  5. ULTRAVOX
    Vienna
    1980 Canada pressing

A stone cold classic before I head out and start my Monday.

One of my favorite #80s records that I will never tire of.

I know diehards prefer the earlier #70s Ultravox records, but Vienna is the one for me.

The first one with Midge Ure on it, replacing the departed (he left, he didn’t die) John Foxx.

Full of really great tunes, and one of the defining albums of the early eighties #synthpop genre.

One of my all-time favorite fun and ridiculous facts:
The title track, unquestionably the band’s biggest song, reached #2 on the UK singles chart.

The song that kept it from being #1?

    Joe Dolce’s “Shaddap You Face”.
    😂

Apparently, good taste was on vacation in 1980.

  7. DEFTONES
    Around The Fur
    2011 U.S. reissue

    More Deftones!

I remember how excited I was when this came out in ‘97. I had just spent a year and a half obsessing over Adrenaline, and was really hoping that Around The Fur would be just as good.
    Was it ever.

Not only was it good, it was superior in EVERY way, and took a huge creative leap forward.

It is somehow HEAVIER, but also super atmospheric and dreamy.
It’s more melodic, the guitars are down-tuned and absolutely pummeling, and Chino’s lyrics and voice are emotional and soaring.

This is their first GREAT record, and it would only get better from here, because White Pony was on the horizon.

I still feel like The Deftones are underrated.
They’re huge, and people love em, but I feel it’s not enough.
    Incredible band.

  9. THE MUPPETS
The Muppet Movie (Original Soundtrack Recording)
    1979 Canada pressing

The Muppets were a pivotal part of my childhood.
From The Muppet Show to the subsequent movies, those characters and songs are tattooed on my heart and soul forever.

Until today, it was the only soundtrack of the initial run of movies (Movie, Caper, Manhattan, Christmas Carol) that I didn’t own on vinyl.

Regardless of how you feel about The Muppets, this is worth owning solely for Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection”, just a stunningly beautiful song regardless of how old you are.

An even bigger bonus is that this was a used copy that STILL had the movie poster inside of it. They’re almost always missing.

If I were to ever adopt a child, I’d want it to be Animal.

  11. DEFTONES
    Adrenaline
    2022 U.S. reissue

From the beginning, I never understood why they got lumped in with all of those inferior shithead “nu metal” bands.

For starters, they were first out the gate, and were around before any of those asshole bands reared their very ugly heads (and music).

Musically, DEFTONES were always a far more interesting and dynamic band. Amongst all those pummeling guitars and pounding drums was always an incredible sense of melody and songcraft.

I was a fan of them right from the start. As a junior in high school, I was instantly obsessed with Adrenaline.
Their very first record, it’s far from their best. It is however, one of my two favorites.

Chino is an incredible front man, and as a live act, they’ve always been just MAMMOTH.

My love for this band will never waiver. And it all started here.

  13. VARIOUS ARTISTS
You’re No Big Deal (Grunge, The U.S. Underground And Beyond 1984-1994)
    2025 UK 4xCD Box Set

I was DEEPLY saddened to learn of the passing of L7’s Jennifer Finch from brain cancer.
    Really awful news.

So, I’m pulling this great Cherry Red set out in her honour, as L7 were a significant part of that particular brand and era of music, and because my second favorite L7 song is on here (“Shove”).

    I LOVE this set.
Some interesting choices here to go along with the usual suspects.
All the grunge-a-riffic Seattle bands (minus an obvious few due to licensing issues I’m sure), as well as legendary tentpole #80s bands like Husker Du, The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr., Superchunk, and more.

Even “Sex Type Thing” is on here, which may seem like an odd choice, but it’s 100% completely appropriate.

Pour some of your 40 out for Jen Finch today.

Rockin’ some jazzy boom-bap from the fuckin goats.

Check Your Head will always be my favorite Beasties album. It is a flawless magnum opus and in my mind, the greatest #HipHop album ever.

Ill Communication is not far behind. Sometimes, I just need to hear it.

  17. JACK MUDURIAN
    Downloading The Repertoire
    1996 U.S. CD issue

Truly one of the batshit craziest discoveries I’ve had in a long while.

Recorded in the Summer of 1981, Jack Mudurian was an older man who lived at the Duplex Nursing Home in #boston Ma.
He claimed to have a repertoire of 'almost as many songs as Sinatra'.

So, someone recorded him with a cassette recorder on the Duplex porch… UNINTERRUPTED.

    Seriously.
    UNINTERRUPTED.

For 47 minutes straight, Jack unleashes a truly bizarre stream-of-consciousness hellfire.

It sounds like an unmedicated retiree having the world’s greatest stroke.
    It’s incredible.

It’s wild listening to this craziness, with no breaths, & see the numbers on the track counter advance, with no real line of delineation.

Birds are singing, other elders are heard singing in the background…
    It’s insane.

This might be the greatest recording of all time.

  19. KING CRIMSON
Frame By Frame (The Essential King Crimson)
    1991 U.S. 4xCD Box Set

The last of the really cool CD acquisitions from yesterday, and it was so reasonably priced, I couldn’t leave without it.

A pretty comprehensive oral history of King Crimson; 3 discs of compiled album tracks from every period, with a 4th disc of live recordings the same.

The book is SUPER COOL, but for me, it takes a backseat to the awesome (and complete) King Crimson family tree, drawn by Hideyo Itoh.
That alone is a cool art piece and suitable for framing.

I love EVERY era and EVERY iteration and lineup of King Crimson, but this morning, I’m starting with the ‘81-84 Disc #3 (the “Discipline” era), a run only touched by the original ‘69-71 run.
Fripp, Belew, Levin & Bruford are magic together.

Musik Music Musique 1979 (The Roots Of Synth Pop)
    2026 UK 3xCD Box Set

I had ordered this a bunch of months ago, and had completely forgotten about it.
It finally arrived at my local shop today, and I couldn’t be more pleased.

I’ve bought A LOT of these fantastic Cherry Red multi-disc boxes this year, and this might be my favorite one yet.

This is a bit of a prequel to their Musik Music Musique series that dove deep into the important and pivotal synth pop of the early #80s .

THIS one focuses on 1979, when underground electronic pop STARTED to become a legitimate (and sellable) genre of music.

It’s an incredible buffet of multiple genres that would merge to create the stuff the #80s collection explored.
    #postpunk , #prog , #experimental #synth music and yes, even #disco.

Just look at that incredible tracklist, man.
Well known hits AND obscure gems.

  23. SCREAMING TREES
    Invisible Lantern
    1988 U.S. CD 💿 issue

    Awesome little find today!

As much as I love the #90s Trees output (and I do LOVE IT), the major label money and production value made them a bit of a different band in comparison to the earlier SST albums like this one.

Their earlier records lean more into hazy & heavy #psychedelic #garage rock than the #grunge -a-riffic albums from the halcyon 90s alternative days.

I don’t see a lot of these early SST Trees albums lying around on CD, nevermind vinyl.

It’s a bit of a shock to hear Lanegan’s vocals on these albums if all you’re familiar with is the deep, gravelly voice from their heyday.
Here, his voice is much higher-pitched, and perhaps not yet affected by a lifelong journey into drugs.

A pretty great album, with one of my all time favorite Trees tunes in “Smokerings”.

  25. So many great bands all this years... I mean, between 2005-2019 (until pandemic). So much talent, originality, deep proposals, powerful aesthetics, etc. all dead, all left behind. All forgotten, after struggling so hard to emerge and becoming something moderately big, without positive reply, without support, without help, withour response...

I keep those projects in my heart and I value them like a treasure, a rare treasure I was lucky to meet. Thank you for having done those gold pieces for me and for the few around the world who appreciate your hard and rare work. Love you all...

    Inner Space
    1977 Germany pressing

It’s hot as hell on the island today, so I’m content to just chill inside today and stay cool while listening to music.

A warm, spacious and atmospheric #jazz record between two masterful improvisers.

In the case of Yamashita, this is far more mellow and refined than his previously intense and raw works. It’s quite reflective and intimate sounding, and perfect for a day like today.

I think that even people who don’t appreciate jazz at all can throw this on and appreciate how rich and great it sounds.

    Side question, though.

    Who names their kid “Adelhard”?

  29. KARL ERIKSON
    Aerogramme
    1973 Canada pressing

An earthy, organic #folk #countryrock record, Aerogramme was one of the first handful of records I bought after moving to Canada.

Fantastic organic sounding #70s production, but that wouldn’t mean anything if the songs weren’t any good, and these are great tunes. Wonderfully constructed, all anchored by Erikson’s familiar sounding and comforting voice.

All three of Erikson’s albums are great, but this one is the one for me.

Since leaving the music business, Erikson has worked in Australia as an Associate Professor of Contemporary Communication at Central Queensland University, He has been an academic researcher, ethnomusicologist & producer in Australia, where he has spent decades studying and documenting Indigenous music and culture.

If he was my teacher, I’d only ask questions about Aerogramme.

All Ears (10 New And Original Hits With A CB Theme)

Quite the ridiculous record that I just couldn’t pass up, because it looked JUST like my kinda stupid.

Made for Radio Shack in the mid #70s , this is a collection of songs that all have a CB theme to them.

Rock, jazz, R&B, gospel, soul… this thing is ALL over the place, but all the songs drive down the Citizens Band 2-Way radio highway.

In all honesty, there’s some pretty good tunes on here. “Honey Bee (Please Answer Me)” by Randy Goodrum is a particular standout for me, as is “Everybody's Somebody (In Our C.B. World)” by Ed Bernet.

    For only $1.00, I couldn’t go wrong.
Pretty entertaining shit, straight down to the “Index Of Terms Used By CB’ers” on the back cover.

    10-4, good buddy.
    Over and out.

  33. CYNDI LAUPER
The Goonies 'R' Good Enough b/w What A Thrill
    1985 Canada 7” pressing

A killer find from my trip downtown today!

This song is forever tattooed on my childhood due to its affiliation with one of my all-time favorite movies, The Goonies.
Every time I hear it, I’m transported right back to that movie theatre where I saw it on opening weekend in Milford, Ma.

Both the record AND picture sleeve are in immaculate shape, and I’ve never owned one before where BOTH were intact. I either saw the sleeve either no record, or the record in just a shitty plain paper sleeve.

    Pure sentimental #80s joy, man.
It’s the little things that make you happy.
And this makes me very happy.

  35. JAWBREAKER
    Etc.
    2022 U.S. Ltd. Edition reissue

If the R.E.M. collection Dead Letter Office that I posted is my favorite b-sides & rarities album ever, THIS would be a very close second.

On this Masto, I’m on record many times in saying that #jawbreaker is one of the three or so most beloved bands of my lifetime. They have enriched my life in so many ways that it’s hard to imagine.

THIS collection gathers all the split 7” songs they did with other bands, stray B’s, cover songs, and alternate recordings throughout their existence.

Perfect way to start off a Monday morning and head into a new week.

A quick note: I’ve always preferred the Dear You-era recording of “Boxcar” that appears here (as well as on the expanded edition of Dear You). It’s got way more muscle, and just sounds waaay better.
Have always loved the Psych Furs cover as well.
