  5. Fall cankerworm (Alsophila pometaria). If you have a moment to enlarge the image, check out the reduced 3rd proleg on the left-hand side of the loop, toward the bottom. Most lineages of the Geometridae have lost this A5 proleg completely, so this is very useful for identification. Fast-moving, arboreal caterpillars tend to have reduced numbers of prolegs. The standard in Lepidoptera is 5 pairs. #caterpillar #geometridae #inchworm #moth #lepidoptera #insects #nature #prolegs #evolution #nature

  9. what does this one mimic? most in this group just fake a head on the wrong side. but this one seems to model some other animal. Evenus regalis (Eumaeini, Lycaenidae) #lepidoptera www.inaturalist.org/observations...

  14. #MothOfTheDay is a small bundle known as

    TOADFLAX BROCADE
    Calophasia lunula

Local to southeast and parts of central UK, often more numerous near shingle beaches, its larvae feed on toadflax.

  15. #MothOfTheDay - the other day, I had the chunky Great Prominent. Today, the smaller, woodchip cousin called

    PALE PROMINENT
    Pterostoma palpina

It was on the clematis bark stem and very blended in until my eagle eye spotted him. Very common and larvae feed on sallows
