  1. Last weekend we were talking about the Space Mirror Reflect Orbital wants to put in orbit. And we suddenly remembered that the Donald Duck comic books we grew up with had a story where Dagobert Duck (Scrooge McDuck) shoots a mirror into space to light up his factories to make more money, that ends up getting hijacked and turned into a laser by the comic books recurring bad guys. From 1989

  3. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌠🔭 During the annual #Perseid #meteorshower, streaks of #light flash across the dark night #sky.

Astronomers explain that these #shootingstars occur when #Earth moves through the icy debris left by #comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Clear skies and a moonless night will make the glowing fireballs visible between midnight and dawn.

  5. IC2574: Coddington's (not-)Nebula

It's like galaxy season all in one

Discovered by Edwin Coddington in 1898, IC2574 not a nebula but a dwarf spiral galaxy, an outlying member of the M81 group nearly 4Mpc away in Ursa Major - and, unexpectedly, about 90% of its mass is in the form of dark matter.

Prints, cards and more are available via the website: shiny.photo/photo/IC2574--Codd

  7. @sundogplanets

My first perspective shattering night sky was as a young teenager driving with my dad from Adelaide to Sydney.

We stopped in the middle of the Hay Plain and I'll never forget that WOW feeling, stars so bright horizon to horizon

  9. How many of us have been — or, perhaps wish we had been — up on a peak like this under the most ancient and primordial sky that fired the imagination of an ancestor and, as if calling out to their spirits out there somewhere, asked a "Question to the Stars"...

    Painting by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach.

  11. The Moon Takes the Bow: The Longest Fight in the Sky, Scored on Love, Fear, Respect, and Attention

Two fighters have been circling each other since before anyone kept records, and the purse has never changed hands: the human gaze. In one corner burns a furnace so vast that something like a million Earths could rattle around inside it, the engine behind every green leaf and every heartbeat on this planet. In the other corner floats a charcoal-colored rock, airless and dead, throwing back about twelve percent of the light that hits it. On paper the match is a slaughter. In practice the rock has been taking rounds for ten thousand years, and the strangest fact on the whole card is a matter of scheduling, since only one of these two shows up for both shifts. […]

  13. Something’s coming. I just hope it’s not going to be so bad that it causes sewer overflow. I’m supposed to go to the beach tomorrow, but torrental rain makes the quality of the water at my beach shitty. Literally.

  16. Another night at the Bandelier campsite with the rented Sigma 20mm. I framed up through the pines, one bright star anchoring the top. No Milky Way, no moon… just a deep, quiet starfield and the black shapes of the trees.

  18. The Milky Way at Charleville, Western Queensland, taken on my iPhone 16, so not the best! It is such an amazing sight that we miss in urban environments! No satellites streaks thankfully!

  20. Might want to revisit this piece sometime...one of my earlier paintings, but it looks *fine*...at the risk of tooting my own horn.

By yours truly, the pinwheel-spiral-galaxy version of "Tree Climber's Moon".

Among the star trails of the urban sky, the camera recorded two fleeting phenomena. The brighter one appears consistent with a fireball—that is, an exceptionally bright meteor—while the second seems to be a fainter meteor.
Captured with my Xiaomi Pad 6 tablet using DeepSkyCamera.
