#EPA proposal could leave the public in the dark on #datacenter plans
By MATTHEW DALY
Updated 1:37 PM EDT, September 3, 2026WASHINGTON (AP) — "A plan by the Environmental Protection Agency could make it harder for the public to learn about and comment on proposed AI data centers that have sparked backlash in communities across the United States and transformed the midterm election landscape.
"The EPA proposal would eliminate a federal requirement that states notify the public and seek comment before issuing #AirPollution permits for data centers and other #IndustrialFacilities. States could still offer opportunities for public comment, but the EPA would no longer mandate them as a condition for states to grant permits.
"Critics say the move could thwart local residents from learning about proposed data centers or making their voices heard before projects are approved and construction begins. The move comes during a widespread backlash as #TechGiants build hundreds of massive #ServerWarehouses to fuel #ArtificialIntelligence and #CloudComputing.
" 'By eliminating the long-standing federal requirement for public notice, this proposal continues efforts by the Trump administration to turn its back on the fundamental EPA principle of transparency,' said Mike Koerber, a former deputy director of EPA’s air quality office.
"If made final, the plan could create 'an unlevel playing field where citizens in one state are kept completely in the dark about new data centers and heavy industrial emissions in their backyards, while neighboring states maintain oversight,' he said.
"Under the EPA plan, states with weak or no requirements for #PublicComment could speed permits for data centers, #PowerPlants and other #PollutionSources without consulting the public or even informing communities where the facilities are located, Koerber and other critics said."

There are serious life-shortening consequences of breathing polluted air
by Dr Karine Nohr
A British landmark study of over 3,400 London children aged between 6 and 9 years old measured the impact of air quality improvement following the introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and found that reduced emissions are strongly associated with accelerated lung growth in children. Just published by one of the global leading medical journals, the ‘Lancet Public Health’ , the ‘CHILL’ study is one that all of us, everywhere, need to understand.
The study measured the health of children’s lungs living in areas that would subsequently become low-emission traffic zones and then re-measured annually for 5 years after the introduction of ULEZ.
Prior to the study, children living in these traffic areas had reduced lung size and reduced lung function.
Key findings of the study were that after the introduction of ULEZ, London children not only had reversed stunting of the growth of their lungs, with many of them coming back up to the normal size expected for their lungs, but they also had increased lung capacity. The proportion of London children suffering from clinically impaired lung capacity had dropped significantly.
This is such an important finding for protecting the health of our children.
This study provides strong evidence that traffic-related air pollution is a serious risk factor for lung disease and early death and behoves us all to take the impact of our use of fossil fuels very seriously, driving being the most significant contributant of air pollution.
Despite controversy, Sheffield Councillors introduced a CAZ in 2023, and pollution levels have dropped sharply.
Dr Laura-Jane Smith, a London consultant in Respiratory Medicine, sees patients every day in her clinics who are fighting for their breath. She said that her adult patients who live in the ULEZ area are also reporting that they are breathing better and they are having fewer flare-ups that could see them end up in hospital.
Now there is clear proof of how much harm is done to the lungs by vehicle use. So should we all start asking ourselves, ‘How essential is it for me to make this journey by car?’
The argument that has been used by some car drivers that any driving restrictions are ‘infringements of their rights’ must be weighed against infringement of the right of the rest of us, particularly children, but also adults, the right to breathe clean air, and the serious life-shortening consequences of breathing polluted air.

#Maine - New testing identifies elevated #benzene emissions near #SouthPortland tank farms
“You might have been able to do this in the past, but we’re not going to let you do this in the future.”
by Norah Hogan, 4/14/2026
Excerpt: "Long-term exposure to benzene has been linked to dizziness, headaches, blood disorders and cancer.
"Reiner, who has lived near three of the sites for years, was diagnosed with bladder cancer last Thanksgiving. He underwent surgery in December and is now receiving treatment.
" 'The big question is, was it this exposure? You can’t say. But this exposure may have contributed,' he said. 'The more toxins and environmental hazards you encounter in your life, it all adds up. It’s the cumulative effect.'
"Concerns about emissions have persisted for years. Previously, oil companies were allowed to self-monitor their emissions and were subject to stricter regulations only if they reported elevated toxin levels.
"In 2019, #GlobalCompanies LLC entered into a legal settlement that required the installation of new technology to reduce emissions. The company’s benzene levels are now well below state thresholds.
" 'They don’t want to be forced to do something that would be the right thing for everybody,' Reiner said. 'Everybody in America could benefit if oil companies started cleaning their emissions before they leave the tank farms and facilities.' "

@greenpeace I think the car emission control in Czech Republic in the EU must be utterly corrupt, because every time I walk next to a city arterial road with a lot of cars I choke on the horrible exhaust stench. While in Cambodia, which is a world champion in corruption, a developing 3rd world dictatorship, where I doubt they even have emission control, I routinely rode a motorbike in similarly dense traffic in similar size arterial roads and I never noticed any stench, with exception of some broken diesel trucks which were billowing similar thick black smoke like in your picture and they were stinking unbearably, so I had to slow down to get rid of them, but the rest of the traffic was not stinking at all unlike in Czech Republic, EU, where just passenger cars stink unbearably.
So I think the Czech emission control is just a counter-productive overcomplicated bureaucracy which just bullies ordinary citizens and has exactly the opposite effect as claimed.
I feel
s t r o n g c o n t e m p t
towards the Czech regime when I have a comparative international experience like this.

Delhi Pollution: Mopping Floor With Tap Open!
It is noticeable that no authority wants to tackle the powerful automobile or construction lobbies, both of whom deny major responsibility and point fingers elsewhere.
