Group says Michigan is at the cusp of achieving gender parity with women in elected office • Michigan Advance
Michigan ranks third in the country for the state with the best gender parity for women in elected office, according to rankings from RepresentWomen, a non-profit organization tracking gender representation in elected office in the U.S.
With a 49.5 out of 100 score, Michigan is at the edge of gender parity. The two states that outrank Michigan, Wisconsin and Maine, have achieved gender parity with Wisconsin scoring 51.8 and Maine scoring 54.1 this year.
Michigan has never strayed far from the top ten states since RepresentWomen began compiling its annual Gender Parity Index in 2013, but since the 2018 election when women were elected to lead all three of Michigan’s statewide executive offices, the state has been inching towards parity.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s second ever female governor, often speaks on workforce and educational opportunities for women in the state, embracing a “wear pink, get sh*t done” mentality to femininity in politics.
Last summer when the “Barbie” movie was coming out, Whitmer’s office came out with an unofficial “Governor Barbie” calling for empowerment for children and women to seek out their dream jobs and roles.
“Together, we work to create spaces and structures that empower women to show up as they are and allow them [to] lead from the front,” Whitmer posted on “X” in July of 2023.

With a split government, Governor #Gretchen #Whitmer has used her veto power since 2019
to protect♦️ voting rights, quality K-12 education, and reproductive rights. ♦️In 2022, Governor Whitmer will share the ballot with critical state House and Senate races that will make it possible for Democrats to win control of the legislature.
The ballot will also have several crucial U.S. House races for Democrats to maintain the majority.

Every year, some of the richest and most powerful leaders in business, media and politics touch down in Sun Valley, Idaho,
for a private confab hosted by New York investment bank Allen & Company. The vibe is trail-dad chic — think puffy Patagonia vests and Apple watches and stealth-wealth cashmere pullovers. Imagine the resort from Dirty Dancing but replace all the beautiful young dancers with mostly older White men carrying Wall Street Journals under their arms and grumbling about regulatory overreach.
The summit’s agenda and lecture topics are kept secret, and reporters who attend generally have to stay off the record so that the one-percenters can mingle and speak freely as they wander the mountain resort,
gossiping about industry and, occasionally, forging historic multibillion-dollar deals.Sun Valley is widely believed to be the place where Jeff #Bezos decided to buy The Washington Post, and the site of the meet-cute between Comcast and NBC Universal.
(Warren #Buffett, who is notably absent from this year’s guest list, once referred to Sun Valley dealmaking as ABWA, or “acquisitions by walking around.”)This year’s parade of private jets is expected to touch down Tuesday, as the Idaho Mountain Express reported last month, bringing together dozens of power brokers
— including AI kingpin Sam #Altman; Disney CEO Bob #Iger and a coterie of his potential successors; plus all of the usual suspects like Apple’s Tim #Cook, Meta’s Mark #Zuckerberg, Google’s Sundar #Pichai, media moguls Rupert #Murdoch and #Oprah Winfrey and many others, including David #Zaslav, the CEO of CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, according to Bloomberg and Variety.
(A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed Zaslav would attend.)There are also some notably absent names from the guest list this year.
There’s Buffett, who is normally a fixture at the event but who is nearly 94 and, perhaps, happy to let his spryer successor, 62-year-old Greg #Abel, handle the high-altitude trekking and chit-chattery. Less likely but still half-seriously rumored is that Buffett is avoiding the shindig after the press last year picked up on his wife, Astrid, complaining about having to pay $4 for a cup of coffee.
Also absent this year is Elon #Musk, who might seem like a shoo-in until you imagine him winding up on a rafting trip with a bunch of CEOs whom he publicly urged,
less than a year ago, to go f— themselves. While we expect plenty of chatter about artificial intelligence, the Succession-level drama about Iger’s succession plan, and the head-spinning negotiations that led to the Paramount-Skydance merger, there is one giant elephant — or donkey — in the room this year.
Questions about President Joe #Biden’s ability to campaign have wealthy donors and Democratic officials in a tizzy.
And it would be hard to imagine that a gaggle of elite media moguls would sit around the fire with their s’mores and bourbon and not speculate about potential replacements on the 2024 ballot. That could make the week particularly important for three governors on the guest list this year: Gretchen #Whitmer, Josh #Shapiro and Wes #Moore, all of whom have been floated as potential Biden replacements, even as the president forcefully denies that he’s contemplating dropping out.
The political intrigue is, well, intriguing. But it’s also a timely reminder to zoom out and consider just how powerful the US has let its billionaire class become, and how events like Sun Valley amplify the inequities in America that are so systemic we hardly bat an eye at them.
As the writer Hamilton Nolan wrote in 2021, Sun Valley is a place where “the billionaires are feted by the mere millionaires; the millionaires drum up enough deals to allow them to buy their third and fourth homes …
This is the wondrous model of American capitalism in action
— a tiny handful of wealthy people eat cake, and an entire nation gathers downstream, hoping to snatch up a few falling crumbs.”https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/09/business/sun-valley-summer-camp-billionaires-nightcap/index.html

The Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference has been held annually, the week after July 4, for decades.
Employees at the nearby Friedman Memorial Airport reportedly refer to the conference as “the annual fly-in event”while others jokingly call it “summer camp for billionaires.”
Most of the week’s agenda is secret and the reporters present are told to stay off-the-record,
but it is rumored that Sun Valley was the origin of several high profile mergers and Jeff Bezos’ decision to buy the Washington Post.Among the names reportedly present at this year’s conference are Disney CEO Bob #Iger, Paramount Chair Shari #Redstone, and OpenAI CEO Sam #Altman.
Several prominent politicians, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen #Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh #Shapiro, and Maryland Gov. Wes #Moore also scored invites to the event, according to Variety.
It’s challenging to determine the exact number of private planes flying into the Idaho airport, due to recent changes in Federal Aviation Administration policy that allow for jet owners to conceal their flight data from tracking websites.
Still, the flight-tracking website FlightAware shows more than a hundred non-concealed flights landing in Sun Valley.

Dropping names — #Whitmer! #Shapiro! #Warnock! — like a groupie backstage at a heavy-metal concert, floating wildly implausible scenarios, stretching so hard for historical analogies that several probably blew out a hamstring, America’s pundit class managed to achieve a level of groupthink that surpassed the brainwashers of The Manchurian Candidate.

"#Michigan Gov. Gretchen #Whitmer is set to sign a package of bills that would transition the state to 100 percent #CleanElectricity by 2040. The bills include robust provisions for workers & are among the most ambitious efforts undertaken by any state to move toward a carbon-free future in a manner that is actively good for working people. Significantly, Democrats are testing this approach in a swing state in the heart of the industrial Midwest."

Senate Dems introduce prescription drug oversight board bills following governor’s speech
Senate Democrats on Tuesday introduced another tool to combat high drug prices, seeking to fulfill another one of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fall priorities.
State Sens. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-Bay City) and Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe) put forth a package of bills — Senate Bills 483, 484 and 485 — to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board, an independent body that will set upper payment limits on prescription drug costs.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called for the creation of this board in her “What’s Next” address, citing recommendations from the state’s Prescription Drug Task Force established in 2020.
“Let’s further lower the cost of prescription drugs by implementing the task force’s remaining recommendations, like establishing an independent, nonpartisan prescription drug affordability board.” Whitmer said in the speech.
“We need to hold bad actors across the supply chain accountable for skyrocketing prices, while also encouraging [research and development] for new treatments and cures made right here in Michigan,” she said.

Michigan still allows emergency takeovers of local governments. Is it finally time to reconsider?
In Detroit, the past was all too present. Houses, businesses and schools that once supported nearly 2 million people sat vacant. Old debts forced city leaders into impossible choices. There was not enough money for public safety, not enough for streetlights, not enough for parks, not enough for education — not enough, period.
In March 2013, an attorney named Kevyn Orr was appointed to take charge. He’d never received a vote and had never been vetted by the mayor or City Council. And yet, he assumed all the power that otherwise would be held by the mayor and council, as well as additional powers, such as the ability to unilaterally sell city assets. While local officials could attempt to veto certain decisions, the veto itself was subject to state approval.
Four months later, with the governor’s signoff, Orr led Detroit into the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Orr had this authority because of Michigan’s expansive system for intervening in distressed cities and schools. His appointment by state officials as Detroit’s emergency manager intensified a debate about power and democracy that continues to this day.
In Michigan, the state has an unusual amount of discretion in initiating oversight, and its emergency managers have an unusual amount of authority, according to researchers. Compared with those of other states, Michigan’s takeover powers have also been among the most widely used. Since 2000, under various versions of the law, 10 Michigan municipalities have come under the control of at least one emergency manager. So did several public school districts, including Detroit’s.
The results were mixed and showed a clear trend, some studies found, toward intervening in majority-Black towns. One recent study found that the race and economic status of residents and the city’s reliance on state revenue were better predictors of a municipal takeover than financial distress indicators.
By 2017, 56% of Michigan’s Black residents had lived in cities governed by emergency managers or other state oversight measures, according to a widely cited lawsuit filed in federal court by a coalition of community leaders against Michigan’s governor and treasurer. Just under 3% of white people had the same experience, the complaint said. (The suit, which sought to overturn the law based on equal protection and voting rights, was later dismissed.)

Remember the plot to kidnap and murder Michigan Gov. Gretchen #Whitmer (D) in 2020? The “highest-profile #DomesticTerrorism case in recent years”?
The judge sentenced co-leader #AdamFox, 39 today (27 Dec): Fox faces 16 years in prison. Prosecutors had asked for life.
What do you think about that sentence? Too lenient/too harsh? If the threat of punishment isn’t a deterrent (it’s not), how do we determine appropriate severity?
