  6. 2023: #Environmentalists and #NativeAmerican tribe rebuke #SpaceX ahead of historic rocket launch

Opponents of the project say owner #ElonMusk’s space travel aspirations are not worth the risk of a catastrophic explosion.

    by Cameron Langford / April 19, 2023

"SpaceX launched a rocket with 33 engines, the most powerful ever built, Thursday morning from its South #Texas port and hailed the test flight as a success, though the rocket and an attached space capsule exploded just four minutes after liftoff.

"The company said in a best-case scenario it would be a 90-minute maiden voyage into space and its first-stage #SuperHeavy rocket would separate from its second-stage #Starship spacecraft about three minutes into the flight, and do a controlled descent into the Gulf of Mexico. And Starship would travel around the globe and land off the coast of Hawaii.

"But with SpaceX livestreaming the event the components failed to separate and the vehicle flipped over before exploding.

"Musk, who also owns Twitter, praised his employees’ work on the project in a Twitter post: 'Congrats @SpaceX team on an exciting test launch of Starship! Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months.'

"Environmental and #CivilRights groups condemned SpaceX’s endeavor in statements Wednesday afternoon, saying they feared an explosion would destroy #EndangeredSpecies’ habitat in a nearby wildlife refuge and that rocket shrapnel could injure area residents.

"But there were no immediate reports of environmental damage or injuries Thursday morning after the explosion.

"Since Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, it has become the world’s premier commercial space business, launching its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets more than 220 times, making history as the first private firm to send astronauts to the International Space Station and delivering cargo to the International Space Station more than 20 times with its Dragon spacecraft.

Aborted launches and explosions are commonplace for the company as it refines its technology, including a 2019 test flight from its '#Spaceport' in #BocaChica — an unincorporated and sparsely populated village in Cameron County outside #BrownsvilleTX — that started a 100-acre brush fire in the Lower #RioGrandeValley #NationalWildlifeRefuge."

  16. #Wikipedia - Origin of the concept of a #SacrificeZone

"According to the United Nations Human Rights Council [#UNHRC], the term Sacrifice zone emerged in the #ColdWar period when #NuclearTesting, conducted by #colonial powers, such as the #UnitedStates, #France, the #UnitedKingdom, and the #SovietUnion transformed sections of land into #uninhabitable and highly #radioactive areas. Sacrifice zones can be defined as communities that experience dangerous levels of hazardous contamination and waste exposure. Sacrifice zones are linked to #racism, #oppression, #patriarchy, and #colonialism, as they are hubs of #pollution that disproportionately target and harm the physical and mental health of marginalized groups who face overlapping forms of #oppressions.

According to Helen Huntington Smith, the term was first used in the U.S. discussing the long-term effects of #StripMining #coal in the American West in the 1970s. The National Academy of Sciences/National Academy of Engineering Study Committee on the Potential for Rehabilitating Lands Surface Mined for Coal in the Western United States produced a 1973 report that introduced the term, finding:

In each zone the probability of rehabilitating an area depends upon the land use objectives, the characteristics of the site, the technology available, and the skill with which this technology is applied. At the extremes, if surface mined lands are declared national sacrifice areas, all ecological zones have a high probability of being successfully rehabilitated. If, however, complete restoration is the objective, rehabilitation in each zone has no probability of success.

Similarly in 1975, Genevieve Atwood wrote in Scientific American:

Surface mining without #reclamation removes the land forever from #productive use; such land can best be classified as a #NationalSacrifice area. With successful reclamation, however, surface mining can become just one of a series of land uses that merely interrupt a current use and then return the land to an equivalent potential productivity or an even higher one.

Huntington Smith wrote in 1975, "The Panel that issued the cautious and scholarly National Academy of Sciences report unwittingly touched off a verbal bombshell" with the phrase National Sacrifice Area; "The words exploded in the Western press overnight. Seized upon by a people who felt themselves being served up as 'national sacrifices', they became a watchword and a rallying cry." The term sparked public debate, including among #environmentalists and politicians such as future Colorado governor Richard Lamm.

The term continued to be used in the context of strip mining until at least 1999: '#WestVirginia has become an environmental sacrifice zone'."

  17. ‘It is not a Sunday in the countryside that we need, but a less artificial life.’
—Bernard Charbonneau, in « Le sentiment de la nature, une force révolutionnaire », 1937

It is our disconnection from nature that gives rise to the feeling that we lack something, that an essential part of our existence is missing.

  18. Who was Bernard Charbonneau? 🧶

Bernard Charbonneau was raised in the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. He obtained his agrégation in 1935.

In 1945, he decided not to pursue an academic career and, ‘eager to live in the countryside, he obtained a position at a small teacher training college in the Pyrenean foothills, in Lescar, France, where he remained until his retirement’. (written by Daniel Cérézuelle, in ‘Ecology and Freedom: Bernard Charbonneau: Pioneer of Political Ecology’, Lyon, Parangon/Vs, coll. ‘après-développement’, 2006)

He viewed technical progress as the source of ever-increasing organisation, and therefore greater conformity, hence less freedom. He was a close friend of Jacques Ellul for six decades.

  19. Humanity's Chance to Reverse #AmazonRainforest's Slide Toward #TippingPoint Is 'Shrinking'

The world's largest #rainforest showed "ominous indicators," including #wildfires and #ExtremeDrought, in 2024.

The Amazon, sometimes called the '#LungsOfThePlanet,' this year showed signs of further inching toward a much-feared tipping point, threatening the very existence of the world's largest rainforest.

"Rampant wildfires and extreme drought ravaged large parts of the Amazon in 2024. The fires and dry conditions were fueled by deforestation and the El Niño weather pattern, and also made worse by climate change, according to the World Economic Forum. 'The number of fires reached its highest level in 14 years this September,' the group reported in October.

"#Drought has also impacted the #AmazonRiver, causing one of the river's main tributaries to drop to its lowest level ever recorded, according to October reporting from The Associated Press. The drop in the river has negatively impacted local economies and #FoodSupplies.

"Andrew Miller, advocacy director at #AmazonWatch, told the AP last week that the fires and droughts experienced across the Amazon in 2024 'could be ominous indicators that we are reaching the long-feared ecological tipping point.'

"'Humanity's window of opportunity to reverse this trend is shrinking, but still open,' he said.

"The Amazon plays a vital role in keeping the planet healthy. 150-200 billion tons of carbon are stored in the Amazon, and it also carries 20% of the earth's fresh water to sea.

"According to the World Economic Forum, if the Amazon tipping point is reached, 'it will release billions of tonnes of #CO2 into the atmosphere through fires and plants dying off. This would further exacerbate climate change and make the 1.5°C goal impossible to achieve. It would also alter weather patterns, which would impact agricultural productivity and global food supplies.'

"A paper published in the journal Nature in February indicates that up to half of the rainforest could hit a tipping point by the middle of the century. 'We estimate that by 2050, 10% to 47% of Amazonian forests will be exposed to compounding disturbances that may trigger unexpected ecosystem transitions and potentially exacerbate regional #ClimateChange,' explained the researchers behind the paper.

"However, it wasn't all bad news out of the Amazon in 2024. According to the AP, the amount of #deforestation in #Brazil and #Colombia declined in this year. In Brazil, which houses the largest chunk of the Amazon, forest loss dropped 30.6% compared to the year prior, bringing it to the lowest level of destruction in nearly a decade.

"The improvement is an about-face from a couple of years ago, when the country registered 15-year high of deforestation during the leadership of former #FarRight President #JairBolsonaro. Brazil is now led by the left-wing President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva, who—despite presiding over this drop in deforestation—has also come under scrutiny, as AP noted, by #environmentalists for backing projects that they argue could harm the environment."

  21. *We have a similar longtime movement in #BritishColumbia for same government approved aerial herbicide toxic spraying issue #StopTheSprayBC *

#FirstNations and #environmentalists have denounced the practice of aerial #herbicide spraying on #forestlands for decades. This year, #Indigenous groups in Northern #Ontario have announced a ban on blanket herbicide use, while in #NovaScotia, residents have resorted to peaceful #DirectAction to enforce their own ban.

The #ForestIndustry routinely dumps tons of chemicals like #glyphosate, the main ingredient in #Roundup weedkiller, on logged areas to kill off naturally-regenerated trees and shrubs in favour of commercial #TreeFarms. The problem is, these herbicides are #lethal to frogs, lizards, and salamanders. They wipe out #MedicinalPlants and berry bushes that Indigenous people and #wildlife rely on. Glyphosate, a suspected #carcinogen, #contaminates #rivers and #groundwater far and wide through indiscriminate spraying.

  22. My friend, Jane, from Lake Cowichan, was the first senior citizen activist who was arrested in 2021, at Fairy Creek Blockades. She messaged before heading out to meet up with me at HQ camp. She told me she's never been arrested for protesting anything before but due to seeing too much ecocide still happening in her golden years - declared, 'Getting arrested for protecting Mother Nature is now on my bucket list"🌲💦 💗🦅🌲🦉🌲 Jane stayed at HQ camp for 2 nights & on her 3rd day, headed out to chain herself/walker to a tripod hardblock. Jane was arrested, along with 12 others that day, after several hours. Jane is a wonderful human being, a musician, a fibers artist, a Mother & Grandmother, who loves nature very much.
