on real-time visual feedback and interactive testing.

The model is structured to handle enterprise workloads across financial research, legal document processing, application development, sports analytics, architectural modeling, and rehabilitation tracking by combining reinforcement learning environments with scalable compute.
