А resurrection experiment reveals reduced adaptive potential in a common agricultural weed | Evolution Letters
According to a study by scientists from the University of Michigan, instead of prioritizing adaptation to climate change, some species, such as morning glories, are forced to develop traits aimed at attracting insects, even if this compromises their survival in the face of rising temperatures.
In a relatively short period of time, the rate of adaptation in the morning glory population decreased by 96%. The scientists discovered that the slowdown in adaptation is due to a conflict between two beneficial traits: increasing flower size to attract rare, increasingly scarce pollinators, and earlier flowering to adapt to changes in temperature and precipitation.
In the studied populations, these traits became tightly interrelated, with selection for larger flowers taking precedence over climate adaptation.
Despite significant genetic diversity, the plants are reaching a kind of evolutionary impasse. Due to declining insect populations caused by deforestation and the widespread use of pesticides in agriculture, morning glories are devoting resources to attracting pollinators, losing their ability to respond to warming.
