  17. Trump’s threats over Greenland draw warnings and profanities at global forum – AP News

Newsom told European leaders to stand up to Trump’s tariff threats over support of Greenland, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. (AP video shot by Kostya Manenkov)

    World News

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — There were grave warnings from European leaders and expletives from California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday as leaders at the World Economic Forum grappled with the Greenland crisis and heightened concerns over global trade.

The gathering in Davos, Switzerland, comes as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to push for the seizure of Greenland and the imposition of related trade tariffs.

French President Emmanuel Macron, wearing aviator sunglasses because of an eye infection, warned of a “new colonial approach” that would undermine decades of collaboration.

Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister and former central banker, urged countries below the top tier of global power to continue multilateral cooperation with a new, “dense web of connections.”

In their words: Trump’s threats over Greenland draw warnings and profanities at global forum

And in the forum’s entrance hall, Newsom was the most blunt, telling European leaders: “It’s time to get serious and stop being complicit. It’s time to stand tall and firm – have a backbone.”

Here’s a look at what attendees said:

    Gavin Newsom

“I can’t take this complicity. People rolling over. I should’ve brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders,” the California governor and prominent Democrat said. “I hope people understand how pathetic they look on the world stage. I mean, at least from an American perspective, it’s embarrassing.” He added: “Diplomacy with Donald Trump? He’s a T-Rex. You mate with him or he devours you. One or the other … Wake up! Where the hell has everybody been? Stop with this (expletive) diplomacy of sort of niceties and somehow we’re all going to figure it out, saying one thing privately and another publicly. Have some spine, some goddamn (expletive).”

    Emmanuel Macron

Before expressing his concern, the French president began his address with a joke: “It’s a time of peace, stability and predictability.”

Warning major powers against the temptation of modern colonial adventures, he added: “It’s a shift towards a world without rules. Where international law is trampled underfoot and where the only law that seems to matter is that of the strongest, and imperial ambitions are resurfacing.” Then he took aim at the Trump administration, denouncing “competition from the United States of America, through trade agreements that undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions, and openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe, combined with an endless accumulation of new tariffs that are fundamentally unacceptable, even more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty.”

    Mark Carney

“Great powers can afford for now to go it alone. They have the market size, the military capacity, and the leverage to dictate terms. Middle powers do not,” the Canadian prime minister said.

“In a world of great power rivalry, the countries in between have a choice: compete with each other for favor or to combine to create a third path with impact,” he said. “(We) argue the middle powers must act together because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

Carney strongly opposed U.S. aspirations to expand its Arctic territory. “We stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future.”

    Scott Bessent

With President Trump not due to address the elite global gathering until Wednesday, it fell to his treasury secretary to take up his defense in Switzerland.

“I think our relations have never been closer,” Scott Bessent said, playing down the rift among Western countries over Greenland. ”Calm down the hysteria. Take a deep breath.”

He added: “We are in the middle of President Trump’s policies. And of course, Europe is an ally, the U.S.-NATO membership is unquestioned. We are partners in trying to stop this tragic war between Russia and Ukraine, but that does not mean that we cannot have disagreements on the future of Greenland.”

    Bart De Wever

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said that with Trump’s Greenland provocations, “so many red lines have been crossed” in Europe.

President Trump and his entourage will be in Europe this week. And they are showing their contempt.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, already hobnobbing with elites at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, had a sharp retort when reporters asked him about European leaders’ efforts to block Mr. Trump from seizing Greenland.

“I imagine they will form the dreaded European working group,” Mr. Bessent said, calling it their “most forceful weapon.”

It is no secret that the president and his aides view Europe as a weak, ineffectual collection of nations dominated by liberal leaders and tangled in bureaucracy. His administration’s official national security strategy, released last month, said Europe had lost its “civilizational self-confidence” amid a “failed focus on regulatory suffocation.”

But rarely has the mocking been so overt.

European leaders’ “most forceful weapon” is “the dreaded European working group,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Credit…Markus Schreiber / Associated Press

Early on Tuesday morning, as Europe’s leaders continued to wring their hands over the president’s latest threats to Greenland, Mr. Trump posted an apparently A.I.-generated meme that showed him hoisting an American flag while standing on the island.

Editor’s Note: The cartoonish image of standing on Greenland, from Truth Social, my edits, I cleaned it up a bit. 🙂 … –DrWeb

“Greenland. U.S. Territory. Est. 2026,” the meme read.

Mr. Trump had not even arrived in Switzerland yet. But as he prepared to speak there on Wednesday, he continued to heap dismissive scorn on the leaders he was about to greet.

When reporters told Mr. Trump that President Emmanuel Macron of France was not going to join the American-led “Board of Peace” overseeing Gaza, Mr. Trump waved aside Mr. Macron’s opinions as irrelevant, saying he would be “out of office in a few months.”

“I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and Champagnes, and he’ll join, but he doesn’t have to join,” the president said, flexing the power of the American market and underscoring France’s vulnerability to his whims.

He also posted flattering messages from Mr. Macron and Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, on Truth Social — showing just how much European leaders are heaping praise on Mr. Trump in what appears to be an attempt to keep him engaged.

“I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work,” Mr. Rutte wrote in the message that Mr. Trump shared.

“Let us try to build great things,” Mr. Macron said, though he also noted: “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.”

Mr. Trump also targeted Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain, giving him his signature all-caps treatment as he complained that the United Kingdom had decided to give up sovereignty of Diego Garcia and the other Chagos Islands, while retaining control of a U.K.- and U.S.-operated military base there.

In 2024, the United Kingdom relinquished control of the islands, a remote archipelago it had held since the colonial era, to Mauritius. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later praised the deal, which came after years of negotiations, and after a court found that Britain had acted unlawfully by detaching the archipelago from Mauritius in 1965.

“Our ‘brilliant’ NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia,” the president wrote on his social media site, accusing Britain of doing so “FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.”

He added that international powers “only recognize STRENGTH” and that giving away the island was an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.”

Mr. Trump’s heckling has troubled European leaders, many of whom are hoping to communicate with him on the sidelines of the Davos meetings. Leaders from across the 27-nation European Union will also gather in Brussels on Thursday evening to discuss how to respond to his latest threats on Greenland.

As the United States looks like a more and more volatile ally — and a hugely unpredictable one — European leaders are saying the continent must move away from its tight ties to America.

    ➤ Making Argentina Great Again

it is incredibly suspicious to me that the US Treasury fund #Bessent wants to use to bail out #Argentina and Javier #Milei is almost exactly the same size as the amount of money #Tether is suddenly trying to raise via a “private placement”.

Tether is one of the most profitable companies in the history of the world, at least according to their own unaudited / unverified numbers. There should be no reason for them to need to raise capital and no desire on their part to sell off part of their cash cow.

Puting aside for a moment the absurdity of the idea that the central bank of international criminal finance considers itself to be in the same league as companies like Google, Nvidia, and Tesla, I can think of 3 possible explanations:

    1. Tether is (somehow) out of cash. This is lent some credence by the fact that they are failing to pay their electricity bill in #Uruguay and had their power turned off a few weeks ago.

    2. Tether wants to get some shares into the hands of corrupt government officials (other than Howard “Nutlick” #Lutnick, who already has some) for protection.

    3. Now that the #Fed has pivoted and cut rates Tether’s income is about to start dropping (and the more the fed cuts, the more it will drop) so they are just cashing out the founders at the top. This is the most charitable interpretation.

    it’s also worth mentioning that:

    1. Tether’s #USDT token is very popular with #Argentinians trying to avoid that country’s hyperinflation. While technically illegal because of capital controls, it’s still a “crime” I have some sympathy for. But it does mean there’s an important connection between Tether and Argentina.

    2. Tether is a major shareholder in south american agriculture business #Adecoagro which does a lot of work in Argentina.

the former Federal Reserve governor #Kevin #Warsh.

Trump is also considering the Wall Street billionaire #Marc #Rowan.

He had been expected to pick either #Howard #Lutnick, the chief executive of the Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald,
or #Scott #Bessent, the founder of the investment firm Key Square Capital Management and a former money manager for George Soros.

And he had been seen as likely to make the selection late last week.

He is expected to invite the contenders to interview with him this week at Mar-a-Lago.

  29. The two finalists to become Trump’s Treasury Secretary
    — the person will have a major hand in cutting taxes for the wealthy and raising tariffs so everyone pays more
    — are #Howard #Lutnick, who’s CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and Trump’s co-transition chair,

and #Steven #Bessent, the founder of the investment firm Key Square Capital Management.

Lutnick had been in the lead but a few days ago, according to the The Wall Street Journal, he heard from Trump’s allies that he might not get the nod.

So Lutnick turned for help to #Elon #Musk, who now calls himself Trump’s “First Buddy.”

Bessent’s supporters also reached out to Musk to endorse Bessent, which tells you alot about the palace intrigue going on now in Mar-a-Lago, and how much power Musk is now wielding.

Yesterday, Musk, posted on his X that Lutnick would be a better choice for treasury secretary than Bessent:
“My view fwiw is that Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas @howardlutnick will actually enact change. Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another.”

They just have to be bomb-throwers who’ll shake things up.

The worst that can be said of any candidate is he’ll govern as usual.

🔥Trump is well on his way to “crush the system,” as he promised
    — which most Americans appear to want because the “as usual” system has for decades been rewarding big-money donors, monopolists, CEOs living off government contracts (like Musk)
and fat-cat denizens of Wall Street (like Lutnick and Bessent)
    — all of whom have been siphoning off most economic gains for themselves.

🆘 But if the new system that Trump installs
    (with or without Musk’s help)
siphons off even more of the gains for those at the top, while destroying what’s left of our democracy,
most Americans will find themselves even worse off and more resentful.

  30. #David #Shulkin, whom Trump had appointed to head the V.A.,
made multiple visits to Palm Beach to consult with the troika that officials came to call “the Mar-a-Lago crowd.”

“There probably weren’t too many times I met with the President when he didn’t say,
    ‘What’s happening with Ike?’ ”
    Shulkin once said.

When Perlmutter visited Washington, Shulkin told me,
    “I would get a call
—‘Could you come over to the White House?
Mr. Perlmutter’s here with the President.’ ”

Shulkin was fired by Trump, in March of 2018, amid a controversy over an expensive trip to Europe that Shulkin had taken at taxpayers’ expense.

Within hours, he went public with accusations that the story had been hyped by Trump political appointees who were intent on privatizing many of the V.A.’s services.

Shulkin told me that he never fully understood why Perlmutter,
who had not served in the U.S. military or even visited a V.A. hospital until Shulkin took him to one,
had been given such power over the agency.

He described Perlmutter as “a private-sector guy” whom Trump admired as a self-made man,
someone who “had started with very little and built empires.”

The problem, as Shulkin saw it, was that Perlmutter had little idea of what he was doing.

“Because he never worked in government, he didn’t understand government,” Shulkin told me.

“Part of my role was always trying to translate
—‘That isn’t the way we could do things in this organization.’ ”

Perlmutter, however, has remained close to Trump.

He and his wife gave $21 million to a super pac supporting Trump’s bid in 2020,

and, in 2024, they bankrolled a new pro-Trump super pac,
    "Right for America",
    donating another $25 million.

By September, Right for America had raised some $70 million,
which it has spent on an advertising blitz this fall.

The venture drew support from other longtime members of Mar-a-Lago,
including the Newsmax founder #Christopher #Ruddy, who gave $100,000,
    and #Anthony #Lomangino, a South Florida waste-management mogul,
    who donated $7.85 million.

#Scott #Bessent, another hedge-fund executive often mentioned as a possible Trump Treasury Secretary,
    also contributed $100,000.

🆘 Perlmutter’s highly unusual role in the first Trump Administration appears to have become something of a template for outside influence in a second term.

In March, when #Elon #Musk met with Trump at Peltz’s house for breakfast,
they discussed a broad advisory gig for the tech billionaire on such matters as immigration and the economy
—“in the mold of the role” that Perlmutter had played at the V.A.,
according to the Wall Street Journal.

By August, after publicly endorsing Trump,
Musk had fleshed out the idea.

During a lengthy live-streamed conversation with Trump,
Musk suggested that a commission was needed to investigate how to rein in government spending.

Such a panel, Musk posted on X, “would unlock tremendous prosperity for America.”

    Weeks later,
during a speech at the Economic Club of New York,
Trump formally announced his support for a
    “government-efficiency commission”
    that would
“conduct a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government.”

    He proposed that Musk,
despite having received billions of dollars in government contracts and subsidies for his ventures SpaceX and Tesla,
    should chair the effort.

Soon, Trump was calling Musk his future
    “Secretary of Cost Cutting.”

It sounded like a more ambitious version of a project that Trump had launched early in his Presidency,
when he named the billionaire investor #Carl #Icahn as a special adviser in charge of overhauling federal regulations.

Icahn left the role less than a year later,
when an article in this magazine raised questions about potential conflicts of interest.
