  1. Intro to #iNaturalist Webinar - #MaineAudubon

    Date: May 12 2026
    Time: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

"iNaturalist has quickly become one of the largest community science databases, being used from a variety of projects globally and right here in #Maine. Join Maine Audubon’s Senior Naturalist, Doug Hitchcox, for a webinar to learn about iNaturalist, from how it works to how you can contribute. He’ll also highlight some current projects that you can join.

"Maine Audubon strives to provide inclusive and accessible programs for all members of the community. If you require accommodations to participate in this program, please email [email protected]. Maine Audubon can best meet the needs of requests submitted at least seven days before the event start date."

  2. #PortlandME - #WarblerWalks at Evergreen Cemetery

    Free, no registration required.

    May 4-8 & May 11-15, 7-9 am
672 Stevens Ave, Portland, ME 04103

"Join Maine Audubon’s Staff Naturalist Doug Hitchcox, for free bird walks at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland during the peak of warbler migration. These walks will take place each weekday (Monday through Friday) from the 4th through the 15th.

Meet at the south end of the duck ponds (map) and we’ll spend two hours (7-9 am) birding along the paths and trails of Evergreen. Come out for a morning of watching some of North America’s most beautiful birds as they stop to feed in this city-surrounded oasis, before moving on to their breeding grounds.

Most days we only walk ~0.4 miles and stay on the dirt road and trails. Conditions vary based on recent weather, but trails can be quite muddy after rain and some places can have exposed roots to step over. There is a public restroom (vault toilet; no running water) nearby. Accessible by Greater Portland Metro Bus 9A/B. We will have loaner binoculars available.

  5. #MaineAudubon Webinar - #Serviceberry

    Wednesday May 6, 5:30-7 pm
    Led by Andrew Tufts

Free program, donations encouraged. Registration required.

"Serviceberry marks a key seasonal transition in Maine, blooming as migratory #birds and #pollinators arrive. This webinar examines serviceberry’s role in forest edges, open woodlands, and rocky landscapes, and how these ecologically rich habitats support #biodiversity. Participants will also learn how edge communities translate into parks, trails, and residential landscapes.

Natural Communities & Seasonal Change is a three-part spring learning series that combines monthly webinars with guided field experiences to explore #Maine’s #NativePlant communities through the lens of seasonal #phenology. The series focuses on how #NativeTrees and shrubs signal ecological change, support #wildlife, and shape both natural and human landscapes. Participants will build skills in observation, #PlantIdentification, and reading the landscape as spring unfolds."

  6. #WestbrookME - Marsh and Stream Explorers Field Training in Westbrook

    April 25 from 9:30 am-12 pm

Location: #MillBrookPreserve, Presumpscot Regional Land Trust, Westbrook

    Free, registration required.

"Curious about what critters live in your local streams and freshwater marshes? Come join #MaineAudubon and #MaineDEP for a fun morning of catching and identifying #macroinvertebrates at Mill Brook Preserve! Get hands-on training and learn how you can contribute to an important community science project that acts as a screening tool for Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) water quality assessments. Be prepared to wade into shallow water as you net and handle macroinvertebrates!

"Marsh and Stream Explorers is a water quality monitoring project that trains volunteers to survey streams and freshwater marshes for large #AquaticInsects (macroinvertebrates) which are sensitive to environmental stressors and can be indicators of #wetland health. After this training session, you’ll have the tools to choose and survey your own stream or freshwater marsh and contribute invaluable data to Maine’s water quality monitoring efforts. If you’re interested in getting outdoors, learning something new, and protecting your local #watershed, this community science project is for you!

"We will meet at the parking area for the Northern Trailhead and go on a short walk from there. Wear clothes and shoes you’re comfortable walking in and potentially getting wet, waders or muckboots are encouraged and some may be provided."

  11. #Webinar - #Marsh and #Stream Explorers: A Treasure Hunt to Find Healthy Freshwater #Habitats in #Maine

    Apr 22 2026
    7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

"Curious about what critters live in your local streams and freshwater marshes? Come learn about Maine Marsh and Stream Explorers, a collaborative #CommunityScience project between #MaineAudubon and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (#MEDEP). This program trains volunteers to survey for #macroinvertebrates, or large #AquaticInsects, in streams and freshwater #marshes statewide. With many macroinvertebrates sensitive to temperature, #pollutants, and other environmental stressors, their presence or absence serve as an important indicator of overall wetland health. This data then becomes an invaluable screening tool for #MaineDEP to prioritize where more-indepth water quality assessments should be conducted.

"In this webinar you’ll learn about what the Marsh and Stream Explorers project has accomplished and its impact on water quality monitoring statewide. We’ll look at our overall results, share our successes, and talk about future goals of the project. If you’re interested in getting outdoors, learning something new, and protecting your local watershed, this community science project is for you! Come learn more about how you can get involved. In-person field training for survey techniques to follow."

  21. So, #MaineAudubon is no longer putting together #NatureBackpacks for #NatureExploration . However, they were kind enough to share their printed resources as PDFs as well as the lists of items for the different kits (Birding, Insects, Plants, etc) with me. I'll be sharing those resources for the next #SolarPunkSunday (converting the PDFs to JPGs for posting), as well as #ToyLibraries and other kid-related stuff. Then the week after that, I'll be posting about upcoming #EarthDay2026 events! Follow the #SolarPunkSunday hashtag for those topics and much, much more...!

  36. #FalmouthME - #GilslandFarm #BirdWalk

    Thursday, Feb 26 2026
    8:00 am - 10:00 am

"Join us for a weekly bird walk at Gilsland Farm, led by #MaineAudubon’s Staff Naturalist #DougHitchcox and others. Meet in the parking lot, in front of the Visitor Center, where we’ll begin a slow walk around the property to look and listen for birds using Gilsland’s diverse habitats. Free, no registration required.

The walk typically covers between 1 to 2 miles (1.5 – 3 km). Waterproof shoes are recommended as the paths can be damp with dew in the mornings and icy when frozen. Please bring your binoculars, but we do have extra pairs if you need them, just ask Doug when you arrive.

Maine Audubon strives to provide inclusive and accessible programs for all members of the community. If you require accommodations to participate in this program, please email [email protected]. Maine Audubon can best meet the needs of requests submitted at least seven days before the event start date."
