  1. OK, this is as far as i go. I'll take another crack at it when I've learned more about color and light.

  4. 💡 Did you know: Ostriches can sprint at speeds over 40 mph, using powerful legs for both running and delivering kicks strong enough to deter predators. Their long necks and sharp eyesight help them spot danger from far across the savanna.

  5. @FathomPublishing I think it's worth noting that ~200 million years ago was a warm, tropical to subtropical monsoonal region with intense wet and dry seasons, widespread rivers and lakes, and lush conifer–fern vegetation. Think less “Sonoran Desert” and more humid seasonal with big floods and big droughts.

  6. Do mixed-species groups travel as one? Although plains zebras are well known to form mixed-species groups in savanna ecosystems, the extent that they travel with others remains unknown. Dejeante et al. investigate in an NHM now available ahead of print!

  8. Tree hidey-holes key to helping slow declines of small mammals
    phys.org/news/2024-06-tree-hid

Nestbox use indicates declining arboreal #mammals in an Australian savanna may be limited by tree hollow availability sciencedirect.com/science/arti

"to slow declines and stop extinctions of hollow-using #animals in northern #Australia, protecting large #savanna #eucalypts as ecosystem assets would be critical"

  9. #Amazon nears 'tipping point' where #rainforest could transform into #savanna

The Amazon may be nearing a "tipping point."

    By Nicoletta Lanese
    published March 8, 2022

"The new study adds to existing evidence that the world's largest rainforest is hurtling toward a tipping point, beyond which large swaths of the forest could suddenly die off. The study cannot pinpoint when this tipping point might be reached, but the forest could hit it within decades, the study authors told Inside Climate News."

  10. GOOD EVENING! Savanna Lion enjoying her pile of leaves
Animal Facts: The lionesses work together to hunt and help rear the cubs. This allows them to get the most from their hard work, keeping them healthier and safer. Being smaller and lighter than males, lionesses are more agile and faster. During hunting, smaller females chase the prey toward the center of the hunting group.

    The authors [1] conclude

    - "After the #dieback of the #rainforest, the soil moisture approaches an #alternative #equilibrium consistent with the reduced #precipitation and #evapotranspiration of the #savanna vegetation"

    - "At the #CriticalPoint, the atmospheric moisture content does not suffice anymore to maintain precipitation and, thus, latent heating rates that could switch the system back into the annual wet season, resulting in a permanent dry season state"

  16. I’m preparing a conference talk based on a recent publication (see below!). It’s a lot of work, because I have to start from scratch, so I would be sad to present it just once. Are you interested in #TheoreticalEcology and
#EcologicalModelling in general and/or #BushEncroachment of #savanna systems in particular? Then please get in touch! I would be happy to give a virtual seminar!

  17. #PokemonGOfriends

Hi everyone, I’m looking for new #pokemonGo friends.

I’m in uk (Garden Vivillion). I’d love to stay friends until best!

    I really need new friends from #IcySnow, #Meadow, #Ocean, #Sandstorm, #Savanna, and #Sun regions.

Reply or dm for my code. #Pokemon

  18. Interesting paper suggesting that #European #broadleaved #forests originated from #fire-driven #savannas; the prevalence of #resprouting species is a legacy; shade-tolerance & winter-deciduous are #exaptations
doi.org/10.1111/brv.12923 Biol. Rev. by Adie & Lawes

i.e. forests are an alternative state (doi.org/10.1016/j.tplants.2019)

Note that many South American forests were also savannas, (doi.org/10.1038/s41467-021-277)

    Food for thought!

  19. I've just moved here from aus.social to be with my spatial peeps, so another #introduction is in order.

I'm a #fullstack #remotesensing #scientist working across #optical #sar and #lidar domains. With a background in #rangeland and #savanna #ecology, I build biophysical models using empirical and #machinelearning methods to get information back to the government, NGOs and the public.

Now getting more interested in applying #spatialscience to #systemsthinking for tackling #wickedproblems.

  20. Introduction: I am an evolutionary ecologist working on (among other things) how mating systems affect #adaptation to changing environments. I like #beetles, #sexualselection, #savanna and #tropicalforest environments and #rstats and am trying to use #julialang with some variance in success. I also #scuba dive using a #jjccr #rebreather, enjoy #triathlon and do mediocre #wildlifephotography. I am moving to the University of Hull in December 2022.
