  1. New at my Patreon... When I was visiting Cape Town in 2018, I caught a local train to Muizenberg. This attractive seaside district has a beach which is popular with both swimmers and surfers - and, on occasion, sharks. Hence Cape Town's Shark Flag system:

  3. Great news for Capetonian lovers of theatre and former patrons of the old Alexander Bar: something very exciting and brand spanking new, yet classic: it is The Antique.

  5. Great to see my talk from @pyconafrica 2025 is up! youtu.be/XztfWbKkZvQ?si=NsJ8_K

It's a bit of a long watch, but hopefully conveys how we tried to take a thoughtful approach in building a product that uses #GenAI, in this case an internal bot that answers questions about City of #CapeTown policies.

(Note for readers - for 2025, @pyconza joined forces with @pyconafrica, to great success)

  6. About 300km north of #CapeTown, there is a ridge of mountains, separating out #Namaqualand from the southern biome.
The pass through the mountains is Piekeneerskloof.

  7. Had a lovely visit to the #CapeTown Science Centre yesterday. Not too overwhelming, but plenty to expend a little person's energy and pique their curiosity! There is also a very good board game library. Highly recommended for a spare afternoon or two. The annual membership rates are very reasonable, so suspect we'll be back

  8. I had a good day yesterday, watching 4 films :)

"The Last First: Winter K2" (imdb.com/title/tt39150288/) - a rather heavy one to start with, about an expedition up the #mountain #K2 that goes badly wrong.

Next was "The Wind's Thirst" (imdb.com/title/tt39172060/), about some indigenous Colombians at the mercy of #coal extraction and #WindFarm projects redirecting river water and subjecting them to violence.

"Hell's Army" (imdb.com/title/tt39830102/) - was very interesting - about the origins of the #WagnerGroup and their involvement in various wars.
In the Q&A afterwards, they said that some former Wagner Group members are now security on #Russia's "Shadow Fleet" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_).

Last was "Notes From The Underground" (sheffdocfest.com/film/notes-un) about the #HipHop music scene in #CapeTown and how it developed under #apartheid up to the present day.
In their Q&A they said they spent 34 days in 2017 filming, but lost all the footage in the burglary :( After mourning for a while, they then had to go back and shoot it all again.

There were loads of other interesting-looking films I would like to watch, but I could only make the Sunday :(

There was also a #BurningMan series on #HBO (imdb.com/title/tt29033873) that they showed a couple of episodes from, but I was too late to get tickets. I really need to look out for that as my mate said it was good!

  13. Watch out for the black hole!

SAPIENT.rocks rover getting sucked into the black hole space exhibit.

Took some time in memoriam at the Cape Town Science Centre on Friday to tinker with the rover and get some new things set up, got to interact with some excited learners from Parklands College and AIMS and connect about Planetary Science with robots.

  14. Misty morning commute.
The fog had rolled in from the Atlantic, about 500m to the right of this. Pedestrians here don't generally wear hiviz anything, so alertness is strongly encouraged.
