The North Dakota Bestiary: Thanks to its unique clime, North Dakota is home to a variety of ground squirrel found nowhere else. Once thought to be a hybrid of the native 13-lined ground squirrel and the invasive banded ground squirrel, the plaid ground squirrel is now considered a separate species with a stabilized population in the western part of the state.

It’s omnivorous and opportunistic, but takes a special delight in devouring as many pumpkin-spice grasshoppers as it can find at the end of summer and early fall in preparation for winter. It spends its long hibernation deep in its cozy burrow decorated with at least one “Chai. Chirp. Ciao.” framed sign or throw pillow.

The North Dakota Bestiary: As any North Dakotan can tell you, fictional depictions of buffalo wings are a bit off. True buffalo wings are not like those of a feathered bird or run-of-the-mill pegasus; rather, they have long and strong modified bones that support a leathery skin membrane used for flying. In other words, it’s a mammal.

Remarkably, the majestic North Dakota bat-winged bison retains the four legs of a quadrupedal animal, similar to a European/western dragon. This is an example of convergent evolution, so while they aren’t able to breathe fire like a dragon, these ruminants do share rudimentary echolocation abilities with their bat cousins. (Note: the jury is still out on whether or not regular bison use echolocation.)

So the next time you hear something big crashing through the roof of your home or office, don’t worry! It’s just a BWB.

PS: Yes, we know the difference between a buffalo and a bison, but we have chosen as a state to not get worked up about it. Relax.
