Some of the strangest English legends concern screaming skulls. Usually seen as belonging to former residents of a house, they emit horrifying screams if anyone tries to remove them or if anything unusual happens. One skull from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, screamed to announce the births and illnesses of farm animals and family deaths. Some robbers once stole it, but returned it after being tortured by its incessant shrieks. When a railway was being built across the house's land, the skull would allegedly undo all progress after work finished for the day. The skull was eventually appeased by an interview with the chief engineer, who promised it free passage over the line forever. In St Mary the Virgin's Church, Woodford, Northamptonshire, a preserved human heart was discovered in a pillar during restoration work. Some suspect it belonged to a monk, whose ghost has been sighted in the church. One woman saw the 'monk' approach the altar, kneel and pray. Another saw the apparition drift down the aisle towards her before it vanished at the spot where the heart was found. Two holidaymakers in the 1960s took a photo of the interior of the church and, upon developing the film, were surprised to see a robed figure at the altar. A copy of the photo hangs in the church, along with a framed newspaper clipping about the incident. The Northern Line ticket hall in Bank Tube Station was once the notoriously overcrowded crypt of St Mary Woolnoth's Church, which was cleared of bodies and reinforced when the station was built. Passengers often feel a sense of desolation and some have smelt putrid odours wafting through the tunnels. One ghost sometimes glimpsed in and around the station is the 'Black Nun', a woman whose brother worked at the nearby Bank of England and was executed for forging a cheque. St Mary Woolnoth was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, a mysterious figure known as the 'Devil's Architect' for embellishing his buildings with 'pagan' adornments like pyramids and obelisks. In 'The Wasteland', T.S.
