  4. Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon), summer form, seen recently along the Pierce Road, Harvard Forest. This would be the second brood, hatched from eggs laid by the spring form in April and May. The earlier spring form has larger, variable blotchy dark markings on the underside of the wings.

    See tinyurl.com/yjwj2azb.

They bask holding their wings perpendicular to the sun's rays so that they can warm up.

  5. Weaver's fritillary (Boloria dia). This small nymphalid butterfly favours dry grasslands and roadsides, where its caterpillars feed mainly on violets. Adults fly in several generations from spring to early autumn.

  6. #MothOfTheDay from two nights ago is a bit of an oxymoron - a rather chunky moth called

    THE DELICATE
    Mythimna vitellina

A migrant species and suspected episodic resident largely confined to southern counties in August through to October.

  7. Likely an Essex skipper (Thymelicus lineola), though possibly another species from the same genus - a butterfly from the Hesperiidae family.

  8. #MothOfTheDay is one largely confined to the coastal regions of southern and eastern England but does seem to be expanding:

    CLANCY'S RUSTIC
    Caradrina kadenii

Named after Sean Clancy who first discovered it in Kent in 2002.
