  1. I've just realised the beautiful Pleiades, Taurus and Orion summer constellations I saw in the pre-dawn sky wasn't a dream ☺️

The Moon will reach apogee (farthest from Earth) at 9h UT (now) on 22 August. At this time the Moon's distance from Earth will be 404,642 km or 251,433 miles and it will span an angular size of 29.5 arc-minutes. 🔭

  3. On a rooftop balcony watching the stars. Still found the north star without online search 💪

You can simply extend the line between the last two stars of the big dipper/big bear around 5-6x and you land on the north star.

And yes, the north star really shows you where north (roughly) is on the northern hemisphere.

  4. The - more or less - final version of the main picture i made on my journey to Sahagún, Spain.

The full story will be on my blog ASTROCAMP.EU soon.

  5. went to a dark skies site at midnight with kiddo and wifey to see the milky way 🌌 in #Yorkshire

it wasn't quite as spectacular as I expected but even at midnight it was quite bright still on the horizon.

but even with the naked eye there were a significant number more stars then back home where I can only really see about 5 stars in any direction and 1 was probably a helicopter

this photo was taken with the #astrophotography on my pixel phone.

  6. An astronomer on what it’s really like to stargaze for a living.

  7. A few impressions from yesterday evening and last night. We stayed out in a field far from the villages until almost midnight and saw some bright shooting stars. A perfectly successful evening and a really nice family event with a picnic!

(The photos were all taken with my smartphone. The eclipse glasses came with a small filter card to hold in front of the lens. It worked surprisingly well!)

  10. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌠🔭 During the annual #Perseid #meteorshower, streaks of #light flash across the dark night #sky.

Astronomers explain that these #shootingstars occur when #Earth moves through the icy debris left by #comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Clear skies and a moonless night will make the glowing fireballs visible between midnight and dawn.
