The North Dakota Bestiary: If you see a flash of reddish-orange followed by a cheerful whistle and sound of a whip crack, you just barely bore witness to the fastest songbird on earth, the Peregrine Robin.

Also known as the Early Bird of Prey, it is the bane of every earthworm in North Dakota, as well as suburbanites with nice landscaping because of the craters they leave in yards from their Mach 1 dives.

An intelligent bird, they have learned not to use their normal hunting habits on sidewalk worms after a heavy rain. Their fledglings are hilariously awkward and surprisingly durable as they learn to fly. If you’ve ever heard a bullet ricochet off a rock, it might’ve actually been a fledgling.

Peregrine Robins are primarily vermivorous, but insects, small rodents and fast food are also hunted with aplomb and a high success rate.

The North Dakota Bestiary: Once known as the percolated badger, this perennially bad-tempered mammal unique to North Dakota is now better known as the caffeinated badger after expanding its brewing methods.

Accounts vary, but it’s generally agreed upon not to approach before, during or after they have their morning coffee. In other words, do not approach. Seriously. Give this one a wide berth, as it’s a nasty piece of work. No other badger outbadgers this badger.

It’s still a mystery where caffeinated badgers get their coffee beans, but we hope it’s from a local roaster.

The North Dakota Bestiary: Thanks to its unique clime, North Dakota is home to a variety of ground squirrel found nowhere else. Once thought to be a hybrid of the native 13-lined ground squirrel and the invasive banded ground squirrel, the plaid ground squirrel is now considered a separate species with a stabilized population in the western part of the state.

It’s omnivorous and opportunistic, but takes a special delight in devouring as many pumpkin-spice grasshoppers as it can find at the end of summer and early fall in preparation for winter. It spends its long hibernation deep in its cozy burrow decorated with at least one “Chai. Chirp. Ciao.” framed sign or throw pillow.
