  1. A lovely orange visitor. We see gulf fritillaries in late summer and early autumn - they're native here. I really should plant some passionflowers for them to lay their eggs on.

  2. #MothOfTheDay - at last the #autumn moths arrive (technically 8 days before the start, but who cares?)

    SALLOW
    Cirrhia icteritia

A nice lemon yellow version here, though is much differentiation in markings between specimens, some with more pinky-brown blotchings. Status: common

  9. The Cabbage White Butterfly: Trying to Understand Something Ordinary

The Cabbage White Butterfly: Trying to Understand Something Ordinary I remember the first time I deliberately tried to identify a butterfly. I was maybe seven or eight, sitting in my relatives's garden, and this white butterfly kept landing on the vegetables. My relative said it was a cabbage white butterfly, and I remember asking her why it was called that. She said something like "because it's white and it eats cabbage," which seemed to answer the question completely at the […]

  14. Went back to Palomar Mountain State Park to to what shakes up there for #butterflies in September and to check out lower Doane Valley, which I haven’t seen before. There was a large orange fast flyer that caught me so off guard I forgot to turn my camera on. I think it was a Fritillary of some kind. Otherwise not unusual but nice to see stuff.

  15. Slim pickings last night. Summer moths gone and Autumn moths yet to pick up for me. Lots of Large Yellow Underwings, but #MothOfTheDay is a:
