#Beetles of the genus #Callistethus (#Rutelinae, #Scarabaeidae) are mainly distributed across the #tropics and #subtropics of #Asia, as well as Central and South #America. Ming-Zhi Zhao (2026) described four #newspecies within the #Callistethus #auronitens species complex, assigned two species to the genus Callistethus, and elevated two subspecies to full species status. #Biodiversity

📰 Dam Removals Spark Massive Alewife Comeback
🌎 Maine: After decades of decline, migrating alewife populations have rebounded from under 800 fish to more than 9 million thanks to sustained dam removal and river‑restoration efforts.
🐟 With seals, otters, bald eagles, ospreys, pollock, trout and other carnivores feeding on large populations, communities now celebrate annual alewife festivals, highlighting how ecological restoration can revive cultural traditions and local economies.

Wherever we look, insect numbers are declining, but most insect life on Earth is found in locations we are not actively monitoring. Justin Crocker discusses the #insect decline and how can we build the planetary observatory that #biodiversity requires @PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4qzS2yv

📰 Offshore Oil Exploration Blocked on South Africa’s Wild Coast
⚖️ In a landmark ruling, South Africa’s Constitutional Court struck down Shell’s exploration rights. This is a major win for coastal communities who fought for years to protect their waters, livelihoods, and cultural heritage.
🌊 The judges affirmed that 'meaningful consultation' isn’t a box‑checking exercise but a matter of dignity, recognizing communities’ constitutional rights and the ecological importance of the Wild Coast’s rich marine life.
💪 Local fishers and advocacy groups say the decision strengthens community power in environmental governance and sets a precedent for future cases across the region.

@greenyouthmovement Well, yes, of course.
I manage #biodiverse meadows and woodland; I live off grid; I haven't flown since 2009 and don't have a car; I am a trustee of a #ClimateChange charity, for which I'm currently working on a #Biodiversity paper; I'm active in #LandReform.

Trees are beautiful, and powerful allies in the fight against climate change. They act as massive carbon "sponges". Yet we are destroying our tropical forests at an alarming rate.
We can do many things to help save our tropical forests:
(A) cut down our beef consumption, and (B) ensure we don’t eat products containing palm oil. Please talk to others about this. My wife's blog gives more ideas on the subject.

Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because it has a large, stable population and a very wide geographic range across Africa and Asia.

Across India, efforts to restore native grasslands are helping wildlife recover while supporting local communities that depend on these landscapes. Protecting grasslands is about more than preserving open spaces—it’s about safeguarding biodiversity, livelihoods, and resilient ecosystems.

🍎🌾 Why do apples respond differently to climate change than wheat? A TUM study shows that crop yields depend not only on temperature and drought, but also on pollinator dependence. Climate adaptation and pollinator conservation must go hand in hand. 🐝 #ClimateChange #Biodiversity

Native forests, roads and fires
The last remaining roadless intact old-growth forests in America
Trump administration to rescind rule protecting old-growth forests"Almost 45m acres of national forests could be potentially opened to road construction, drilling and logging."
“...The roadless rule has always allowed for targeted actions to reduce hazardous fuels. What it does not allow is using wildfire as an excuse to open some of America’s most intact public forests to industrial exploitation and new road construction. The administration’s attempt to blame the roadless rule for worsening wildfire risk ignores both the facts and the rule itself. Roads generally lead to more ignitions and result in more wildfires – not fewer."
“Once you start bulldozing roads for commercial logging and industrial development, there’s no getting them back.” >>
