Newcastle Keep has several ghosts, but perhaps the most unusual is that of a Spanish cavalier who walks across the Great Hall and is only visible from the waist down. Other spooks include a mischievous flower girl who haunts the stairs and Roman soldiers. It is said that circling the huge oak tree growing inside the ruined church at East Somerton, Norfolk [three times widdershins] will summon the ghost of a witch reputedly buried inside the church. The oak tree is said to have sprouted from the witch's wooden leg!

Long after the educated elite stopped believing in witchcraft, such ideas seem to have lingered on among ordinary people, especially in rural areas. In the village of Goathland, on the North Yorkshire Moors, when an old man died in 1926, a bullock's heart pierced with pins was found in his chimney. The ghostly black coach of Caister Castle, #Norfolk, was an omen of death for the Paston family. It had a headless driver and Marc Alexander describes it as 'a huge old vehicle, rather like a hearse'. It would pass through the locked gates, 'hurtle round the courtyard' and then vanish.

@warksfolklore.bsky.social has been highlighting phantom coaches, so I thought I might mention a couple from elsewhere. At Hatfield House, #Hertfordshire, a ghostly coach was said to not only charge up the drive but then barge into the house itself, where it would rattle up the stairs!

The pretty village of Linton, in Yorkshire, has a most unusual ghost. Legend says that during the Civil War, a Royalist horseman was entrusted with an important letter to deliver. The rider was, however, intercepted by a party of Parliamentarians who decapitated him. Despite missing his head, the rider was somehow able to continue and he delivered his message into the hands of Linton's curate before expiring. The curate, though, may have been a Cromwellian agent, a suspicion that seems to have led the horseman's headless ghost to frequently re-enact his dramatic ride. At Neath Abbey, South #Wales, one of my fellow Ghost Monks is said to have betrayed King Edward II to his enemies - needless to say, we immediately cancelled him. #Folklore states the King's spirit returns to the abbey in search of the monk, whose own #ghost hides whenever he's about!

Christina Hole told of a #ghost cat who haunted an old lady's house in #Hampshire. It would potter about and lie in front of the fire just like a living animal, but the lady insisted it was 'quite impalpable'. She thought it might be the spirit of her mother because it walked like her!

Mortsafes in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh. These iron cages were placed around freshly dug graves to deter body snatchers, who sought to disinter bodies to sell to medical schools. After a few weeks, when the corpse had decayed sufficiently to no longer interest the resurrection men, the mortsafe was removed.
