A much tougher call is this small orange beastie with beautiful metallic green eyes, seen all too briefly before it flew away.
Pretty sure it's a braconid family wasp (🇩🇪 Brackwespen), but they're extremely numerous, & I'm struggling to get to sub-family level, let alone genus or species 😱

Made a late visit to the garden this evening, as it was getting dark & chilly.
Still spotted a couple of interesting new species, including this yellow cereal fly (Opomyza florum; 🇩🇪 Gelbe Getreidefliege).
Needed help from an expert on iNat, as the abdomen is a darker than for normal specimens 👍

Update on this ichneumonid wasp.
Thanks to expert feedback on iNat, it's very likely in genus Coplognathus, probably C celerator.
Rarely reported, it has only 8 & 7 observations in DE on iNat & GBIF, respectively.
C divisus is very similar in appearance, but has 0 & 0 observations in DE.

Worst of all when it comes to ambiguity is this ichneumonid wasp.
iNaturalist won't go deeper than Tribe Phaeogenini with any confidence, leaving a vast space to cover to get a better ID 🙄
Then again, there are bazillions of ichneumonids, many uncatalogued, so it might even be a new species 🤷♂️

Dying ornamental oregano. With a macro lense, the fading flower looks like some kind of insect almost. And the "veins" on the leaves really pop out.

This is obviously a whitefly in subfamily Aleyrodinae, but being more specific than that is hard – I wasn't able to get pictures from any other angles before it pinged away.

And while this stripey-eyed fly is likely in genus Calliopum, part of the Lauxaniid family, it could be either C aeneum or C simillimum.
But this ambiguity may be resolvable by looking at whether the tarsi of the middle-legs have black hairs: I'm hoping for expert iNat help on that 🤞

A frustrating afternoon in the garden today – plenty of arthropods, but uncertainty on some species.
This is an aphid in genus Anoecia & very likely A corni, the common dogwood-grass aphid (🇩🇪 Hartriegel-Blattlaus). But it's not possible to rule out the rare A major or A vagans from these pix alone.

Catching up, I photographed this little beast a couple of days ago.
Pretty sure it's a sow-thistle fly aka the least picture fly (Ensina sonchi), in the fruit fly family.
Widespread across Europe, but underreported: just 7 & 12 prior observations in DE on iNaturalist & GBIF, respectively.
