August 7, 1983: I crossed New York Route 17 just after descending Agony Grind and entered Harriman State Park, a place historic on the AT. When the idea of this long-distance trail was conceived in 1921, only a few sizable stretches of existing trail could be incorporated.

A hike I often make when teaching in Dresden: from Schmilka on the Elbe up the Heringsgrund and zigzagging through the sandstone.

Yesterday I climbed several C/D #ViaFerrata to the summit of the #Spielmäuer, 1,360 m. Unusually sweat-inducing for November, but I’m not complaining. Highlight: High up in the air, you have to climb 30 m up a rope ladder along an overhang and around a roof edge. Very wobbly, and with a view straight down into the abyss!

With dropping temperatures, the desert hiking season in Southern California has started — in fact, temperatures this weekend will be slightly lower in the desert than closer to the coast, which happens when we have Santa Ana weather during the cooler seasons. I'm hoping to get out there and re-visit some of my favorite places, such as this one, in the Coyote Mountains Wilderness.
I'm facing mostly east for this photo so the sun is setting behind me. You may notice the subtle anti-crepuscular rays in the sky. Kinda neat.
Also look closely on the mud-hill ridge that leads down into the wash, that's the "official" hiking trail. :)

July 14, 1983: Entering Pen Mar Park was a relief. In the years around 1900, this spot was billed as the Coney Island of the Blue Ridge, with an amusement park, seven hotels and about a hundred boarding houses. After years of slow decline, the park was forced out of business by World War II gas rationing in 1943.
