August 14th/15th - I set up a camera as usual, not sure if the cloud will clear or stay clear tonight. I screwed up the focussing on this one but, it shows the ridiculous number of satellites we already have along with an Aurora on the horizon.

This treasure trove is available to all and contains stars, galaxies, supernovae, gravitational lenses, and much more. Two NSF NOIRLab facilities contributed data to the map: the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Mayall telescope and the NSF Blanco telescope, equipped with the U.S. Department of Energy-fabricated DECam. …

We were watching the Perseid meteor shower.
First there were moths...until the outside light switched off & the sensor got taped.
Next there were the planes going into the nearest airport in another county & higher planes going further.
With patience, whoosh, a smattering of feint meteors.
Tens, maybe hundreds of non-geostationary satallites. A massive increase since we last did this.

A few impressions from yesterday evening and last night. We stayed out in a field far from the villages until almost midnight and saw some bright shooting stars. A perfectly successful evening and a really nice family event with a picnic!
(The photos were all taken with my smartphone. The eclipse glasses came with a small filter card to hold in front of the lens. It worked surprisingly well!)

Last weekend we were talking about the Space Mirror Reflect Orbital wants to put in orbit. And we suddenly remembered that the Donald Duck comic books we grew up with had a story where Dagobert Duck (Scrooge McDuck) shoots a mirror into space to light up his factories to make more money, that ends up getting hijacked and turned into a laser by the comic books recurring bad guys. IC2574: Coddington's (not-)Nebula
It's like galaxy season all in one
Discovered by Edwin Coddington in 1898, IC2574 not a nebula but a dwarf spiral galaxy, an outlying member of the M81 group nearly 4Mpc away in Ursa Major - and, unexpectedly, about 90% of its mass is in the form of dark matter.
