  1. A drive-through town for speeding road trains

Elsewhere large road trains are also racing through the middle of the small town's main street. It might not be 800 heavy haulage trucks rolling through, but the main street life is suffering.

"We're talking about loads that are going through the centre of town and nearly touching parked cars on either side of the road…Often we might have to halt a conversation with a customer because a truck is going past and they're really noisy, or we see a truck slam on the brakes as they come up to the crosswalk. It's an issue with noise, it's an issue with crossing the road." >>

  7. The British newspaper The Guardian is running a story about how "US datacenter discharged large amounts of pollution for almost a year with no permits".

It starts of with one important and infuriating detail:

"DataOne, the Microsoft-linked New Jersey datacenter recently hit with a $1m fine for running unpermitted generators, emitted large amounts of health-harming air pollution for nearly a year before state regulators stepped in"

    theguardian.com/environment/20

The American "hyperscalers" are wasting somewhere between $680 and $750 _billion_ on data centers this year alone. A $1 million fine is barely a rounding error. It's nothing. It makes absolutely no difference what so ever.

This is the kind of fine that makes big tech CEOs say "Don't worry about getting any permits or the environment, the worst that can happen is that we get some fine so small we won't even notice".

  13. '5 reasons why Alberta’s bitumen pipeline through BC is not in the national interest':

    1. 'There is no true Canadian "autonomy, resilience and security" without food and water security, both of which would be put at risk by a new tar sands oil pipeline'.

    2. 'The private sector has stayed away from backing the project, so the financial burdens will now be borne primarily by taxpayers [which] suggests that the private sector continues to view Alberta’s proposal as financially unviable.'

    3. 'The west coast oil pipeline and tankers proposal does not have a high likelihood of successful execution due to the financial, legal, economic and political risks. It will likely face significant, costly and protracted legal battles.'

  16. On the recent court decision rejecting EPA's risk management rule for methylene chloride:

    acsh.org/news/2026/10/01/methy

The court's finding that "unreasonable risk" is a legal, not technical, term has wide-ranging regulatory implications, and is potentially troubling. Technical interpretations can be questionable, though: I have seen remediation mandated when the human health risk of remediation is orders of magnitude higher than for the no-action alternative.
