Basic bee facts every day at 3pm.

Bumblebees store small amounts of regurgitated nectar to feed larvae and for emergencies in wax ‘honey pots’ in the nest.
The wax to create these honey pots is released from between the segments of the abdomen.

The illegal wildlife trade
"A Victorian man has been fined $10,000 after more than 700 dead animals, including emus and echidnas, were found at his home and antiques business last year."
"Seventy-eight emus, 42 brushtail possums and 26 echidnas were found, as well as the remains of threatened species, including the barking owl, diamond python and Murray River short-necked turtle."
"Penalty 'doesn't send a message. Last year the government released its response to an independent review of the Wildlife Act, introducing higher maximum penalties and new offences for wildlife crimes." >>

We see 2 species of geckos in Tucson—native Western Banded Geckos & non-native Mediterranean House Geckos. Since I like to feature native species in my Perpetual Journal, here’s my PJ art of a Western Banded Gecko! Read more on my latest blog post https://paulaborchardt.substack.com/p/a-cute-little-gecko

🧬 NEW: A #Paris region sighting of a #bumblebee-like insect not seen in #France for 150 years points to a larger problem in #biodiversity #science.
Researchers say most #species have not been formally described, and many known species have not been properly assessed. New databases, #DNA tools, and citizen observations help, but gaps in reference #data still limit what scientists can confirm.

First flowers are out for another season on the patch of sun orchids (Thelymitra sp. - somewhere in the T. pauciflora / T. peniculata mix) just behind my house at Corunna, NSW.
This population suffered a little from unusual mowing and extra foot traffic this year resulting from the installation of a new roof on the house - but there's still a good scattering of flowering stems now up and a range of blue and pink flowers now out (if only very briefly!) on warmer days.

In 2022, I helped push through the international agreement to protect biodiversity. Wars and economic pressures can make nature seem like a ‘nice-to-have’. But it is a critical asset, and Cop17 must deliver real action

**Yellow-rumped Thornbills** (*Acanthiza chrysorrhoa) *at Lightning Ridge, NSW. Numerous small birds visible feeding on the upper branches of the trees scattered through Lorne station - Weebills, mainly, but also these Thornbills. Difficult to photograph as they are so fast-moving, but I managed to grab these shots.

Scientists and investors are restoring 23 square miles of North Carolina peatland by blocking old drainage ditches and replanting native habitat. If monitoring confirms the gains, the project could cut emissions, store water, reduce fire risk, and help wildlife corridors.
