The first rule of their campus BioBlitz? Put your phone away.

Before documenting a single species, students at Azim Premji University were asked simply to slow down and notice. Then they got to work: 436 trees · 25 species · 44 snake sightings · 263 observations logged in two days.

Which tree near you do you actually know by name?

  15. As millions of Americans head outside for camping trips, hiking, and backyard BBQs, billions of ticks are already waiting in the grass, ready to bite. Not only are their numbers growing, but today's ticks are more likely to carry Lyme disease bacteria and other dangerous pathogens. Is the tick and tick-borne disease situation similar globally?

  25. I decided to bike to MNSA, Oceanside to do some birding today. I arrived past the morning prime-time and low tide, and it was pretty business as usual, meaning the expected seasonal crew, plus the permanent residents. I'm always happy to see Saltmarsh Sparrows, my iconic climate crisis hero birds. They seem to be in abundance, there, although that speaks more to habitat loss elsewhere, rather than resurgence. At least they are breeding at MNSA. On the way back, on a hunch, I stopped by Willow Pond, a small freshwater body across the street from a salt-water channel in Hewlett. Sure enough, I encountered my first Green Heron of the season.
