  1. I like to carry a bag of small game pieces around with me. Here's what I've got on me right now!

    There's some unfolded
zedges, my custom made backgammon bandana, some reusable silicone muffin wrappers, a deck of high-contrast cards, a smaller cloth bag full of dice, and a plastic bag with some blank dry-erase cards, markers, and those little plastic standee clips.

The dice are 12mm by the way, so they're a little smaller than the 16mm dice that come standard in D&D sets. Sometimes people ask me "why no d20?" and the answer is just that I never use it! If I'm playing a d20-based game I'm usually bringing a totally different bag to that game with character sheets and stuff.

I made the backgammon bandana myself. It's got a chessboard on the back, but I'm thinking of re-making this and replacing that with a ludo board. If I were to make more of these and sell them, would you prefer one over the other?

The games I'm most excited to play with this kit are

    - The Gang (uses cards and numbered tokens, dice should work as substitute)
    - Wedge Zendo (uses zedges and black/white tokens, again using dice)
    - Homeworlds (using zedges and hidden role cards, playing cards will work for this)
    - Codenames (bit of a stretch but I think I could make this work using the dry-erase cards and some sort of word-picking app on my phone)
    - Backgammon (I did dedicate a whole bandana just to this game!)
    - Oh Hell (of all the trick-taking games, this one seems to do the best with an odd number of players, which comes up a lot)

Can you think of something else you might be want to play with this kit? Let me know!

  2. "If you’re doing something complicated, you have to think about how the reader is taking it in. Is this clear to the reader? Is the reader going to want to read the next paragraph? Where is the momentum?"

The Idea That Isn’t a Story Yet

A world is not a story — a premise is closer to one. On why A Perfectly Useless War changed shape completely, why the other book didn't need to, and how to tell which kind of idea you're actually holding.

  4. @weaving @fiberarts

Throw blankets are all finished! Whew! I felt like the finishing process took longer than the weaving (it didn’t, but it felt that way.) Twisting fringe, fixing broken threads, wet finishing, brushing, trimming fringe, steaming... It was a lot!

The thick colored yarn I had for ages and I needed a project to use it up. It’s wool, but other than that I don’t know much about it. The thinner yarn is Harrisville Shetland.

  5. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐱⚔️ Twin sisters Rebecca and Ruth Brown make thousands of hand-sculpted clay #cat soldiers that reenact #CivilWar battles at their #Gettysburg-based Civil War Tails Diorama #Museum.

Each cat represents one real soldier in accurate scale, and the #dioramas cover moments from #FortSumter to Pickett’s Charge. What started as a childhood #hobby grew into a one-to-one, historically detailed collection.

  6. This fabric costs £150/m, but almost nobody's left to make it

"Traditional silk ribbon weaving is officially critically endangered in the UK, and I got a private tour of Whitchurch Silk Mill, the oldest silk weaver still working in its original 1815 building. I met Leonie, the only apprentice in the entire country, watched 100-year-old looms in action, and left with my assumptions about fabric completely upended.

In this video: what it actually means for a craft to be endangered, the Heritage Crafts red list (including vanishing paintings and special brooms), behind-the-scenes of historic silk production in action, and an honest conversation about whether beauty alone can save a craft."

  9. The bush artisan saving craftmanship one stockwhip at a time
    By Aimee Mitchell

RM William's once told Bill Webb, "You make better belts than I do", but few Australians know of the master leather worker or his quest to keep bushcraft alive.
