  1. Freeze warning means making one final bouquet and enjoying the finally blooming cosmos one last time. Also harvesting the last of the basil and freezing it in pucks, and tucking in the rhubarb and hollyhocks for the winter. The house smells like a basil bomb went off. The aggressive hardware cloth around the cosmos and zinnias is to keep mice and bunnies out, otherwise theyll mow them.

  2. #MothOfTheDay sounds like a Scotsman's medical complaint ... but is actually a rather nice, neat greyscale bark mimic species:

    BLAIR'S SHOULDER-KNOT
    Lithophane leautieri

A recent colonist whose larvae favour cypress trees, it is now fairly widespread in the UK.

  3. last colour of the year in the garden. most of the land around us is already pretty bare for leaves. our little micro climate seems to hold on a little longer ..sigh,

it will be six months or so until we see vigorous growth and leaves on trees again. a quietly fading world preparing for the new life to come.

  4. Bees still need food in the fall. Wild asters bloom prolifically and support pollinators when most flowering plants are going to seed.

Symphyotrichum racemosum, small white aster; Bombus impatiens, eastern bumblee
