“Keeping On” by Bill Tope
Leo lay in repose on the bed in his modest clapboard house. But his body was not still. First, he drew up a knee and then lay it flat again. Next, he waved his arm in the air for no apparent reason. He dispassionately considered his errant movements and tics and remembered seeing a man on the television the day before. That man, a famous actor named Michael, was afflicted with the same disease as Leo. Michael was ten years younger than Leo, but had the disease for a decade longer than he.
Michael was a mess, Leo decided. He was much worse than Leo, his symptoms more profound. Leo’s head didn’t swivel helter-skelter on his neck, and he didn’t bend at the trunk and twist his torso this way and that. Did he? He took stock of his body, the body he had for more than 70 years. It. Was. Never. Still.
Leo recalled the way that others, on the streets or at his bus stop or in stores he frequented, looked at him. Often, they would avert their eyes and walk in another direction. What’s the matter with you? he silently shrieked inside his head. But their behavior was a mystery no more. It was like Leo’s eyes opened. He sighed.
Leo shrugged for no reason. He flexed his neck. When he answered the phone, he had difficulty making himself understood. Once, when he played his voicemail message back to check it, he didn’t recognize his own voice. He sounded like he’d had a stroke.
His disease progressed rapidly over the last several years, since his mother passed away. Leo moved back in with her to take care of her as she became old and frail. His mother loved him very much and unconditionally. He sighed again and silently thanked God that his mother didn’t live to see the condition he was in now. She would have wept.
Leo felt dizzy, lightheaded. Leo was a writer. His disease had no apparent effect on his ability to create stories and poems. He sat before his PC and typed as he listened to Pink Floyd on the stereo. The anthem off their greatest album, a song called “Brain Damage,” brought it all back home to Leo. He thanked God again. He was still in much better shape than Michael was in. Leo knew his time would come, but he took comfort in the fact that he was not in a wheelchair or a bed–yet.
Leo recalled his meeting with a fellow writer he’d been in touch with for years via email. She told him with devastating candor that his writing was such that she always imagined him as normal.
“Thanks, Melinda,” he replied with a wry smile. “I like to think of myself that way, too.” Melinda was instantly contrite. She didn’t mean to insult Leo or to hurt his feelings. He told her that he was only joking. The last thing he wanted to do with a friend was to play the disability card.
Watching Michael on TV, he could see what was in store for him, but he remained unaffected, mostly. He had grown philosophical about his destiny. Tonight, he would write another story, spin a narrative involving perfect characters and those not so perfect. He would create a universe out of whole cloth. A universe where he could be anything he wanted to be. It was his saving grace. He would keep on keeping on.

वरिष्ठ कवि नरेश सक्सेना की एक प्रसिद्ध कविता है – शिशु
शिशु लोरी के शब्द नहीं
संगीत समझता है,
बाद में सीखेगा भाषा
अभी वह अर्थ समझता है ।समझता है सबकी भाषा
सभी के अल्ले ले ले ले,
तुम्हारे वेद पुराण कुरान
अभी वह व्यर्थ समझता है ।
अभी वह अर्थ समझता है ।समझने में उसको, तुम हो
कितने असमर्थ, समझता है
बाद में सीखेगा भाषा
उसी से है, जो है आशा ।कविता को ग्रहण करने के दो ही रास्ते हैं, या तो जो कविता में कहा गया है उसे शब्दशः सही मानकर उसके रस में डूब जाए कविता को पढ़ने सुनने वाला| या फिर कविता में जो कहने की कोशिश की गई है उस पर सोच जाए| यह कविता बहुत कुछ सोचने के लिए प्रेरित करती है|
विकासात्मक जीवविज्ञान और न्यूरोसाइंस के घेरे में भी क्या उपरोक्त कविता सही सिद्ध होती है? यह एक वैज्ञानिक तथ्य है कि माँ के गर्भ में रहने के दौरान लगभग 24वें सप्ताह से ही शिशु माँ की आवाज़ सुनना और पहचानना शुरू कर देता है| गर्भ में पानी (Amniotic Fluid) के माध्यम से माँ की आवाज़ की जो फ्रीकवेंसीज़ उस तक पहुँचती हैं, वे उसे किसी दबी हुई सुरीली धुन जैसी प्रतीत होती हैं। शिशु शब्दों के “अर्थ” को नहीं, बल्कि माँ की आवाज़ के “टोन” (स्वर-लहरी) और “पिच” को समझता है, जिसे वैज्ञानिक भाषा में Motherese या Parentese कहा जाता है।
माँ बिना गीत गाए भी अगर सिर्फ बात करे, तो बच्चा शांत हो जाता है। न्यूरोसाइंस के अनुसार:
- माँ की आवाज़ सुनते ही शिशु के मस्तिष्क में तनाव पैदा करने वाला हार्मोन ‘कोर्टिसोल’ (Cortisol) तुरंत कम हो जाता है।
- प्रेम और सुरक्षा की भावना जगाने वाला हार्मोन ‘ऑक्सीटोसिन’ (Oxytocin) तेज़ी से बढ़ता है।
- माँ की आवाज़ और उसकी धड़कन की लय शिशु के दिल की धड़कन और सांसों को नियंत्रित करती है, जिससे उसका पूरा तंत्रिका तंत्र (Nervous System) शांत हो जाता है|
यह भी सर्वविदित है कि जन्म के समय शिशु की आँखों की रोशनी बहुत धुंधली होती है, इसलिए वह दुनिया को समझने के लिए जिन तीन बातों पर निर्भर करता है, वे हैं उसकी माँ की आवाज़, माँ का स्पर्श और माँ की सुगंध। माँ के गर्भ में माँ की नाभि से जुड़ी नालिका के माध्यम से जीवन पाते शिशु को जन्म लेते ही शॉक लगता है क्योंकि अब उसे नायक या मुंह से सांस लेनी होती है यह उसके जीवन का पहला और सबसे बाद झटका है, शरीर विज्ञान के आधार पर भी और भावनात्मक रूप से भी| इसलिए समझदार डॉक्टर बच्चे को माँ के गर्भ नाल से अलग करते ही बच्चे को माँ के ऊपर लिटा देते हैं जिससे माँ और शिशु दोनों के नग्न शरीर एक दूसरे के स्पर्श से स्पंदित हो जाएँ और शिशु को माँ के स्पर्श से सांत्वना मिल जाए कि वह सुरक्षित है| माँ और शिशु का यह निर्वस्त्र आलिंगन शिशु की सुरक्षा के लिए बेहद महत्वपूर्ण होता है|
माँ और शिशु की त्वचा का स्पर्श शिशु के शरीर में एंडोर्फिन जारी करता है, जो प्राकृतिक पेनकिलर और रिलैक्सेंट का काम करता है।
शिशु अपनी माँ के दूध और उसकी त्वचा की गंध (Olfactory Cue) को भी पहचानने लगता है।
ऐसे वैज्ञानिक समझदारी के घेरे में सुरक्षित रूप से यह कहा जा सकता है कि शिशु को “लोरी के संगीत” या “सुर-ताल” से शांति नहीं मिलती, बल्कि उसे अपनी माँ की आवाज़ से मिलने वाले “परिचय और सुरक्षा” से शांति मिलती है।
शिशु में संगीत का कोई “सौंदर्यबोध” नहीं होता। उसके लिए माँ की आवाज “अस्तित्व की सुरक्षा” है|
शिशु के मस्तिष्क में प्रसन्नता और विश्राम का केंद्र तब सक्रिय नहीं होता जब संगीत अच्छा हो, बल्कि तब सक्रिय होता है जब वह माँ के बोले किसी “जाने-पहचाने पैटर्न” को पहचानता है। गर्भ के 9 महीनों के अनुभव के कारण माँ की आवाज़ ही उसका एकमात्र जाना-पहचाना पैटर्न होती है। अजनबी आवाज़ कितनी भी सुरीली हो, वह शिशु के लिए एक “अपरिचित स्टिमुलस”ही है, जो उसे सतर्क तो कर सकती है, लेकिन शांत नहीं कर सकती।
शिशु और संगीत में महत्वपूर्ण “विधा” (लोरी या संगीत) नहीं है, बल्कि “स्रोत” (माँ) है। माँ यदि लोरी की जगह सामान्य बातचीत भी करे, तो भी वह शिशु को किसी भी पराई सुरीली लोरी से ज़्यादा सुकून देगी।
शिशु के लिए सुख का आधार सुर-ताल का विज्ञान नहीं, बल्कि माँ से जुड़ाव का जैविक सच है।
शिशु संगीत नहीं समझता, वह समझता है केवल अपनी माँ की आवाज! शिशु के लिए दुनिया की सबसे अच्छी गायिका की आवाज एक अजनबी आवाज है और ऐसी आवाज सुनने पर शिशु के मस्तिष्क का केवल ऑडिटरी कॉर्टेक्स यानी सुनने वाला हिस्सा सक्रिय होता है। वह उसे केवल एक “ध्वनि” के रूप में प्रोसेस करता है।
जबकि माँ की आवाज़ सुनते ही शिशु के मस्तिष्क के कई हिस्से एक साथ चमक उठते हैं और इसमें भाषा समझने वाले हिस्से के साथ-साथ भावनाओं, आनंद, और चेहरे की पहचान करने वाले हिस्से भी तुरंत सक्रिय हो जाते हैं। माँ की आवाज़ सुनते ही शिशु के न्यूरोलॉजिकल सिस्टम में डोपामाइन और ऑक्सीटोसिन हार्मोन का तेज़ी से स्राव होता है। और यही न्यूरोकेमिकल प्रतिक्रिया है शिशु को सुरक्षा, अत्यधिक आनंद और गहरे लगाव का अहसास कराती है।
शिशु के लिए लता मंगेशकर की गाई लोरी के कोई मायने नहीं हैं, भले उसकी माँ की आवाज कर्कश हो, उसके लिए वही आवाज सुरताल का स्रोत है| अजनबी की आवाज़ कितनी भी सुरीली हो, वह शिशु के मस्तिष्क में जैविक रिवॉर्ड सिस्टम को ट्रिगर नहीं कर पाती।कविता में शिशु से क्या तात्पर्य है यह कवि के अंदर ही स्पष्ट होगा| यहाँ जो व्याख्या है यह गर्भावस्था और जन्म लेने के 1-2 महीने तक के बच्चे के लिए सत्य है|
