  1. In The Field – Ep. 74

This time around, we bring you what might be called disastrous advice. But it’s all for the best, really.

  2. Archival Log: DELTA-005. Our design philosophy centers on phenomena that resist categorization. Entities like the Tsukikago Servitors provide enough cues to recognize a pattern but never enough to deduce motive. By aiming for "fragmented understanding," we force the mind to seek logic in inscrutable systems. This shifts focus from explanation to the horror of implication—an existential dread born of systems operating by their own alien rules. #HorrorDesign #Incomprehensible #TTRPG #InTheField

  4. Purple hyacinth orchid (Dipodium punctatum) at Mystery Bay, NSW. Only one plant out and only just starting to flower in late February near the ocean. I usually see this species flowering nearby from late November - this is probably the latest flowering I have seen (although it can apparently flower into March at some locations).

  6. In The Field – Ep. 69

Off-Grid, In The Field is a series of mini OGP episodes with just one host and The General. This time, we’re finding our way as best we can, and looking at all the shiny colours and lights.

  7. Large duck orchid (Caleana major) and sun orchid with spots (Thelymitra ixioides / Thelymitra juncifolia) near Karbeethong, East Gippsland, VIC.

Only made it down to East Gippsland on three mornings this spring / early-summer but still managed to see a good range of the regular locals (plus a couple of interesting new ones!)

  9. Microtis parviflora (slender onion orchid) growing amongst the sun orchids at the back of the house - Corunna, NSW.

Grows here alongside Microtis unifolia (common onion orchid) which has shorter flowering stems with more crowded flowers at this location.

  11. A few more late-flowering sun orchids with spots (Thelymitra ixioides / Thelymitra juncifolia) variations near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Only plants in part shade on the edge of the forest were still flowering in early November at this location - usually in slightly damper soils than the adjacent open grassland.

  13. Rosy hyacinth orchid (Dipodium roseum) still flowering at Christmas at Corunna, NSW.

Only a few small scattered plants out this year at home with almost no meaningful spring rainfall and a dry start to summer. But quite a few larger flowering stems still out on the side of the road between Tilba and Narooma.

  15. Late-flowering sun orchids with spots (Thelymitra ixioides / Thelymitra juncifolia) variations near Karbeethong, East Gippsland, VIC.

Quite a few different variations still in flower here in more shaded spots with protection from harsh afternoon sun when more exposed plants have all finished.

  17. It's been another poor year for the hyacinth orchids (Dipodium) at home in Corunna, NSW - with most of the small patch of Dipodium variegatum not making it to flower at all after a very dry spring.

However in recent weeks several new short flower spikes have emerged much later than usual - although those that have started to flower only only have two or three flowers at most.

So good to see some new plants in new locations - hopefully there will be more large spikes of flowers next season if it rains a bit more in spring and early summer.

  19. Sun orchids (Thelymitra) growing close together in open grassland west of Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Sun orchids with spots (T. ixioides / T. juncifolia) growing alongside T. carnea and several different species in the T. pauciflora group can lead to some beautiful hybrids including T. x irregularis (top right).

  21. Late flowering sun orchids with spots (Thelymitra ixioides / Thelymitra juncifolia) west of Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Not sure if slightly different lobes on these plants are just a result of aging - or something different. Only saw one plant like this on the last trip.

  23. Interesting form of Thelymitra × irregularis (crested sun orchid) near Karbeethong, East Gippsland, VIC.

Only one roadside plant out at this location with fewer spots and richer colours than other nearby populations.I haven't seen this beautiful natural hybrid here before.

  24. Black-hooded sun orchid (Thelymitra atronitida) near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC. This uncommon species tends to be very shy to flower - usually only see one or two flowers open briefly on warm/humid mornings. A nice patch of plants at this location but only one flower open - and this closed up as I photographed it just before noon.

  25. Microtis unifolia (common onion orchid) growing amongst the sun orchids at the back of the house, Corunna, NSW. Flowers are very small - standard Aussie fly included for scale.

Grows here alongside a more robust form of M. parviflora (slender onion orchid) which has longer flowering stems with less crowded flowers.

  26. Crested sun orchid - Thelymitra × irregularis - west of Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Slightly different form of this beautiful naturally occurring hybrid (thought to be a cross between T. ixioides x T. carnea) compared to plants growing further west near Genoa. As with several other populations I saw this spring there were only a couple of plants out at this location.

  27. Double ducks west of Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC. Didn't see a lot of large duck orchids (Caleana major) on my couple of brief East Gippsland trips this year but did see scattered plants in full flight at a couple of locations.

  28. Telopea mongaensis (Monga waratah) in Monga National Park, Monga, NSW ... #Monga ;)

I really like this waratah as a garden plant but rarely see it available in nurseries. It is used in some modern hybrids to give the 'classic' NSW waratah (T. speciosissima) a bit more cold tolerance with a compact/bushy habit.
