View Online: #LibraryOfThings – A Critical Component of #Libraries as Access Points to a #Local, #Resilient, and #SustainableFuture
16 March 2026
"The recording of #20 in #IFLA’s #Environment, #Sustainability and Libraries Section’s webinar series is now available below via YouTube and the slides are available on SlideShare.
Libraries lending beyond books exist all over the world but beyond that, libraries can be a disaster resource center, they can lend tools and items to try out before making an investment, they can offer events on how to #repair items—along with the tools required to do so. They serve as places where intergenerational groups connect over yard games and art activities. #LibrariesOfThings provide access to a wide range of items from gear for adventures to essential wellbeing tools. This webinar will share how to plug into this rapidly growing and increasingly connected system of Libraries of Things, both inside and outside the traditional library world, and discover how they can help you meet your goals.
About the Speaker:
#HazelOnsrud is a public librarian at #CurtisMemorialLibrary, who works on community programming and collection development, including an extensive library of things focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. She serves on the international Library of Things Mutual Aid Group, the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and the Steering Team of MECollab. She enjoys collaborating with good humans around the globe and was named a 2024 Library Journal Mover and Shaker and a 2025 New York Times Changemaker. Prior to her work as public librarian, Hazel co-founded the #MaineToolLibrary and spent a bunch of time learning from graceful teachers. In her free time, she likes to create things, eat molés and design #Gardens. Free Day at #MaineStateParks for #LibraryCard Holders on April 25, 2026
April 14, 2026
Augusta, Maine - "April 19-25, 2026 is #NationalLibraryWeek, and thanks to a proclamation by Governor #JanetMills, it is also officially #MaineLibraryMonth. To mark the occasion, the #MaineStateLibrary and Maine State Parks are partnering to offer a special day of free admission to participating state parks.
"On Saturday, April 25, simply show your Maine library card at the entrance of any participating Maine state park and enjoy a day outdoors at no cost.
" 'This collaboration is a perfect way to highlight the value of libraries and the exceptional outdoor values of Maine's State Parks,' said Andy Cutko, #MaineDACF Bureau of Parks and Lands Director. 'Libraries open your mind to the world of literature, and on April 25, your library card is also a ticket to the #outdoors.'
" 'Maine State Library is delighted to partner with Maine State Parks for Maine Library Month,' said Lori Stockman, Maine State Librarian. 'With spring upon us, providing free admission to many Maine State Parks on April 25th is a natural extension of the types of services and resources that our public libraries provide regularly to their communities.'
"Visitors are encouraged to bring a favorite book, find a shady spot, and enjoy some quiet reading time surrounded by Maines natural beauty. Whether it's a novel at #CrescentBeachStatePark, poetry under a pine at #LamoineStatePark, or a field guide on a trail atop #BradburyMountainStatePark, the day is a celebration of learning, relaxation, and connection.
"Don't have a library card yet? Stop by your local library to sign up - its free, and it opens the door to countless opportunities, from books and digital resources to programs and events.
Find your nearest library. To explore Maine State Parks, including maps and locations, visit parksandlands.com.
"Free admission applies to day-use at Maine's Maine State Parks and Historic Sites on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 a.m. until closing.
"The free admission does not apply to:
Acadia National Park
Allagash Wilderness Waterway
Baxter State Park
Maine Wildlife Park
Peacock Beach
Scarborough Beach
Swan Island
Penobscot River Corridor
Penobscot Narrows Observatory in Prospect"Source:

Bath, 04530"Share, Care for and Repair Your Items We host a number of swaps to help you share your unused or gently used consumable items. Look for our quarterly plant swap, weekly hardware swap, and weekly art supply swap on our calendar. We do not accept certain items like old paint that need to be disposed of elsewhere. Instead, learn where to recycle them with the #recyclopedia, and next time you buy do so with thought to the end of life of your product. We also do not accept large amounts of quality items; those are better to give to Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill or other local schools and nonprofits. Care for items you want to keep with our repair cafes and repair kits in our library of things.
What is a Repair Café? A Repair Cafe is a community-based initiative designed to encourage people to repair broken or damaged items rather than discarding them. These events are typically hosted in libraries, community centers, or local spaces and bring together skilled volunteers (repair experts) and community members who need help fixing everyday items. What is the goal of a Repair Cafe? The goal of a Repair Café is to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and foster a sense of community by encouraging people to repair, reuse, and learn new skills.
We can help with:
Electronics & computers
Clothing and leather goods
Small appliances & lamps
Wooden furniture

#RockportME #BookSale - #RockportPublicLibrary
March 28 @ 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
"Like the daffodils and tulips, the first Friends of the Rockport Public Library Book Sale of the year is a beloved harbinger of spring. This year’s event will be held in the Rockport Library’s lower level on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"As always, tables will be filled with extraordinary deals on thousands of books, #CDs, #DVDs, #puzzles, and #audiobooks. Planning to buy a lot? Join the Friends of the Rockport Public Library for $20 and receive a purple tote to fill up with books at no additional charge. Refill the tote at book sales in June and September for only $10. If you already bought your tote in December, don’t forget to bring it back for your $10 refill.
"The Friends will have an especially large selection of puzzles, DVDs, and audiobooks at this sale, thanks to generous donations. Spring is also a great time to stock up on #GardeningBooks and #Crafting books (graduation and wedding season is just around the corner — time to make something special).
"All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Rockport Public Library. Only cash and checks are able to be accepted."
